It was seized to be Commodore of the Confederate Navy's headquarters and subsequently burned down in 1865. He rebuilt it as the Lafayette Saloon and it was expanded by his grandson in the earlier 20th century as The Hotel Rueger. "the Beatty" hosted many famous vistors and on May 20 1932 the Admiral Beatty Hotel's dining room was visited by Amelia Earhart who went there for breakfast.She stayed at the hotel the previous night after flying to Millidgeville N.B. that day. At the dining room she met a Saint John Telegraph-Journal reporter who gave her a copy of the newspaper published that day which featured her. Earhart then flew to Ireland taking the newspaper with her making the copy according to the Telegraph-Journal "the first North American newspaper to arrive in Europe on its day of publication". Built in 1910 under the direction of two of the greatest architects of the day Hotel Lutetia was the first Art Deco hotel in Paris. The facade which set the tone and reflected the prestigious standing of the property was entrusted to the sculptors Leon Binet and later Paul Belmondo father of actor Jean-Paul Belmondo. Situated in the literary and artistic centre of Paris several painters and writers have stayed or made their home at the hotel including Matisse Andre Gide Antoine de Saint-Exupry and Picasso.
