He was astronomer-royal for Scotland professor of practical astronomy at the University of Edinburgh fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and of the Royal Societies of London and Edinburgh. He was heavily influenced by pyramid theorist John Taylor who theorized that the Great Pyramid was planned and the building supervised by the biblical Noah. Refused a grant by the Royal Society Smyth went on an expedition to Egypt in order to accurately measure every surface dimension and aspect of the Great Pyramid. He subsequently published his book "Our Inheritance in the Great Pyramid" 1864. He claimed that the measurements he obtained from the Great Pyramid of Giza indicated a unit of length the pyramid inch a God-given measure handed down through the centuries from the time of Israel. His conclusion was that the architects of the pyramid could only have been directed by the hand of God. Endpapers foxed some sporadic foxing inside else a nice copy in a very good condition. ~ FIRST EDITION. Extremely rare. Kristensen's original doctoral thesis "Egyptian Ideas about the Hereafter in Connection with the Gods Re and Osiris". Lithographed in its entirety from the manuscript. Willem Brede Kristensen 1867-1953. Dutch orientalist and anthropologist of Norwegian origin. He was professor for the History of Religion at the Leiden University1901-37 and made a special study of ancient religions and anthropology including Egyptian beliefs. He also studied Sanskrit Hebrew Avestian Phoenician and Egyptian. Kristensen's work and thought were very influential and he is considered by some as "the father of many scholars in the fields of Egyptology and comparative religion i.e. De Buck Van der Leeuw Bleeker and Zandee. His most well known work was "Life out of Death" published in Dutch as "Het leven uit den dood" 1926. His collected lectures were published as "The Meaning of Religion: Lectures in the Phenomenology of Religion" 1960. The corners of the pages are slightly bumped and there is a very tiny tear to the bottom edge of the plate. Very good.</p><p>RARE.</p><p>Theodore H. Lewis 1856-1930 was the first archaeologist to systematically survey and record archaeological sites in Minnesota. Between 1883 and 1895 Lewis surveyed more than 12000 mounds in Minnesota Canada and surrounding states.
