196284021London: Routledge & Kegan Paul 1962. First U.K. Edition. Octavo. 22cm. Publisher's deep blue cloth titled in gilt to spine. Dustjacket. xi; 162pp. Light bumping and edgewear to extremities otherwise sharp and strong with a slight bow to the boards; internally clean; in a strong solid dustjacket with some unsightly spotting and staining and a little marginal fraying and wear. A very good copy.

Lethbridge's investigation into the history and traditions of modern witchcraft if such a thing exists benefits from an amount of contribution from actual contemporary witches which is certainly an improvement on the general 'research' of the 60's and 70's which was much more interested in the 'dancing naked in the moonlight' aspects of magic and less in the 'as above so below' theoreticals. This is what happens when rare bookdealers sell books to Jimmie Page.
Lethbridge makes a credible attempt at a historical outline and includes some folkloric sources that are generally overlooked in favor of the nearest pointy hat. Not terribly uncommon but sought after. Routledge & Kegan Paul unknown

DJ has edgewear to top of spine.; 288 pages; Cult activity played an extremely important role in ancient Greece--to the point historians believe that the placing of cult centers played a major part in establishing the whole concept of the city-state in archaic Greece. The essays in this collection critically examine the social and political importance of sanctuary placement extending the analysis back to Mycenean Greece and on to Greece under Roman occupation. Revealing the complexity of relations between religion and politics in ancient Greece these essays show how important tradition gender relations and cult identity were in creating and maintaining the religious mapping of the ancient Greek countryside. . 0198149476 . Topics included are nineteenth-century historiography and the interest in linguistics. The second section sheds new light on the culture of archaic Greece offering a coherent assessment of literary and visual representations.
