The first of Montgomery's books to be published by a Canadian publisher this is one of her most sought-after titles rarely found in a dust jacket even one as weary as this specimen oddly it is easier to find a signed copy than one with a jacket. Collects more than 90 poems by the author of 'Anne of Green Gables' most of which were published in almost two dozen Canadian and American magazines. Green cloth w/gilt cover/spine lettering 159 1 pages. Bumped corners light edgewear gilt almost entirely flaked from spine about a third flaked from front cover previous owner's name to front end paper dust/lightly tanned edges. Signed on the title page in blue ink by the film’s star Henry Silva using his name as well as that of his character Johnny Cool. Accompanying is the screenplay creation archive belonging to the film’s producer Milton Ebbins consisting of 335 pages of drafts and rewrites used in creating the screenplay consisting of original ribbon typescript carbon typescript and typed pasteups. With extensive pencil rewrites corrections and commentary about the direction of the screenplay on many of the pages. Very good condition. Considered one of the classics of neo Film Noir the film was directed by William Asher and starred Henry Silva in the title role Elizabeth Montgomery Richard Anderson Jim Backus Joey Bishop Sammy Davis Jr. and Telly Savalas. The film tells the story of the lives and loves of Italian and American gangsters. A very strange and usual crime film that is even more remarkable in that director William Asher is best remembered for previously directing the largest number of episodes 107 of the great comedy classic - I Love Lucy. Filming Johnny Cool was a 180 degree turn for the director. An amazing archive showing in detail the details and lengths that were taken to craft the screenplay and such a collection is rarely found dealing with a significant film. Octavo original half navy morocco uncut original cardboard slipcase. $1850.Signed limited first edition of this collection of 27 poems written by members of the Eighth Army while in the Western Desert in 1942-43 number 53 of only 110 copies signed by General Bernard Montgomery who has written the Foreword with etched frontispiece by Stephen Gooden.Twenty-six of the poems gathered here were the winning entries taken from 403 poems submitted to a competition organized by the Eighth Army's newspaper Crusader; poems had to be written in the Western Desert to be considered. The twenty-seventh poem ""has a unique history. Written on a scrap of paper it fluttered into the hands of a soldier sheltering in a slit trench during the battle of El Ahgeila."" As the renowned commander of the Eighth Army Montgomery of Alamein writes in his foreword ""It is not too fanciful to see in the poems that follow something of the greatness of mind and spirit with which this valiant Army has been fired and to which so many of its finest achievements can be attributed."" Printed text recto and verso in English and German in columns throughout large monochrome woodcut illustration by Cecil Salkeld to each issue. The rare short-lived and suppressed Irish literary periodical 'TO-MORROW' with the first appearance of Yeats' 'Leda and the Swan'.Edited by Cecil Salkeld and Henry Stuart 'TO-MORROW' despite its optimistic and future-looking title and the solicitation for content and subscription announcements saw only two issues in 1924 for August and September. The editors had however secured contributions a poem 'TO-MORROW' saw the first publication of 'Leda and the Swan' and an anonymous editorial from Nobel Laureate W. B. Yeats Liam O'Flaherty and Lennox Robinson as well as many others see below and aimed to publish a forum for new Irish poetry and prose that was inclusive and expansive. Unfortunately 'TO-MORROW' was also controversial and was suppressed despite the support of Yeats and others; not only did 'TO-MORROW' fail to invigorate Irish art and bring about a free Irish Renaissance it helped usher in a climate of further repression supression and censorship.The first issue included prose works such as O'Flaherty's 'A Red Petticoat' Robinson's 'The Madonna of Slieve Dun' Salkeld's 'The Principles of Painting' Margaret Barrington's 'Colour' and L. K. Emery's manifesto-like 'A Primitive'. Yeats' 'Leda and the Swan' led the poetry section that also included work by Charlotte Arthur F. R. Higgins Joseph Campbell and R. N. D. Wilson. A sonnet in German by O. F. Fleck was also published.The second issue was in similar format a mixture of prose and poetry opening with Arthur Symons' appreciation of Honoré Daumier featuring the conclusion of Salkeld's 'The Principles of Painting' as well as 'The Poplar Road' by Iseult Stuart H. Stuart's 'In the Hour Before Dawn' 'The Garden' by Sachka and 'The Tendencies of the Younger Irish Poetry' by L. K. Emery. Poetry included further contributions from Charlotte Arthur R. N. D. Wilson and F. R. Higgins as well as a poem by Blanaid Salkeld. O. F. FLeck contributed another poem 'An P'. Each issue included a large woodcut by Cecil Salkeld.'In August 1924 a small literary magazine To-Morrow went on sale in Dublin. As its title implies the magazine's editors Francis Stuart and Cecil Salkeld were buoyed with optimism. They hoped for a new cultural movement in the arts that would parallel its development and in turn influence the newly founded Irish Free State.' Bernard McKenna.'My dream is a wild paper of the young which will make enemies everywhere and suffer suppression I hope a number of times with the logical assertion with all fitting deductions of the immortality of the soul.'
