Featuring some of Beardsley's last completed illustrations First Beardsley edition deluxe issue number 79 of 100 copies printed on japon paper specially bound in full vellum and featuring an extra suite of five plates with larger versions of Beardsley's vignettes. In November 1897 Beardsley was commissioned to produce 24 illustrations for this edition of Jonson's Volpone including a frontispiece decorative initials and a front cover design. In the event he could only complete the cover design the frontispiece and six vignettes before his death on 16 March 1898. This was however a project that Beardsley was passionate about writing "I am making pictures of Ben Jonson's adorable and astonishing Volpone" and "I carry Volpone about with me from dawn to dawn and dream of nothing else". He considered his illustration for the frontispiece "Volpone Adoring His Treasure" as "one of the strongest things I have ever done" cited in Nelson p. 163. Large quarto. Printed cover design frontispiece and 6 vignettes by Beardsley 5 of the vignettes reproduced in large size in photogravure title printed in red and black. Original vellum over bevelled boards spine lettered and ruled in gilt front cover with overall design by Beardsley incorporating title rear cover with centred publisher's device blocked in gilt top edge gilt others untrimmed. Second edition printed in the same year as the FIRST EDITION. To this edition which is practically identical to the first a decorative title-page has been added with a phrase from the Book of Job printed on verso. Also added here is a Rabbinical Approbation "Words of Praise from The Wise Men of the Censor of Warsaw" as well as a 4-page Subscribers' list bound at the end which are not present in the earlier edition. Written in Hebrew mostly in Rashi script. Joseph Schönhak was born at Tiktin 1812; died at Suwalki 1870. He led a retired life devoting his time to writing and study. He was the author of "Ha-Mashbir" or "Aruk he-Hadash" Warsaw 1858. His "Toldath Haaretz" Toledot ha-Arez is a natural history in three parts. The subjects are arranged and classified and a full description of each is given as to color form and habitat. Those that are mentioned in the Bible are given book chapter and verse; and so with those mentioned in the Talmud. The "Ha-Masbir" is an Aramaic-German rabbinical dictionary based on Nathan ben Jehiel's "Aruk" "Hamiluim oder Masbir Hachadasch. Aramäisch-rabinisch-deutsches Wörterbuch Ergenzung zu dem Hamasbir oder Aruch" Warsaw 1869. His "Sefer ha-Milluim" was published in Warsaw in 1869 "Sefer Ha-Miluim Le-Aruch: A dictionary to the Talmud and Midrashim based on the order of the Aruch with clarification of readings and sources from the Babylonian and Palestian Talmuds the Tannaitic Midrahsim ." was reprinted 1978 Jerusalem Makor. He is best remembered today as Winston Churchill's greatest personal and political friend. Smith was created Viscount Birkenhead of Birkenhead in the County of Chester in the 1921 Birthday Honours then Viscount Furneaux of Charlton in the County of Northampton and finally Earl of Birkenhead in 1922. Bound in half straight grained morocco with cloth covered boards. Externally sound with rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Minor fading to the spines with the odd small mark to the boards. Light loss to the heads of the spines. Front hinge starting but firm to volume eight. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Minor age toning to the endpapers.
