1971137953Beverly Hills CA: United Artists 1971. Vintage black-and-white studio still photographs from the 1971 "surrealist documentary" rock film. The still depicts composer/screenwriter Frank Zappa conducting and singing. <br/><br/>In 1970 Zappa completely re-formed the Mothers of Invention to include drummer Aynsley Dunber jazz keyboardist George Duke and three members of The Turtles. Zappa began to write a film for the new lineup and recorded "Chunga's Revenge" 1970 with them as a "preview." Subsequently Zappa met conductor Zubin Mehta and worked with him to produce a concert in May 1970 wherein the Los Angeles Philharmonic was augmented by the Mothers or vice versa as you like and referred to this as "the second preview." <br/><br/>The film itself shot in a week at Pinewood Studios outside London was a tripped-out documentary about life as a musician on the road and Zappa characteristically chose an eclectic group of celebrities to join the proceedings including Theodore Bikel Ringo Starr and Keith Moon. The resulting soundtrack is a matter of debate among Zappa enthusiasts but is notable for its orchestral finale "Strictly Genteel" a touchstone for the variety of classical music experimentations Zappa would subsequently pursue. <br/><br/>8 x 10 inches. Binding a little darkened worn and creased in the upper corner; a good sound copy. 8vo original tan cloth spine pale green paper boards Chinese characters and western lettering in red. Frontis portrait. 24 poems and two short plays by Moon Kwan a native of China who attended USC in Los Angeles and UC Berkeley. Along the way he befriended Witter Bynner to whom one of the poems is addressed and George Sterling who wrote the introduction to the plays among other members of the literati and he worked as a technical advisor to D. W. Griffith on his film Broken Blossoms or The Yellow Man and the Girl. Kwan returned to Hong Kong in the 1930s where he worked in the film industry. This Los Angeles edition is one of two that appeared in 1932 or slightly later; the other with six additional poems was published in Hong Kong and is not dated. <br/><br/> Los Angeles: The Phoenix Press, 1932 unknown books

In the early nineteenth century the prevailing influence in children's books was the promotion of morality coupled with instruction and fairy-tales and such-like improper subjects were widely discouraged. So Benjamin Tabart showed no little courage when within three years of opening his Juvenile Library in Bond Street he launched out into the publication of a series of well-produced fairy-tales and nursery stories.<BR><br /> <BR><br /> During his short publishing career he continued to provide children's bookshelves with light-hearted attractive-looking books for which he employed excellent artists and some of the best children's writers of the day. Many of his publications are now very scarce but Marjorie Moon has recorded about a hundred and ninety titles often in several editions which have survived the hazards of nursery life. Since Mr. Tabert was not only a publisher but also a bookseller part two of this bibliography includes other titles which he advertized as being on sale in his shop.<BR><br /> <BR><br /> An introduction discussing Tabart's publishing career his family life and the very close connection between Tabart and the prolific publisher Sir Richard Phillips is included. Brian Alderson has contributed an appendix on the illustrating of two of Tabart's picture-books and another appendix reprints William Goodwin's remarkable preface to his book of Bible stories which so horrified Mrs. Trimmer the self-appointed critic of Georgian children's reading matter. He was brought up at Jefferson Barracks Missouri south of St. Louis. Smith received his A.B. and M.A. from Washington University in St. Louis and continued his studies at Columbia University and Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. Smith is the author of ten collections of poetry of which two were finalists for the National Book Award.
