Written during the struggle for Italian independence and the rise of German nationalism Linton a printer poet engraver and friend of Mazzini published numerous articles on liberal subjects from his press in Branston. </p> <br /> <p>This broadside appears to be a proof printing of the two poems and could very well be from Linton's press in Brantwood. OCLC reports only copies in the Linton Archive at Yale the source for the printing date of 1866 for the proof sheet.</p> . Printed for the Author unknown

A bound copy of a weekly souvenier publication which was produced to mark the 1857 Art Treasures Exhibition which was held in Manchester. It remains the largest art exhibition ever to be held in the UK if not the World with over 16000 exhibits. It attracted over 1.3 million visitors in the 142 days it was open. The two chromolithographs show the building - a temporary iron-and-glass structure similar to the Crystal Palace in London 656 feet long and 200 feet wide with one central barrel vault 56 feet wide. Its selection and display of artworks had a formative influence on the public art collections that were then being established in the UK such as the National Gallery National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum. A collection of poetry by the engraver William James Linton. With the play 'Claribel' and the poems 'The Old Legend of King Arthur' 'The Ruined City' 'Nature's Gentleman' 'The Advent of Peace' 'Two Stories of One Fate' 'Principle and Opinion' and more. Illustrated with head and tail pieces throughout illustrated by the author. William James Linton was an Englishman who emigrated to America to try his fortune after suffering from financial difficulties in England. He is said to have reached the highest point of execution in engraving in wood. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally with a crack to the tail of the front joint. Light marking to the boards. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Label to the rear pastedown. Hinges are starting but firm. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front free endpaper '. from her loving Uncle J.E.D. Christmas 1870'. Internally firmly bound. Work on the Whitehaven and Furness Railway initially intended for horse pulled carriages carrying minerals etc. was started in in 1847 and opened in November 1850 just two years before the publication of this book. This small book with its original blind-decorated covers with gilt lettering has the text-block is detached from the covers and early pages are loose. It appears that the book has at some time been partially immersed in water with water-staining on the plates and end-papers pages are generally clean.
