Text pages variably foxed from a little to very but somehow THE LOVELY PLATES IN FINE CLEAN CONDITION--fresh and bright with pleasing coloring in an unworn sympathetic binding. This is a rare complete colored set of Hüber's famed views of Pompeii much sought-after by armchair travellers after excavations uncovered that urban time capsule in the late 18th century. The German-born Hüber 1787-1871 settled in Naples in his early 20s studying landscape painting with Dutch émigré painter Jacob Philipp Hackert 1737-1807 who was known for his lush scenes often featuring ruins. His arrival in the region coincided with the occupation of Naples by the French who accelerated the excavations underway at Pomepii which had been buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. The rapid burial of the city in volcanic ash had captured a moment in time and the opportunity to see a well-preserved example of life in the ancient Roman Empire caught in medias res drew eager travellers on the Grand Tour of the Continent. Hüber's well-executed views often picture these tourists and their contemporary dress contrasts sharply with the classical ruins. Lord Napier in his "Notes on Modern Painting at Naples" 1855 credits Hüber for introducing the use of watercolors to the meticulously drawn landscapes then being produced. This innovation is displayed in the hand-colored plates here which were also issued in uncolored state. Napier was correct to appreciate the value of adding colors which increases both the drama of the views and the pleasure of the viewer. Because the attractive sets with color were often broken up complete volumes of the colored plates are rarely seen for sale: we could trace just three such copies sold at auction as listed in RBH and ABPC the two best ones were the Feltrinelli copy which sold for $14330 in 2001 and the Donaueschingen copy fetching $13750 in 2014. Ours does not have the distinguished provenance attached to those copies and it lacks two preliminary leaves but the text is present and most important the lovely colored plates are in fine condition. by the author and Henry Fuessli and Comp unknown

Originally published in English as Fisher's Picturesque Illustrations of Great Britain and Ireland: The Fourth Series Comprising the Splendid Lake Scenery Seats &c. of Westmorland Cumberland Durham & Northumberland. A beautiful collection of English views. In Very Good Condition: slightly cocked; ends of spine rubbed with minor loss; corners rubbed and bumped; spines are faded; lacking one corner of spine label on vol. 1; otherwise labels are intact; occasional foxing primarily along fore-edges of plate leaves; otherwise clean and bright. William Henry Denham Rouse 30 May 1863-February 1950 Pioneering British Educator Who Advocated The Use Of The Direct Method Of Teaching Latin And Greek; And With A Few Small Oval Stamps Of The English Library Cambridge. Born In Calcutta India On 31 May 1863 Rouse Gained A Double First In The Classical Tripos At The University Of Cambridge Where He Also Studied Sanskrit. He Became A Fellow Of Christ's College Cambridge In 1888. After Brief Spells At Bedford School And Cheltenham College He Became A Schoolmaster At Rugby School Where He Encouraged Arthur Ransome - Against His Parents' Wishes - To Become A Writer. Ransome Later Wrote "My Greatest Piece Of Good Fortune In Coming To Rugby Was That I Passed So Low Into The School . That I Came At Once Into The Hands Of A Most Remarkable Man Whom I Might Otherwise Never Have Met. This Was Dr W.H.D. Rouse." Rouse Was Appointed Headmaster Of The Perse School Cambridge In 1902. While In Charge He Restored It To A Sound Financial Footing Following A Crisis. As A Teacher He Believed Firmly In Learning By Doing As Well As Seeing And Hearing: Although The Curriculum At The Perse Was Dominated By Classics He Urged That Science Should Be Learned Through Experiment And Observation. He Was A Strong Personality Described By The Archivist Of The Perse School As The School's Greatest Headmaster: "Rouse Was Strongly Independent To The Point Of Eccentricity. He Hated Most Machines All Bureaucracy And Public Exams." He Retired From Teaching In 1928. In 1911 Rouse Started A Successful Series Of Summer Schools For Teachers To Promulgate The Direct Method Of Teaching Latin And Greek. The Association For The Reform Of Latin Teaching Arlt Was Formed In 1913 As A Result Of These Seminars. Also In 1911 James Loeb Chose W. H.D. Rouse Together With Two Other Eminent Classical Scholars T. E. Page And Edward Capps To Be Founding Editors Of The Loeb Classical Library. Rouse Is Known For His Plain English Prose Translations Of Homer's Ancient Greek Epic Poems The Odyssey 1937 And The Iliad 1938.
