Two volumes in original mottled calf: the end of the rear board of volume 1 has been expertly recovered with dyed calf to match corners polished to blend in. Some reveal to hinge volume 1 and wear to the raised bands gilt compartments on both volumes cords partially revealed and holding. Internals unfoxed clean crisp plates and text. In volume 1 there is a shaved edge to rear leaves resulting in shallow loss to last bundle of chairs at midsection outer margins not affecting text block or plate. A very nice unspohisticated copy. The Essay defines ‘picturesque’ as ‘a term expressive of that peculiar kind of beauty which is agreeable in a picture’ Essay on Prints 2 but does not develop the definition." Boards show moderate scuffing and general wear rear board has staining to the lower quadrant near the spine. Binding sound text and plates very clean though slightly rippled. Price was an architectural surveyor who held the position of "surveyor and clerk of the fabric of Salisbury Cathedral" for seventeen years. Period Cambridge-style calf paneled in blind very skillfully rebacked spine in six compartments divided by raised bands ruled in gilt red leather lettering piece gilt. An excellent copy the binding tight and secure text generally clean and free of foxing plates good impression barring the first frontispiece which is a bit weak. Henrey 937 939 and 943. The Clergy-Man’s recreation originally published in 1714 was Laurence's first published treatise on gardening and was devoted almost exclusively to culture and training of fruit trees and is of special historical interest according to Henrey for its early mention of transmission of a viruses by grafting. The gentleman’s recreation giving " some additional improvements and observation" relating to fruit trees followed in 1716 and The fruit-garden kalendar in 1718. The very practical nature of Laurence's treatises made them extremely popular including with the colonists in America. N. B. A detailed travel guide to London's architecture monuments fashionable squares and statues from "mere Gothic heaps of stone without form or order" to the stately works of Inigo Jones Christopher Wren and the influence of Venetian Andrea Palladio. The entertaining narrative begins in the center of London and meanders out to Westminster Abbey and further still to the recently built Grosvenor Square. In the Poet's Corner at Westminster the narrator comments on the absence of John Milton and William Shakespeare and of Grosvenor Square he writes that "there is no harmony or agreement in the parts which compose it." The Critical Survey has traditionally and convincingly been attributed to American James Ralph who was born in Philadelphia around 1700 and in 1725 moved to London with his friend Benjamin Franklin. Ralph was an erudite and prolific Grub Street author pamphleteer playwright and poet who had a wide range of interests that is reflected in the variety of subjects he wrote about. According to Franklin he "was ingenious and shrewd genteel in his manners and extremely eloquent . . ." His guide to the architecture of London went through several subsequent revised editions. First editions thus of these catalogues and exceedingly rare complete salesman sample kit for the Wagner Manufacturing garage door hardware in the 1920s. After World War I the explosion and popularity of automobile ownership in the United States created a desperate need to house these often cantankerous and essential machines for homes businesses and commercial fleets. By quickly adapting their hardware sets for elevator doors first introduced before World War I Wagner was able to quickly capitalize on the market growth and need for door hardware to retrofit existing garages as well as new construction. Often coupled with doors produced by Johnson Fimbel Hartford Barber-Colman Overhead and Crawford the Wagner hardware sets proved durable and popular. In addition this sample kit features the specialized steel stud brackets developed by Wagner to help brace garages and sheds adapted for garage doors to hold automobiles as the weight of the doors could damage existing construction as Americans were interested in rolling doors and sectional garage doors rather than traditional swing-out barn-type doors. Wagner 1871-1937 originally founded his company in Cedar Falls IA in 1904 to manufacture children’s sleds coaster wagons and hay rack fixtures with a variety of door hardware. They merge with Star Elevator Doors before World War I and later with Boardman Elevator Control of Chicago with primary customers as Otis Elevator and Westinghouse. In 1934 Wagner began producing the iconic Wagner Overhead Garage Door and by the 1950s had become one of the largest garage door manufacturers in the country. Owen Smythe of Condover Park and loosely inserted is the later armorial bookplate of Reginald Cholmondeley of Condover Hall also loosely inserted is a further publishers' catalogue of 16 pages uncut and partially unopened the first page of which is detached; finely bound in full red crushed morocco with ornate gilt decoration on both covers the spine gilt with raised bands and a small black morocco label contained in a custom-made box of marbled paper over boards a red calf spine and cloth lined; the binder is not known but the inked initials "T.A.B. 1974" on the rear endpaper may identify them. From the library of the gardening historian Anthony Huxley with his stamp on the front endpaper. RARE. First published in 1767 the Sir John Soane Library suggests this is probably the third edition of this pattern book although the second could also be possible. The decorative plates depict buildings by Michelangelo and Vignola.<br> As D’Aviler’s book went through the printers it grew wings – more large folding plates which he inserted at the last minute including plans of gardens palaces and details of ironwork. What had started as an attractive and accessible guide to the Orders intended to inform clients artisans and fellow architects now became a platform for D’Aviler’s own architectural ambitions. Further plates were engraved but there was no room in the first edition or a second in 1694 and so alongside them D’Aviler prepared drawings for an enlarged edition.<br> Work on the new edition was continued by his son Nicholas Langlois II who had ‘acquired a very large quantity of new Drawings & Explanations both from the Author and from several other excellent Architects Painters & Draftsmen… with which to increase & embellish this Work.’ The death of the younger Langlois and the sale of the business to a cousin Jean Mariette delayed the larger edition of the Cours until 1710.<br> Mariette admired D’Aviler and compiled his biography. He mounted D’Aviler’s designs Boulogne’s frontispiece and other architects’ drawings for the Cours on sheets in a portfolio which joined more than 100 others to make up one of history’s greatest collections of drawings.<br> The frontispiece by Louis de Boulogne’s shows Architecture appearing as a young woman. She sits leaning on an altar with a Corinthian capital at her feet compasses in one hand and a portrait of Vignola in the other. Behind her are the ruins of Rome. Louis de Boulogne was the King’s Premier peintre but he was also D’Aviler’s close friend and the architect has corrected the painter’s perspective at the foot of the altar. He is often considered the most important architect in Rome in the Mannerist era. His two great masterpieces are the Villa Farnese at Caprarola and the Jesuits' Church of the Gesů in Rome. The earliest Regola delli cinque ordini d'architettura "Canon of the five orders of architecture" first published in 1562 probably in Rome presented Vignola's practical system for constructing columns in the five classical orders Tuscan Doric Ionic Corinthian and Composite utilising proportions which Vignola derived from his own measurements of classical Roman monuments. The clarity and ease of use of Vignola's treatise caused it to become in succeeding centuries the most published book in architectural history.
