Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece 28 engraved plates octavo pp 14 two-page publisher's catalogue at the rear age-toning and some signs of use internally though this is usually restricted to the margins with the contemporary signature of V. Owen Smythe of Condover Park and loosely inserted is the later armorial bookplate of Reginald Cholmondeley of Condover Hall also loosely inserted is a further publishers' catalogue of 16 pages uncut and partially unopened the first page of which is detached; finely bound in full red crushed morocco with ornate gilt decoration on both covers the spine gilt with raised bands and a small black morocco label contained in a custom-made box of marbled paper over boards a red calf spine and cloth lined; the binder is not known but the inked initials "T.A.B. 1974" on the rear endpaper may identify them. From the library of the gardening historian Anthony Huxley with his stamp on the front endpaper. RARE. First published in 1767 the Sir John Soane Library suggests this is probably the third edition of this pattern book although the second could also be possible. An outstanding copy - unpressed and in its original state - of a very scarce book. As this was a book designed solely for almost daily use by working gardeners a copy in this condition is a remarkable survival. Blanche Henrey 1489. Illustrated with one plate foxed octavo pp xxxii 298 2 136 slight age-toning and blemishes heavier spotting and foxing between pages 77 and 98 possibly caused by the different paper of the plate otherwise very sound and tight contemporary half calf and marbled boards rubbed and slightly worn rebacked at some point with the old spine laid down the spine now slightly worn at head and foot. With armorial bookplate of Peter Clutterbuck and a slightly odd offset on the facing blank. RARE. Weston was originally a thread-hosier of Leicester but in some of his anonymous works describes himself as "a country gentleman". In 1773 he was living at Kensington Gore but later was living at Leicester where he was secretary of the local agricultural society. From the number of his published works it is evident he had a very wide knowledge of plants and plant literature. Blanche Henrey 1490 - "Richard Weston 1733-1806 appears to have had an excellent knowledge of nursery gardening and nurserymen's sale catalogues. He was interested in agriculture and all forms of horticulture and he also made a study of horticultural and botanical literature.Weston's first important published work appeared in 1769 anonymously. This was his Tracts on practical agriculture and gardening. At the end of this volume and in subsequent editions of the work is a very useful 'Catalogue of English authors.on husbandry gardening botany and subjects relative thereto''. This version map would be the one that would be reprinted for over a century in textbooks dictionaries and encyclopedias. Both volumes contain various works by Cassini and de Le HIre. Small octavo illustrated with one folding engraved plate a little foxed around the margins and with a corner creased pp 96 some foxing but otherwise firm throughout the verso of the title pages has an early stamp of an Austrian library also with the perforated stamp of the John Crerar library and its tiny withdrawn stamp an early signature on the title page with the attractive bookpate of the Crerar Library on the front endpaper the free front endpaper nearly detached. red quarter morocco and marbled boards rubbed . Anton von Storck 1731 - 1803 was an Austrian physician. Storck is remembered for his clinical research of various herbs and their associated toxicity and medicinal properties. His studies are considered to be the pioneering work of experimental pharmacology and his method can be regarded as forming a blueprint for the clinical trials of modern medicine. He was convinced that plants regarded as poisonous still had medicinal applications if employed in carefully controlled quantities. Störck was particularly interested in the medical possibilities of plants such as hemlock henbane jimsonweed and autumn crocus. His experiments with these plants involved a three-step process; initially used on animals followed by a personal trial and finally given to his patients all the while maintaining a "sliding-scale" approach to determine the optimum dosage. Störck's numerous Latin medical tracts detailing his experiments into the therapeutic effects of poisonous plants excited great interest and were translated into German French English Dutch and Portuguese rapidly becoming influential medical texts throughout Europe. A highly important work in the history of grass taxonomy and with an impeccable provenance - from the library of C.E. A highly important work in the history of grass taxonomy and with an impeccable provenance - from the library of Allen Wedgewood with the Gallipoli bookplate and thence to C.E. Hubbard with his signature. RARE. Hubbard was the foremost grass taxonomist of the twentieth century. Wedwood was the son of M.L. Wedgewood with whom he collected until his death during the First World War at Gallipoli aged just 22. M.L. Wedgwood created a herbarium of British plants at Marlborough College MBH as a permanent memorial to her son. The second edition was edited by Albrecht von Haller who added the four appendices as well as descriptions of 70 new plants. Complete with errata’s and original blank leaves two of three finely engraved frontispieces chapter vignettes ornamental head and tail pieces and 82 folding plates. Full mottled calf rebacked the corners a bit worn. Interior is lightly toned with some browning on the preliminaries and last leaves. Generally this is an excellent set. First editions of these three volumes from a series published by the Academy of Sciences. It is a summary of the activities and inventions that have been made and contains the most important discoveries of the time. These periodicals which were at the forefront of scientific development during the Enlightenment contain works produced by an elite class of French scientist for the years 1722 1731 and 1740. Each volume provided an overview of advancements in math and science for each year and the writings therein shaped the world’s understanding of physics mathematics astronomy anatomy and other fields of science. They further provide invaluable historical data such as meteorological and astrological records for each year. <br /> <br /> The memoirs for 1722 include data recorded on both a lunar and solar eclipse as well as other astronomical observations by Jacques Cassini 1677-1756 best know for completing his fathers work on determining the meridian of Paris. The distinguished astronomer provided further research on lunar eclipses in the memoirs of 1731 where he is in great company alongside distinguished mathematicians Alexis-Claude Clairaut 1713-1765 Pierre Bouguer 1698-1758 known for his work in physics photometry and hydrography and the foremost proponent of the Newtonian movement in France Pierre de Maupertuis 1698-1759. Of special note in the 1731 memoirs is Maupertuis’s ballistic arithmetic which was used to try to better understand the movement of the earth and its gravity. Too an article by Clairaut on new formulas for finding the center of gravity. These articles contributed greatly to a better understanding of the earth’s shape and the mechanics of its rotation particularly Bouguer’s essay on the tendency of objects set in motion to move in a curvilinear fashion. The 1740 edition contains Cassini De Thury’s De la Maridienne de Paris. which was an important step in the process of mapping the shape of the earth. Cassini 1714-1784 representing the third generation of the distinguished family of astronomers was the first to question <br /> <br /> <br /> Picard’s measurements which had been used to map the Maridian of Paris. Clairaut’s essay on integral calculus in the same volume which established the existence of an integrating factor for linear differential equations was an important step in the history of mathematics and Mairan’s treatise on reflection and refraction of light and the human eye was essential to the advancement of optics. Blanche Henrey 1256 - 1259. A work of many years scholarship including the revisions which Thomas Martyn had undertaken for his Plantae Cantabrigienses but which he ultimately gifted to Relhan. The author received much help from the amateur botanist James Dickson which contributed immensely to the value of the book as a record of the mosses fungi and algae of the county. The Thirkleby Park library copy with book label on the front endpaper and Thomas Frankland's stamped signature on the verso of all the title pages. Sir Thomas Frankland was a notable botanist. Blanche Henrey 323. John Ray FRS 1627 - 1705 was a Christian English naturalist widely regarded as one of the earliest of the English parson-naturalists.His classification of plants in his earlier Historia Plantarum was an important step towards modern taxonomy. Ray rejected the system of dichotomous division by which species were classified according to a pre-conceived either/or type system and instead classified plants according to similarities and differences that emerged from observation. He was among the first to attempt a biological definition for the concept of species as "a group of morphologically similar organisms arising from a common ancestor". Another significant contribution to taxonomy was his division of plants into those with two seedling leaves dicotyledons or only one monocotyledons a division used in taxonomy today. "In the Synopsis apart from the Linnean nomenclature we have a modern hand-book. The survey of species is remarkably accurate at least in flowering plants. The country has been adequately explored. The names and brief descriptions make identification easy. The classification if not scientifically perfect follows a natural sequence and is as easy to use as the modern scheme. Blanche Henrey 1255 devoting a page of text and three illustrations to it - "long remained popular and quotations from it are to be found in many 17th and 18th century books on English gardening". This third English editiuon is the only one to include the extra plate. It was originally published in France in 1665.
