Initially reprinted in 1716 from the edition of 1692; this is a Good only copy of a presumed Second Printing from a year later. Not common. Containing the plays "Sejanus his Fal;" "Volpone; or the Fox;" "Epicaone; or The Silent Woman;" and "The Alchemist. A Comedy." Two of these plays remain in constant reperatory today. With brownspotting and signs of use throughout. Small tears to some blank margins. Two leaves more worn to the lower margin just touching one engraving and a line of text resulting in very minor loss. Titl-page within woodcut printed border. Illustrated throughout with 14 large 77 x 115 cm woodcut illustrations and 13 large illustrated woodcut initials ca 32 x 32 cm. 33 ff. In spite of its signs of frequent use the book is in very good condition for this type of work which is usually in extremely poor condition. <br/><br/><em>A beautifully illustrated and very rare 18th century Haggadah setting forth the order of the Passover Seder; fully complete with 14 large woodcut illustrations inspired by the "Amsterdam Haggadah" from 1695. The commentary by Rav Leone Modena found in this Hagadah the famous “Tzeli Esh†is an abbreviation of Don Isaac Abrabanel’s voluminous commentary “Zevach Pesach†first published during the author’s lifetime in Constantinople in 1505. The translation of the “Tzeli Esh†into Yiddish is by Solomon Zalman ben Moses Raphael London 1661-1748 author and translator who was active between 1709 and 1735. Leon de Modena or Yehuda Aryeh Mi-Modena 1571-1648 is considered the most famous Venetian Rabbi of the 17th century. He was a Jewish scholar born in Venice into a family of migrants from France after the French expulsion of Jews. He was well respected but his reputation within traditional Judaism suffered both due to his criticism of emerging sects within Judaism but also because of his addiction to gambling and seeming lack of stability. He is famous for his criticism of the mystical approach to Judaism and his attacks on the Kaballa but his international fame mainly rests upon him being the interpreter of Judaism to the Christian world. He was the first since Josephus and Philo to write a Jewish text to non-Jewish readers Historia de gli riti Hebraici 1637 which was widely read by Christians and extremely influential. The editor Naftali Hertz ben Alexander Ziskind Levi Rofe of Emden “set up his press in Amsterdam in 1726. He complemented his printing equipment with that purchased from the Isaac Templo press after it was closed down. He was a physician by profession as evidenced by his moniker Rofe. He was granted title of doctor of medicine from the University of Harderwijk in 1716. He pursued his medical practice as well as printing and bookselling. He was a member of a small group of Jewish intellectuals interested in scientific disputes. He tended to publish alone as well as in cooperation with others but above all with his son-in-law Kosman ben Joseph Baruch who was also involved in the book trade. First edition of this strange work of mystical theology and “astral light.†The author who Brunet calls a madman rambles almost incoherently about the fall of man and the resulting supernatural forces that operate in and around humanity. He claims that Adam’s sin caused faith to be at odds with reason and the “abuse†of reason further distances humans from God. His focus is on the different degrees of light in the universe—natural magical astral supernatural celestial and divine—and how to harness them for good. He encourages the pious to reject materiality and “gross bodies†and seek truth in the magnetism and light abounding within the spirit realm. Amidst this intangible theosophizing he interjects some radical dogmatic opinions including the non-existence of hell and the immaculate conception of Mary. <br /> <br /> Dutoit-Membrini 1721-1793 was a Swiss pastor and founder of the mystical quietist cult of Inner Souls in Lausanne. His life was marked by periods of debilitating sickness after each of which he emerged progressively more committed to Catholic mysticism. More on him: See below "Pene Aryeh" Lion's Face a volume of responsa is distinguished by its logical method and reveals a thorough knowledge of the Talmud. Recognizing the latter work as the highest authority the author always applied common sense to the elucidation of Biblical and Talmudic precepts. While respecting the post-Talmudic authors he wrote entirely independently of them and without prejudice. Aside from Talmudic questions the "Pene Aryeh" also contains answers to other matters which bring out the author's thorough knowledge of Hebrew linguistics. The style of the responsa is simple and clear the language being that of the Mishnah with an admixture of pure Hebrew phraseology without rhetorical flourishes. The work on the whole reveals a serious scholarly mind. Source: Jewish Encyclopedia. Front board detached but present with marble completely worn off at front board. Owner's inscription on front endpaper. Backstrip unhinged. First three leaves are loose but present. Moderate rippling and water staining throughout not affecting text. On the author Source: Jewish Encyclopedia: Breslau Aryeh Löb Ben Hayyim. German Talmudist and Rabbi; born in 1741 at Breslau Prussia; died April 22 1809 at Rotterdam Holland. He lived at Lissa Posen and later at Berlin where he was an inmate of the bet ha-midrash of the philanthropist Daniel Jafe. From Berlin he went to Emden Prussia as city and district rabbi. In 1781 he was called as chief rabbi to Rotterdam. Breslau was highly reputed as Talmudist as is shown by his many responsa and by the fact that such celebrated men as Phineas Hurwitz Isaiah Berlin and David Tevele Schiff referred Talmudic questions to him. He was also distinguished by his knowledge of the secular sciences. He enjoyed great popularity in Holland and his reputation was not confined to Jewish circles but many Christian scholars and theologians were also among his friends. Ad 1: One of two probably simultaneous issues of the rarer of the first two French editions all dated 1743 of a chronicle of the kings of England that covers the period 1066-1603 first published in English in 1740. Robert Dodsley 1703-64 was a poet playwright and bookseller. Other sources ascribe it to Lord Chesterfield. Dodsley could not have written a work showing so much wit and literary force DNB. The present French translation is attributed to Louis Charles Fougeret de Monbron.Ad 2: Letters from Calvin addressed to Jacques the Bourgogne and Yolande de Brederode written between 1543 and 1553. They offer a case study in the interaction of politics and personalities that shaped the European reform movement in general and the position of Calvin in connection with the worldly powers of Europe in particular. Jacques de Bourgogne who encountered evangelical ideas in Louvain married into one of Holland's most prominent protestant families was denounced as a heretic for receiving a Reformed preacher at his chateau in Brabant sought refuge in Cologne Strasbourg and Basel and finally settled with Calvin's help in a village near Geneva. De Bourgogne's odyssey is exemplary for the upheavals experienced by a generation that heeded the reformer's call preferring exile to renouncing their new faith under pressure in their native lands.Ad 3: Very rare first and only edition of an up-to-date account of the political situation at the courts of Europe in the 1740s. The goal of the author described only as A. C. and not identified is to achieve a stable peace in Europe and to guarantee the authority awarded in the Pragmatic Sanction of 1713. This was a legal mechanism designed to ensure that the Austrian throne and Habsburg lands would be inherited by Emperor Charles VI's daughter Maria Theresa. It was part of the law of the house of Austria. Hungary which had an elective kingship had accepted the house of Habsburg as hereditary kings in the male line without election in 1687 but had not accepted semi-Salic inheritance. The Emperor-King agreed that if the Habsburg male line became extinct Hungary would once again have an elective monarchy. The Kingdom of Bohemia also followed this rule. Ad 4: Extremely rare extract of the funeral oration for André-Hercule Cardinal de Fleury French Bishop of Fréjus 1653 - 29 January 1743 and cardinal who served as the chief minister to Louis XV. The additional remarks are abstracted from a conversation between two French officers on their return from the Bohemian campaign. Fleury found the nation poorly prepared when in 1733 war was forced upon France. Library bookplate on inside front cover. He was the Vicar of Hendon for sixty-three years. As a young man he collected a magnificent library which he had sumptuously bound. The majority of his collection were bound by Charles Lewis or John Clarke often in the style of 17th century fine binding. His library was sold at auction in London in 1827. He lived almost another 50 years post-sale. An uncommon example of a cured bilbiomaniac - an example to which I cannot relate!<br /> <br /> ABOUT BEN JOHNSON <br /> <br /> Benjamin Jonson June 1572 – August 1637 was an English poet and playwright. Jonson's artistry exerted a lasting influence on English poetry and stage comedy. He popularized the comedy of humors. He is best known for the satirical plays Every Man in His Humour 1598 Volpone or The Fox c. 1606 The Alchemist 1610 and Bartholomew Fair 1614 and for his lyric and epigrammatic poetry. He is regarded by most modern scholars as the second most important English dramatist after William Shakespeare during the reign of James I.<br /> <p>Jonson was a classically educated well-read and cultured man of the English Renaissance with an appetite for controversy personal and political artistic and intellectual. His cultural influence was of unparalleled breadth upon the playwrights and the poets of the Jacobean era 1603–1625 and of the Caroline era 1625–1642.<br /> <br /> In 1616 Jonson received a yearly pension of 100 marks about £60 leading some to identify him as England's first Poet Laureate although the royal family never formally granted him the title.<br /> <br /> There are many legends about Jonson's rivalry with Shakespeare. Thomas Fuller relates stories of Jonson and Shakespeare engaging in debates at the Mermaid Tavern. That the two men knew each other personally is beyond doubt not only because of the tone of Jonson's references to him but because Shakespeare's company produced a number of Jonson's plays at least two of which Every Man in His Humour and Sejanus His Fall Shakespeare certainly acted in. Jonson's most influential and revealing commentary on Shakespeare is the second of the two poems that he contributed to the prefatory verse that opens Shakespeare's First Folio. This poem "To the Memory of My Beloved the Author Mr. William Shakespeare and What He Hath Left Us" did a good deal to create the traditional view of Shakespeare as a poet who despite "small Latine and lesse Greeke"60 had a natural genius. The poem has traditionally been thought to exemplify the contrast which Jonson perceived between himself the disciplined and erudite classicist scornful of ignorance and skeptical of the masses and Shakespeare represented in the poem as a kind of natural wonder whose genius was not subject to any rules except those of the audiences for which he wrote.</p> . The front endpaper has a note that is signed and dated by Drach: "Etudie et annote ce volume; supplee lets mots ronges par les vers et corrige les fautes typographiques." Notes to margins. Introductory note by Drach lauding the book: "Le calendrier juif dont les calculs sont d'une exactitude admirable etait deja en usage du temps de Rabbie Gamliel pas consequents a l'epoque ou le Verbe eternel caro factum est et habitavit in nobis." <br /> <br /> 8vo. 40 in Hebrew letters numbered leaves i.e. 80pp. re-cased in later vellum with leather strips. "The volvelles as well as hand diagrams and tables were some of the tools used not just for calculating and identifying pivotal dates and worshipping times for Jews but also for ascertaining Christan holidays. This knowledge was a critical aid for protecting Jews from the danger posed by their having different worshipping times and habits from the dominant culture. The headings on the wheel denote the arrival of the new moon which marks the start of the Jewish month and the cycle of the sun. Whereas calendars appear in general to be a “convenient way to coordinate human movements with natural time†as Elisheva Carlebach points out the Sefer ‘Evronot demonstrates that the methods for doing so are culturally and historically shaped. The wheel computing information with each push of a finger demands interaction from the reader in order to yield knowledge not just to use but to live by."
