Cover has wear soiling and spine torn and reglued. Elias Colbert was a United States journalist historian and astronomer. The two authors were associated with The Chicago Tribune at time of publication. From a contemporary review: This work is just issued from the press. It has numerous illustrations-the latter including a first-class map of the city which not only shows the burnt district but also the parks and boulevards. The work comprises a well-written history of Chicago before the fire with full statistics of growth in the commercial development of the city. and her manufacturing progress; a full description of the city as it existed before the fire; a graphic and ample account of the fire with its attendant and succeeding incidents; a very carefully-prepared statement of losses; with an appendix giving sketches of the great fires in history the documentary history of the fire contemporary opinions concerning the event the relief work etc. The well-known ability of the authors had led the public to expect from their hands a standard work on the subject and the readers of the book will not be disappointed. Two spots dot the lakefront on this one hundred and fifty year old map. See the pic please. This map comes from a hot-off-the-press book chronicling the destruction and quick response to the Chicago Fire. The book has many illustrations with the most prominent being this map by Elias Colbert and Everett Chamberlin. The map is a very early visual presentation of the swath of the Chicago Fire.The tragedy was well reported to those who opted to buy this tome. Two page introduction to the book attached. C. F. Scarce classic study of the CHICAGO FIRE with numerous contemporary engravings from photographs taken on location. With the Scarce 4to foldout map of Chicago showing burnt area slight 2" tear along one fold. Covers corners & upper cap rubbed with a 3" thin stain across the upper cover; all plates are present & have considerable browning; light foxing throughout as is typical. On October 8 1871 at around 9pm on a Sunday evening a fire began in a barn outside Chicago owned by Mrs. Katherine O'Leary. Driven by a strong wind out of the southwest the flames headed straight for the center of the city with branches of flame shooting in several directions. The fire spread quickly because of plank sidewalks high winds and the Chicago River itself igniting from the massive amounts of pollution in the greasy river. By 1:30am it reached the Courthouse tower; the watchman barely escaped by sliding down the banisters through the burning stairway. Original blind stamped cover.
