A wonderful original ballet director’s art direction notebook for the Peter Pan ballet staged in 1984 intended to offer young up-and-coming ballet students at the time to experience live performances and to unify Eastside/Westside Royal Academy of Dancing trained students. It would be 5 years before the Oregon Ballet and Pacific Ballet Theater would consolidate under the direction of James Canfield to form the Oregon Ballet Theatre. This ballet featured four acts divided into The Nursery Neverland Ship of the Pirates and Conclusion featuring solos by Wendy Tinker Bell Peter and Captain Hook over the length of the production. Dancers 4-5 years old were featured as the Neverland Fairies 5-7 years old with 2 years of training and pre-primary Royal Academy examinations behind them played Forest Fairies; Lost Children were 6-9 years old and had performed Barre and footwork; followed by the Pirates and soloists including Wendy Heather Miller Peter Pan Laura Spradlin Captain Hook Elizabeth Johnson and the mermaids drawn from the Lake Oswego School of Ballet under the directorship of Christine Donald. The original score by Anita Perry b. 1960 an up-and-coming Canadian composer out of British Columbia where she had studied piano with Lee Kum Sing and composition with Cortland Hultberg. In her early 20’s M. Perry had already won several composition awards was known for her original ballet works and wrote this score with orchestration for a variety of instruments “lending to the performance. . . a more closely approximated real environment experienced by professional dancers.†Peter Pan as a ballet required a fair amount of athleticism and as indicated here in Higgins’s artistic director’s notebook required extensive choreography changes scene adjustments and revisions by M. Perry. Higgins studied and danced at the British Royal Ballet later with Elvie DeMarko 1924-1989 of Ballet Russe and then with Robert Barnett of the Atlanta Ballet. No similar notebooks or programs survive for this 1984 ballet and there are no recordings or printed musical scores this cataloguer could uncover. 1957208291957. Press photograph archive of African American women opera singers 1957-1977 documents the emergence and international recognition of Black performers within mid twentieth century classical music and operatic institutions. The images center on four prominent singers whose careers developed during and after the era of segregation when access to major stages and audiences expanded unevenly for Black artists. Figures such as Marian Anderson who broke barriers at the Metropolitan Opera in 1955 established a precedent for subsequent generations; the performers represented here advanced that presence through sustained international careers providing visual evidence of African American participation in elite cultural institutions during a period of social and cultural change.

Six black and white silver gelatin press photographs each approximately 8 x 10 inches with captions and markings on recto and verso. Subjects include Adele Addison in two studio portraits from the 1950s later known as the singing voice for Bess in Porgy and Bess 1959; Shirley Verrett in two images including an early news photograph prior to a performance at Ambassador College Auditorium and a later 1976 stage portrait in formal concert dress; Martina Arroyo in a 1977 portrait during the height of her international career; and Grace Bumbry depicted in costume as Princess Eboli in Verdi's Don Carlos at the Metropolitan Opera in 1965. The photographs capture both staged publicity portraits and performance contexts documenting professional presentation and artistic identity.

Produced during decades of expanding civil rights advocacy and gradual institutional integration the archive situates African American women within a field historically shaped by exclusion and limited access. Their visibility in major opera houses and concert venues reflects broader shifts in cultural recognition and professional opportunity while also underscoring the continued significance of performance as a site of racial and gendered representation. Minor edge wear; captions remain legible; overall very good condition. unknown

Smith at Underwood & Underwood Inc. News Picture Division to Miss Marion Talley. These photographs and giant lobby poster provide splendid artifacts for the lavish attention paid to a young star at the beginning of her career during the Jazz Age. The very large poster is a beautiful example of colour lithography showing her demurely seated against a pink lozenge background with advertisements at the foot of the poster for Steinway Piano and Victor Records. Marion Talley 1906-1983 was the daughter of a telegraph operator for the Missouri Pacific Railroad and by 15 she was appearing in the Kansas City Grand Opera Company of Mignon by Abroise Thomas and quickly became a local celebrity often performing benefit concerts. She studied with music teacher Frank LaForge famed soprano composer who maintained a close relationship with the Metropolitan Opera and was placed under contract in 1925 by Giulio Gatti-Casazza at age 19 becoming the youngest principal female performer in the Met’s history to that point. Her debut performance was Feb. 17 1926 as Gilda the daughter of the title character in Verdi’s Rigoletto. The press photos show her surrounded by the many flowers she received in the 18 encores her performance on stage meeting the opera diva Ernestine Schumann-Heinck d. 1936 as well as her appearance on radio with Marguerite D’Alvarez and Giovanni Martinelli singing Home! Sweet Home!. In addition she also starred in the first Vitaphone short sound films released in 1926 with Don Juan starring John Barrymore and another Vitaphone short performing “Bella figlia dell’amore†from Rigoletto but the critics were savage criticizing her performances and her lack of appeal on camera. During this period she traveled extensively to Europe and through the southwest as evidenced by the series of photos showing her in Taos with the burros young Native American children and adults in regalia as well as her automobile. The photo of the young star by Samuel Lumiere 1878-1971 is a very nice example of his portrait work during the height of the 1920s when he was under contract to shoot celebrities for the Chicago Tribune. 1921100261
Milano January 15 1921. 1921. Very good. - Over 60 words penned in Italian on 10-1/2 inch high by 8-1/4 inch wide cream "Via Verdi 4 Milano" stationery. Puccini writes to the publishers Fratelli Treves on behalf of his friend the writer Enrico Pea. He addresses Guido Treves the nephew of the firm's founder Emilio Treves who took over the company upon Emilio's death in 1916. Guido Treves ran the company with his wife Antonietta. Puccini writes that there is a manuscript awaiting publication at Treves' house. It is from his dear friend the Apuan region poet Enrico Pea. He asks that publication be expedited as there is a second volume ready for print. Puccini states that he wrote to Beltrami Giovanni Beltrami the managing director at Fratelli Treves who promised that it would be published soon. Signed "tuo yours G. Puccini" followed by his regards to Guido's wife. Folded horizontally and vertically for mailing the letter is slightly creased at the corners with a couple of minuscule chips to the edges. Once mounted there are remnants of archival tape along the top edge of the verso.

Giacomo Puccini often enjoyed a table at the Antico Caffe di Simo in Lucca with his friend Enrico Pea.

The book being discussed by Puccini is without doubt the first volume in Pea's "Trilogia del Moscardino" simply titled "Moscardino" published by Fratelli Treves in 1922. The book was translated into English by Ezra Pound. It was reviewed in the January 1 2005 edition of the New York Review of Books: "A small masterpiece Pea's lyrical autobiographical novel paints a fiery and intimate portrait of an old man through the brushstrokes of his grandson. The passions and tensions between the old eccentric and his brothers play themselves out in mythical sketches before a vivid backdrop of the hills of Lunigiana. Moscardino the first novella of his tetralogy Il romanzo di Moscardino is anarchic and haunting. Pound conducts Pea's vernacular song allowing images to flow from the land the flesh and beyond."

Little needs to be said about the life of the great Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini 1858-1924 who composed several of the best known Italian operas. The first being that of "Moscardino" and the second beginning with "Il Figlioccia" which takes on a softer delicate modulated style.
Milano, January 15, 1921.
1939ABE-1538494660313Royal Opera House Covent Garden 1939 EXTREMELY RARE! REX WHISTLER designed this glorious programme for the State Performance in Honour of The President of the French Republic and Madame Lebrun at the Royal Opera House March 22 1939. WHISTLER's cover design is an elaborate affair; the embossed card covers are ingeniously cut away in curves. It is fabulously decorated by Rex Whistler on the front and back. A gold cord with tassels forms the binding round the twelve folded pages. Dancers included Margot Fonteyn Robert Helpmann William Chappell Frank Staff and Frederick Ashton. Sir Thomas Beecham conducted the London Philharmonic Orchestra. This is a great collectable example of ephemera in its own right but it is of especial value for admirers of Rex Whistler. Soft cover.
