Burnside 1824-1881 a native of Indiana graduated from West Point in 1847 served in the west and was named colonel of a Rhode Island regiment at the outbreak of the Civil War rising quickly to brigade command; he eventually commanded a division a corps a wing and the Army of the Potomac meeting variously with success North Carolina coast Knoxville and disaster Fredericksburg the Crater. Following the war he served as Governor of Rhode Island 1866-1869 and as U.S. Senator from that state 1875-1881. This work was published as an extended eulogy on his death. Dornbusch II 1877. John Brown and Sons was a Hardware and Machinests' Supplies firm on Pratt Street in Baltimore and their letterhead makes up the bookplate. Possibly related directly to the Abolishonist thus a unique association piece. Certainly associated to the hardware store where the first man to die in the Civil Ware was removed to after he was shot but before he died and where he was given first aid by the store owner.
