Once bound in with other issues the newspaper has been removed with chipping and glue stains along the inner edges of the cover pages. There are a couple of tiny tears to the front edges of the cover pages with a couple of chipped corners. 20 pages numbered 89 to 108 printed on news stock profusely illustrated including works by Thomas Nast William James Linton & others. There are tiny tears to the front edges of the pages and minor creases to the corners. Good.</p><p>There is much on the troubles brewing in Louisiana including the dispatch from Sheridan to the Secretary of War. A woodcut of a Dunce cap for the Banditti on the cover page illustrates a statement condemning the "Ringleaders of the Armed White Leagues" "who have covered the South with murder and assassination. Burned schoolhouses."</p><p>This issue includes three engravings by Thomas Nast "General Sheridan Stands by His Dispatches" one depicting Ulysses S. Grant's message on Louisiana Affairs: "At The Door: U.S.G. 'If I hammer long enough perhaps they'll wake up'" an engraving illustrating a letter titled "Bayonets and Legislation" published in the January 9th issue of the New York Herald Tribune illustrating the article titled "Advertising for an assassin of the President of the United States U.S. Grant". Completed by Dante Gabriel Rossetti after Gilchrist's death. Ex-library. Recased in brown cloth with original front and back leather covers affixed stamped in illustrated gilt. Spines stamped in gilt. The text is beautifully illustrated throughout "in facsimilé by W.J. Linton and in photolithography" and features many illustrations from Blake's original plates. Library numbers in white ink on spines blind stamp to title pages and at bottom of page 41 in both volumes. Otherwise the text blocks are in fine condition. Cloth binding is near fine with infinitesimal rubbing to corners heads and heels of spines. Work on the Whitehaven and Furness Railway initially intended for horse pulled carriages carrying minerals etc. was started in in 1847 and opened in November 1850 just two years before the publication of this book. This small book with its original blind-decorated covers with gilt lettering has the text-block is detached from the covers and early pages are loose. It appears that the book has at some time been partially immersed in water with water-staining on the plates and end-papers pages are generally clean. WILLIAM JAMES LINTON the Victorian wood engraver poet artist book illustrator and social reformer moved into Brantwood in Coniston in 1852 and bought the house the following year. In 1857 his wife died and in the following year he married Eliza Lynn afterward known as Mrs Lynn Linton and returned to London. In 1864 he retired to Brantwood his wife remaining in London. Between 1858 and 1864 while Linton was living in London the house was let to Gerald Massey poet and Egyptologist. Linton emigrated with his children to America in 1867. John Ruskin bought the house in 1871. Before Ruskin came to Brantwood in the following year he arranged for repairs to the house the addition of a turret. Folio; approx. 12 x 10 inches.
