Very good. - Typed letter filling most of one side of a cream-colored 7-1/4 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide sheet of "Yale University / Institute of Human Relations" letterhead. Signed "Ralph Linton". There is very light creasing to the top left corner of the letterhead. Folded twice for mailing. Near fine. <p>Linton writes to Harold Rugg of Columbia University's Teachers College gladly accepting an invitation to take part in one of Rugg's lunch-time forums at the college. "As regards what subject to address I think perhaps the most interesting material that I could give would be a report on recent developments in studies of personality and culture; I am still deep in this work and have come a good way from the time when I was working with Kardiner."<p>Abram Kardiner 1891-1981 was a psychiatrist and pioneering psychoanalyst who made major contributions to psychological and psychoanalytic anthropology.<p>Ralph Linton 1893-1953 was a respected American anthropologist particularly remembered for his texts "The Study of Man" 1936 and "The Tree of Culture" 1955. One of his major contributions to anthropology was defining a distinction between status and role.<p>Harold Rugg 1886-1960 was an educational reformer associated with the Progressive education movement. Originally trained in civil engineering he went on to study psychology sociology and education at the University of Illinois. After teaching at the University of Chicago from 1915 to 1920 he took a job at the Teachers College of Columbia University where he stayed until he retired in 1951. Red cloth boards pictorially stamped in black. Spot of soiling to fore-edge of text block. Small hole in the ffep; the author's promotional label with a small portrait is affixed to the ffep. A few pages show minor spots of soiling. Dust jacket has a little bit of chipping at spine ends and bottom fore-corners; spot of soiling on rear panel. DJ in archival sleeve. Seven illustrated plates. 210 pp. 7.5 x 5.25 inches. A dramatic novel of pioneer life in Oregon set in the period of the 1860's and early 1870's. It begins with a storm and shipwreck off of the Yachats rocks and the rescue of an ailing sailor and a baby. Revelations of the infant's identity are followed by adventures on land and at sea. Much of the action takes place in Oregon. Charles Ellsworth Linton 1865-1930 was an Oregon author and doctor who lived in the Waldport area on the coast. He was born in Iowa but by 1895 was residing in Nehalem; a few years later he served as the second mayor of Warrenton 1899. He ran the Gem drug store in Astoria just after the turn of the century and about 1904 moved to Alsea Bay. In 1909 he served as the postmaster of the Lutgens Bayshore post office and was the proprietor of Waldport pharmacy. He was the author of several books. According to his obituary these earned him the sobriquet of "The Jules Verne of Oregon. Press of the Interstate Bindery hardcover
