1872021074London: John Murray 1872. First edition but a very poor copy. LACKING - about a third of the first folding plate. LACKING - the advertisements at the end. DAMAGE - to the original front endpaper which has lost its corner and had a repair see illustration. DAMAGE - adhesion damage to the upper corner of the title page and rather stained see illustration. Internally - rather age-toned marked and stained. The photographic plates are very chipped and frayed. Plate 1 is lacking a piece as mentioned earlier; Plate 2 has one fold detached but still present. Binding - completely new strong green cloth a black cloth label on the spine "Darwins' Emotions" and blue/green endpapers. Almost certainly the second issue - Freeman 1142. The plates have Arabic numbers with signature 'b' on page v; and there is the misprint 'htat' on first line of page 208. Very Strange - there are two pages v/vi ! They appear to be identical. Thick square 12mo pp xvi 464 very well illustrated with many small woodcuts within the text an engraved frontispiece and an extra engraved itile page clean internally original grey/brown cloth decorated in gilt slightly worn and scuffed the spine a little frayed at head and tail. Unusual for the blue endpapers printed in gilt. Not dated but Freeman gives 1842. RARE. Draper 1775 - 1843 was born into a Church of England family that was too poor to send him for training as an ordinand. He worked as a printers apprentice at the Clarendon Press Oxford. He became a Baptist and when his apprenticeship was ended he went to study at the Baptist Academy Bristol under John Ryland. Ordained in 1804 he became pastor of a Baptist Church at Chipping Norton and then at Southampton. Draper was a much-published writer generally on Biblical topics. Cloth. Good. With 15 text illustrations small octavo pages viii 135 iv a contemporary signature on the front endpaper - Thomas Sheppard very clean internally. Pictorial printed boards the corners worn a little slightly rubbed; red cloth spine very slightly worn. 16 pages of the main text are devoted to detailed descriptions of recommended cultivars. Farini then lists cultivar descriptions extracted from the catalogues of specialists such as John Laing & Sons H.J. Jones Sutton's John R. Box and Clibrans. The date of 1896 is confirmed in the Royal Horticultural Society Lindley Library Catalogue. RARE. Farini Guillermo Antonio 1838-1928 = William Leonard Hunt also known by the stage name The Great Farini was a well-known nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Canadian funambulist entertainment promoter and inventor as well as the first known white man to cross the Kalahari Desert on foot and survive. He also published under the name Guillermo Antonio Farini. He performed many feats on high wires above the Niagara Falls but had to be rescued when attemting to do it on stilts! His life story reads like a Boys Own adventure novel ! Horticulture appears to have come late when he retired to Forest Hill London in 1890. He obviously bred his own Begonias as many bear his name. After 1899 he and his second wife the first had fallen from his shoulders from a high-wire! moved to Germany USA and finally settled in Canada.
