Isolated tiny rust spots or faint foxing but A SPLENDID SET with no signs of use the text clean fresh and bright the bindings lustrous and unworn.<br/> <br/> This is an exceptionally fine rarely seen complete collection of Pickering's famed miniature Diamond Classics series elegantly bound in red morocco by Capé. William Pickering began his career as a bookseller before turning to publishing in the late 1810s. In 1820 he issued the first in the popular series of "Diamond Classics" miniature books set in tiny 4-1/2 point "diamond" types. Bondy who set aside his arbitrary three-inch limit on size in order to include these books says "Due to the great editorial care and the superb printing and binding which went into their manufacture combined with the importance of their contents these little volumes are now very eagerly collected by minibibliophiles and even more generally by lovers of finely produced books." A number of collectors had their volumes rebound by leading artisans like Charles-François Capé 1806-67 one of the most distinguished binders in France in the middle years of the 19th century and especially well known for the delicacy of his work. He was the binder to the Empress Eugénie and Béraldi calls him "the Bozérian of the second Empire." The present set includes the Pickering Catullus 1824 Cicero 1821 Dante two volumes 1822 Homer's "Iliad" and "Odyssey" two volumes 1831 Horace second printing 1826 Petrarch 1822 Tasso two volumes 1822 Terence 1822 and Virgil 1821. Spielmann singles out the Homer for special praise noting that with its "clear easily legible type" printed by Charles Whittingham it is "one of the best-printed Greek miniature books ever produced." And the Virgil is especially rare: Spielmann and Sheringham aver that all but 100 copies were destroyed by a fire at the offices of printer C. Corrall. The condition here is simply outstanding. Each volume has a specific subject such as: Geography the Bible birds stories from the Middle East mythology botany etc. A French edition exists as well but there the volume on Dutch history is replaced with French history. The present set is rare on the market and only available in a few libraries.</p><p>The work was reviewed in 'Vaderlandsche letteroefeningen 1824' page 45: "Een allergelukkigste inval waarvoor menig lezer in miniatuur den vinder danken zal. 1840673Philadelphia Pa. 1840. Calling Card printed one side only. 40 x 75 mm. 1 ½ x 3 inches. Painter's name scratched out and "Miss Louise Bradley West Springfield" is penciled in Engraved border pinholes. James W. Williams was a miniature portrait painter. He also experimented with early photographic processes to produce his portraits. He was born in England about 1787 and set up shop in Philadelphia. The Smithsonian holds two of his works; a Talbotype paper print with applied color of Edward Robinson Squibb and an ivory type of two girls untitled. Ivory types were positive photographic prints resembling a hand-painted ivory miniature and were first produced in the mid-1850s. As the term suggests some of these images were made on thin sheets of actual ivory or artificial ivory made of pigmented and hardened gelatin. Louise Bradley 1818-aft 1880 of West Springfield Massachusetts acquired Williams's calling card and used it as her own in this instance since she crossed out his name and penciled in her own. She married a farmer Charles White and lived and died in West Springfield. Portrait miniatures began to flourish in 16th century Europe and the art was practiced during the 17th century and 18th century but the development of photography contributed to the decline in the popularity of miniatures. . unknown

Given the restricted area available for a "canvas" our artist has done a remarkable job both in the level of detail and the sense of space and grandeur the scenes evoke so it is not surprising that this volume was in the Irene Winterstein Collection of Important Miniature Books Christie's sale of 10 March 2000 lot 277 fetching $1455 all in. This is a rare miniature edition: Welsh records only one copy in her bibliography. Our copy belonged to Irish bibliophile and philanthropist William Dunville 1812-1874 who was also a whiskey magnate and magistrate. After its first founder John Dunville died William Dunville his only surviving son became the next chairman of Dunville & Co Belfast who are still famous for their whiskey today. Complete set of the first edition of a charming miniature library preserved in the original box. This educational set for children contains works on geography Dutch history classical mythology natural history and the Bible with all the plates and maps included. A French edition was published in the same year but replaced the volume on Dutch history with a work on French history. Due to the charm of this miniature library a facsimile edition was published in 1984. The present set however is the first edition which is rare on the market and only available in a few libraries.Many miniature books were primarily written for children. As was usually the case with children's books published before the 20th century miniature books were typically instructional or educational in nature. Although they have existed since at least the early 17th century they were only specifically marketed towards children from the mid-18th century onwards. Children's books from the end of the 18th century were often influenced by the theories of Jean Jacques Rousseau 1712-1778 who thought that children should learn through play and at their own pace. According to Welsh the present works show Rousseau's ideas because they present the information through short stories.The edges and corners of the box are somewhat scuffed and the gold trimming on the lid has come loose in some spots with some loss of material. The paper wrappers of some of the volumes show some signs of wear. A few pages loose in ads 5 8 and 9 but they are still included. Typically intended for women they were usually beautifully bound and contained poetry and love songs. The present example contains several illustrated poems Le Gondolier Vive la Gaité A Bacchus L'ours et le renard Minuit L'hiver followed by a calendar. The almanac only had a short run as it was only published for the years 1843-1845.The bookblock is partly detached from the binding. The present example which has curiously been bound upside down contains several illustrated love songs some of which are allegorical and a calendar. The illustrations depict men and women engaged in a variety of different activities dressed in the fashion of the time. Several issues of the almanac were published in the same year with a different number of illustrations and some with the publisher's name on the title page.The boards and spine have been somewhat rubbed. With a steel-engraved armorial title page a four-page steel-engraved view of the mansions of the Earl of Spencer and of the Earl of Ellesmere in green park and a steel-engraved half-page armorial vignette. 24 pp. Ornately bound "pocket" London almanack; an entirely steel-engraved miniature publication for the year 1851. The almanack contains an explanation of its use including an overview of the dominical letter golden number epact and cycle of the sun for the year 1851 a 4 page view of the "mansions of the Earl Spencer and the Earl of Ellesmere in the green park" engraved by H. Adlard an overview of sun and moon eclipses in that year the calendar a "regal table" overview of British monarchs since 1066 an overview of the Royal family of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and their children lists of great officers of state of Great Britain and Ireland an overview of stamps bills and promissory notes and finally a list of "transfer days at the bank &c." including the South Sea House and India House.The London Almanack was published by the Company of Stationers from the end of the 17th century until the end of the 19th century. They are of special interest for their fine publisher's bindings but also for their striking views of London.With a manucript owner's inscription on the front blank endpaper recto of the engraved title page in pencil "A. S. Wossley" and pencil annotations between the printed lines of the calendar. The slipcase shows minor signs of wear the binding is slightly damaged at the head and foot of the spine not affecting the integrity of the binding. Original embossed brown cloth covers. 203 pages. 18 engravings including frontispiece depicting "Adam and Eve in the Garden" "The Prodigal Son" "Samson Killing A Lion" "Christ's Agony in the Garden" "Moses in the Bullrushes" "John the Baptist" and more. Miniature 'thumb bibles' such as this one were abridged versions of the Bible intended for children and decorated with pictures. <br /> <br /> At the time that this description is being written just four copies are recorded in American institutions. OCLC search results are at best an estimate and can vary over time. Pencil ownership inscription on front pastedown reading "Sallie Hitch's Book Presented By Her Father". Sallie practices her name on the rear endpaper and leaves a small pencil doodle. Textblock tight though front hinge has separated from the textblock. Covers whole. Faint titles to spine. Pages occasionally creased and slightly toned but overall clean and attractive. An interesting beautifully illustrated volume in good condition. unknown

Miniature Bible 16mo 3.5" x 2" tan calf with embossed backstrip & four hubs newer endpapers all edges gilded complete in ~ 422 6 blank pages. Charming yet sturdy very small Bible dating from the War of 1812. The binding is attractively embossed leather with of course some rubbing. Small binder's ink stamp stating "Armstrong" on rear endpaper. The pages are of strong rag paper which is slightly age-toned occasionally bearing slight discolorations and often slightly dog-eared though that has been reversed in most cases. The type is clear and readable. Overall a wonderful and attractive example of a tiny early American edition of the Bible that used British sheets. George Eyre and Andrew Strahan unknown

Miniature 2.6" x 4.5" rebound in full brown leather with gold stamping and labels 5 hubs engraved frontispiece of Dr Saml Johnson engraved title page 160 pages. Rare Miniature of the larger original published in 1759. Rasselas is Dr. Johnson's version of a morality tale about what constitutes True Happiness that rivals Voltaire's Candide. The volumes' working title was "The Choice of Life." The name "Rasselas" means "The Chief" of a tribe in exotic Abyssinia. The Great Cham & Lexicographer was pro-emancipation and had a black manservant whom he treated very well. This minor classic was supposedly written by the good Doctor to defray expenses expected with his mother's funeral. In fact there are signs of extensive revisions in early editions that suggest greater literary intentions. Rebound in fine brown morocco with gilt stamped title and author on the spine. Foxed engraved frontispiece and title page otherwise pages bright and legible with a tight binding tight. Lower margin of page 7 roughly torn away but not affecting the clear text.
