1880021680Wellington: The Office of James Hughes Colonial Museum & Geological Survey Department 1880. Illustrated with 64 slightly tinted plates four or five are a little foxed octavo pp xvi 175 the title page slightly foxed otherwise very clean internaly recently bound in a maroon cloth. The preface points out that one of the conditions to publication was that the plates should be nature-printed. This made it necessary to first publish a folio edition with a slightly different title which was indeed nature-printed. This was produced in a very small number. This octavo edition was then prepared for general distribution with the plates prepared by photo-lithography and depict the grasses one-half their natural size. SCARCE. The author trained at Kew between 180 1 and 1810; he then became Superintendant of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh a post he held till his death in 1848. He was responsible for a huge change in the Garden's accessions and oversaw the move to the present site at Inverleith Walk; a transition for which he designed a crude yet effective tree transplanter for moving many mature specimens.
