Former owner's name on front free endpaper verso: Samuel J. Dornsife. Bookplate on front fixed endpaper indicating that the book belonged to the Victorian Society in America at the Athenaeum of Philadelphia and was from the Dornsife Collection. Stamped: "This book is no longer the property of the Athenaeum of Philadelphia." Pencilled note along gutter of plate no. 43. The only copy we have seen or see reference to that has 102 numbered plates rather than 100. See Hitchcock 1435-1437 all calling for 100 plates. Samuel J. Dornsife 1916-1999 pioneered authentic restoration and recreation of 19th-century interiors for both houses and museums. In Good Condition: back board detached but present; front board partially detached; lacking leather from tail of spine; boards are rubbed; plates 88-102 reattached by old repair; otherwise clean and solid; all plates are present. 1857004588London: Chapman & Hall 1857. This is a very good hardcover copy in red and black marbled paper-covered boards and a brown cloth spine and corners. Recently de-accessioned from a small public library non-circulating and bearing a few of their marks including a painted label on the spine bookplates inside the covers handstamps and a perforation stamp to the title pages. Occasional handstamps to the plate description pages facing the plates. Plates clean. There are 30 monochrome plates and 12 chromolithographs including the title-page. The plates are quite beautiful and show objects like royal jewelry and old church artifacts some armament and some antiquities like small public statuary and memorials. 13" high X 10" wide 84 page text plates. Leather remains very much intact though slightly chipped at crown of spine and with light evidence of repair at upper front joint lightly rubbed bands and joints slight cracking and/or creasing to spine labels with a bit of loss to author label minimally affecting lettering a bit of exposure at corners. Front pastedown shows armorial book plate of H. R. Bishop and ex-libris plate of James Cunningham Bishop. xiii540 pp. illus. w/ 14 engraved plates as called for with an additional 60 illustrations bound in at various points virtually all engraved plates or vintage reproductions of engravings including a number of hinged double-page plates.
