Purves 1897-1964 Was Born In Philadelphia And Graduated From The Germantown Friends School In 1914. His Career At The Univeristy Of Pennsylvania Which He Entered In 1914 Was Interrupted By World War I; But He Received Is B.S. In Architecture In 1920. After Graduation Purves Returned To France Where He Attended The Atelier Gromort From 1920 To 1921. Upon His Return To Philadelphia Purves Joined The Firm Of Zantzinger Borie & Medary Where He Remained Through 1927 Only Spending 1925 With Willing Sims & Talbutt. In 1927 Purves And Another University Of Pennsylvania Graduate Kenneth M. Day Set Up Their Own Firm Of Purves & Day. Edmund R. Purves Joined The Aia In 1930 And Became A Fellow In 1944. In 1932 Purves Began To Work Independently. In 1937 Purves Thomas Pym Cope And Harry Stewart Established Purves Cope & Stewart Which Endured Until 1941. Again A War Intervened And Purves Moved To Washington Dc Where He Served As The Aia's Representative. He Volunteered For War Action Again However And By 1942 Was With The U.S. Air Force In The Pacific Theatre. In 1945 He Returned To Washington Dc And Resumed Work With The Aia As Director Of Public And Professional Relations And In 1949 He Was Promoted To Executive Director For The Institute A Position In Which He Remained Until 1960. For The Last Four Years Of His Life Purves Acted As Consulting Architect For The Dc Firm Of Chatelain Gauger & Nolan Architects And Engineers. E. Weyhe hardcover

1976100846New York April 19 1976. 1976. Fine. - Over 60 words typed on 10-1/2 inch high by 7-1/4 inch wide "MET: Metropolitan Opera Association Lincoln Center" stationery. The executive director of the Metropolitan Opera Anthony Bliss replies to City Center's former producer and director Jean Dalrymple's suggestion that she could be helpful to City Center again in managing the four ballet companies associated with the MET "Regardless of what kind of arrangements we may make on behalf of the ballet companies we certainly will want to get the benefit of your ideas and experience." Signed "Tony". Folded for mailing else fine.Together with the retained copy of Jean Dalrymple's letter of April 6 1976.The executive director of the Metropolitan Opera Anthony A. Bliss 1913-1991 gave up his law practice in 1974 to take over what was then a financially troubled organization. He co-operated with music director & chief conductor James Levine and the director of production John Dexter in the early 1980's. Bliss was also co-chairman of the Joffrey Ballet. Though tall and distinctive looking his wife Sally described him as "the most unsophisticated man I ever met. I pick out his clothes." and elaborated by saying "He has no gourmet instincts: I could feed him a can of Alpo." With a sense of humor Bliss then started keeping a can of dog food on his desk. President Lyndon Johnson appointed Bliss to the original National Council on the Arts.The recipient Jean Dalrymple 1902-1998 was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville appearing with James Cagney and Carey Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski Mary Martin Jos Iturbi Andre Kostalanetz Nathan Milstein and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943 serving as a board member and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951 Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. She was a friend to Presidents and entertainment personalities throughout the world. 193636755J. Miles & Co. Ltd. 1936. 1936. Very good. - A 22 inch high by 15 inch wide promotional poster with a brief biography and press reviews of performances by the American Soprano Ina Souez. Printed in brown on cream paper with a 5-1/4 inch high by 4 inch wide portrait of the singer printed at top left above a brief biography with the banner title to the right of the image. Reviews of Ina Souez' performances are printed in 3 columns with several reviews quoted under each of several headings including "Glyndebourne Opera Festival 1936" "Glyndebourne 1935" "Copenhagen 1936" "International Season Royal Opera House Covent Garden" etc. A 5-1/2 inch high by 3-1/2 inch wide full-length portrait appears at bottom right. The poster is folded vertically and horizontally with a short tear to the top of the vertical fold. It is otherwise slightly soiled with minor creases. The word "DUPL>NYPL" is stamped several times on the verso. Very good. As per the brief biography printed under her portrait "Ina Souez the new star soprano was born in Windsor Colorado America. In 1928 on the advice of Gatti Casazza she went to Italy to study voice production with Signor Rodolfo Mele. She has appeared for several seasons at Covent Garden in principal roles and at the Glyndebourne Mozart Festival where she is permanently engaged. She has also appeared in Denmark Germany and Paris and has been declared by the leading critics of Europe as the greatest Mozart soprano living. Her Bellini and Verdi have been declared unsurpassable. In Puccini she also excels and in Ravel and Bizet is considered unequaled."Ina Souez 1903-1992 was born Ina Rains to a family of Cherokee heritage in Windsor Colorado. Upon embarking on her career she took her grandmother's last name "Souez". Ina Souez 1903-1992 first studied with the Canadian contralto Florence Hinman and made her debut as Mimi in Ivrea in 1928. At Florence Hinman's urging she went to Italy in 1931 to study with Sofia del Campo. She starred in roles in Milan and these were soon followed by appearances in London Paris and Rome. She first sang at Glyndebourne on the second night of the Festival's inauguration in 1934 and went on to become the festival's prima donna. She made her home in London and was the first to commercially record performances of "Don Giovanni" ad "Cosi fan Tutte". Returning to the US at the outbreak of WWII she enlisted in the Women's Army Corps and subsequently signed up with the Spike Jones band often playing the comedian as members of the band would remove pigeons from her hat while she sang.
