Heavily illustrated by the artist Ben Talbert one of the most important artists in the Los Angeles circle that revolved around Wallace Berman and his publication Semina. Berman and his circle were at the forefront of avant-garde cultural and artistic experimentation on the West Coast in effect the western equivalent of Andy Warhol and his Factory workers with sensibilities representing the Beat and early counterculture movements.<br /> <br /> These notebooks are from Talbert's most important period and the most important period for his circle when he was directly influenced by and collaborating with Berman and most of the artworks presage Talbert's most cherished and representative themes - nudes intense sexuality S&M scenes and handwritten and illustrated plans for installations assemblages collages or sculpture. Several drawings and plans are initialed and dated although most are not as normal for sketchbooks.<br /> <br /> Related material laid in include several nude and mildly sexual photographs of Talbert and a woman named Gayle presumably his wife or girlfriend used by them as Christmas Greetings other clothed photographs of the couple a handmade Valentine from Gayle to Talbert several vintage color photographs of Talbert's framed work a couple of different invitations to memorial retrospectives of his works after his death in 1975 from a drug overdose at the age of 42 and several additional drawings by Talbert on a variety of different sizes of paper.<br /> <br /> The sketches ranging from fully detailed drawings to impressionistic nudes are executed in a variety of media: pencil pen and ink marker gouache colored pencil watercolor and a few in ball-point pen. There are 69 pages of reasonably fully executed drawings bound in plus an additional five laid in for a total of 74 pages of drawings. There are 21 pages of handwritten and illustrated plans for installations plus another two laid in for a total of 23 pages. There are about 14 pages of drawing exercises bound in where Talbert attempted to draw every conceivable object often more than a dozen objects to a page. There is one additional drawing mounted and used as a greeting card that we are reasonably certain is by Talbert as it is similar to his style and preferred subject matter a spurting penis but whose inscription: "Sam - Luv Tony" gives us pause.<br /> <br /> While the drawings are appealing and interesting the plans for Pop installations assemblages and sculptures are fascinating especially considering the time in which they were conceived. They include chastity-belts shaped and illustrated as police badges and many variations on altered televisions mostly with sexual twists and innuendos.<br /> <br /> Talbert's work was the subject of a retrospective exhibit at the Andrew Roth Gallery in New York in March of 2007. This is previously unrecorded material representing vital and important work for an overlooked but important artist in the most interesting period of his career. hardcover

This is the first edition of the Haggadah for Passover copied and illustrated by Ben Shahn published in a total edition of 292 copies each bearing the artist's signature and cipher on the frontispiece. This edition is one of 20 copies numbered XIII of XX and is printed on Arches Grand Velin pure rag paper. It includes an extra set of the color plates on Arches Vergé paper; a set of the plates left uncolored on Arches Vergé; and a proof state of the lithograph frontispiece all contained in separate folders. Text in Hebrew and English. All contained in a full vellum clamshell box with brass latches designed by Gerald Binney. A rare limited and gorgeous copy in perfect condition. The poster lampoons the Democratic and Republican candidates Dewey and Truman leaving the viewer to conclude that the two mainstream parties are indistinguishable partners in "the same old song and dance" leaving Wallace as the only viable candidate. The visual metaphor may have proved too subtle; only one of the Progressives' 114 candidates succeeded in winning a seat; Presidential candidate Wallace received only about 2% of the popular vote. 83909. There are almost a million people in the United States who live in hospitals. for the mentally deranged Screenplay for Hitchcock's psychological thriller starring Ingrid Bergman and Gregory Peck released in 1944 to significant acclaim. The present script presents a version of the text featuring many revised sheets from the time that the screenplay was submitted for approval to the Motion Picture Association of America. The film is based on the 1927 novel by John Palmer and Hilary A. Saunders under the pseudonym Francis Beeding entitled The House of Dr. Edwardes. The script notes "'Spellbound' The House of Dr Edwardes" on the first leaf. The first page of text has the novel's title struck through and replaced by the title of the film. Hitchcock and his wife began working on a treatment of the novel in December 1943. Hitchcock hired Angus MacPhail to help a month later and Ben Hecht then wrote the screenplay. The opening titles of the film credit the screenplay by Hecht with "adaptation by" MacPhail. Large folio 13 by 17 inches unsewn as issued original glassine wrappers original clasped parchment box. $6500.Beautiful large limited folio Passover Haggadah number 175 of only 228 copies out of a total edition of 292 on Arches Vergé paper illustrated by Ben Shahn with 21 color pictorial borders and line drawings and an additional beautiful double-page color lithograph also signed by him.Lithuanian-born graphic artist Ben Shahn executed many of the illustrations for this Haggadah around 1930 while working on a pictorial representation of the Dreyfus case and conceiving his celebrated series of paintings of the Sacco and Vanzetti trial. Like those for his secular works Shahn's Haggadah illustrations highlight the struggle against oppression a theme central to the story of Passover. In 1965 Shahn reproduced these Passover drawings which had already been acquired by the Jewish Museum incorporating them into this extraordinary Haggadah. Shahn's year-long visit to Djerba off the Tunisian coast and his masterful calligraphy lend this Haggadah an oriental feel. Text in Hebrew and English. Only very mild discoloration to original box. Carteret IV 140. ◆Spine lightly sunned one tiny spot on half title but A VERY FINE COPY clean fresh and bright internally and in a binding with no signs of wear.<br/> <br/> This is a strikingly bound deluxe copy of the first book produced by the French Orientalist painter Étienne Dinet and his Arabic teacher and closest friend Sliman ben Ibrahim. The text of three Saharan folktales related here by Sliman are illustrated with Dinet's sensuous watercolors and the whole is bound with great animation and skill by Otto Schulze of Edinburgh. Dinet and Sliman met in Algeria in 1889 when Sliman saved the painter from an ambush. Sliman accompanied Dinet to Paris in 1896 where he met the French Society of Oriental Painters and impressed them with both his character and his couscous. Sliman and Dinet also collaborated on a biography of Mohammed and an account of the Hajj they made after Dinet's conversion to Islam. The binding here is reminiscent of an Oriental carpet and echoes Dinet's beautiful designs used inside the book. Operating during the first 10 or 15 years of the 20th century Otto Schulze was an Edinburgh publisher whose books sometimes appeared in bindings said to have been done by him. As in the case of other publishers and booksellers such bindings often were done for rather than by the party whose name is stamp-signed on the volume. Bindings signed by Schulze are consistently attractive but are not common: since 1975 ABPC has listed six such morocco bindings two of them described as "elaborate" or "extra." Since our volume says that the binding is by--and not for--Schulze we can only assume that our publisher had an in-house binder. From 1906 until his death in 1935 our previous owner John R. Menzies was chairman of John Menzies & Co. founded in Edinburgh in 1833 by his father. The firm sold books magazines and newspapers becoming with W. H. Millholland about an egomaniacal theatrical producer based on real-life impresario David Belasco as he attempts to win back his former protégé now working as a Hollywood actress. The play made its Broadway premiere on December 29 1932 at the Broadhurst Theatre running for 152 performances. Adapted for film by Howard Hawks two years later starring John Barrymore and Carole Lombard. <br /> <br /> Set in New York. <br /> <br /> Blue titled wrappers with credits for playwrights Hecht MacArthur and Millholland on the front wrapper. Burman's manuscript for his 1945 novel about a Mississippi steamboat captain's journey on the Congo with a multitude of corrections and revisions throughout. Accompanying the manuscript is an Autograph Note Signed from Burman to his book editor delivering the finished work. Burman born in Covington Kentucky in 1896 published numerous novels set in the South with many centered on life along the Mississippi. His earlier novel Steamboat Round the Bend was the basis for the 1935 film of the same name starring Will Rogers. A world traveler and veteran of both World War I and World War II Burman was among the first correspondents to reach the Free French capital of Brazzaville in independent French Equatorial Africa during WWII an experience that greatly informed this story. The front and back covers lavishly impressed and tooled in gilt comprising an oval central medallion with red tracery designs within a solid gold background. With recessed cords on spine giving a deep design in relief with one elongated panel of Arabic design incorporating three red onlays and title in Arabic in center. Elaborate gilt dentelles with 5 fillet lines watered green silk panels and flyleaf. Single gilt rule along the edges of the boards. Top edges finely gilt. Signed on the front lower dentelle “Durvand Rel. Relieure or “binderâ€. The book is scarce and one of the finer illustrated books of this genre published in the 20th Century 173pp. No. 622 form an edition 0f 800. Printed with lavish color plates in full color 38 full-page colored plates with lettered tissue guards many illuminated with gold. The illustrations are by E. Dinet and decorations by de Mohammed Racim. Very slight wear to joints. A fine copy of a binding one would expect to find with faults due to its size and weight but this example is amazingly bright and fresh. Housed in a leather-edged French Marble paper slipcase. All text with decorative frames printed in green. ◆Spine just faintly and evenly sunned but A BEAUTIFUL COPY SPARKLING INSIDE AND OUT.<br/> <br/> This collection of stories of life in the Sahara Desert is not only in a sumptuous binding but its color illustrations are printed with such skill that they seem very much like original paintings. French Orientalist painter Étienne Dinet 1861-1929 met his Arabic teacher and closest friend Sliman ben Ibrahim 1870-1953 in Algeria in 1889 when Sliman saved the painter from an ambush. Sliman accompanied Dinet to Paris in 1896 where the latter met the French Society of Oriental Painters and impressed them with both his character and his couscous. Sliman and Dinet collaborated on several other works including a biography of Mohammed and an account of the Hajj they made to Mecca after Dinet's conversion to Islam. The gorgeous binding by Henri Blanchetière 1881-1933 utilizes rich jewel tones scalloped edges and complex gilt scrolling patterns calling to mind Islamic art and architecture and echoing Dinet's beautiful designs used inside the book. After training with Marcellin Lortic and René Kieffer Blanchetière took over the atelier of binder Joseph Brétault in 1906 at which time "he aligned himself with Marius-Michel in the pursuit of a modern binding style inspired by nature. His designs incorporated a cautious blend of Art Nouveau flowers" and "after World War I he gradually cut his remaining ties to traditionalism."
