Coombs and a reference to p.270 where over two pages Conan Doyle discusses the grievances of ships' officers: 'My reading of late has been rather mixed but it includes a book 'The Nation's Key-Men' by William Coombs which really deserves some attention'. Coombs was a British sailor who served in both the Royal Navy and Merchant Navy he went on to become a trade unionist representing merchant seamen.
