1919144745Egypt: Privately Published 1919. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Egypt Privately Published circa 1919. Oblong folio an album containing 96 original gelatin silver photographs each approximately 66 × 110 mm loosely inserted behind window mounts each with a printed caption four to a page on both sides of 12 leaves. Burgundy cloth lettered in gilt on the front cover beneath the Rising Sun emblem; covers slightly worn with some tarnishing to the gilt; occasional inoffensive silvering-out; in excellent condition. A scarce self-published photographic record of the 2nd Light Horse Brigade in the Sinai and Palestine campaign from the Battle of Romani 3-5 August 1916 to the capture of Gaza 1-2 November 1917 by way of Al Arish Rafah Khan Yunis Deir al-Balah and Wadi Gaza. Apart from a dozen 'local colour' photographs all relate directly to actions of the ANZAC Mounted Division including snapshots taken in action ambulance and field hospital units troop movements captured Ottoman and German soldiers the daily life of Australian Light Horse men including horse races and surfing and railway and bridging projects. <p>The lettering at the bottom corner of the cover has led institutional and trade cataloguers to attribute this album to 'Tpr. J. Ellis'. No Ellis appears in the nominal roll of the 7th Light Horse. However one 'T. Ellis' is listed as wounded in action in the official history of the regiment and a search of service records leads us to suggest that 564 Private Thomas Ellis is most likely the compiler and photographer. After enlisting with the 2nd Light Horse Field Ambulance in December 1914 he served at Gallipoli. Attached to the 7th Light Horse Regiment also part of the 2nd Light Horse Brigade in August 1916 he was wounded in action soon after a gunshot wound to the neck before returning to active duty with the 7th Light Horse until the middle of 1918 at which point he returned to the 2nd Light Horse Field Ambulance. The preponderance of photographs showing ambulance units would seem to support this attribution. <p>The album must have been compiled for presentation to fellow Light Horse men in a period of leave most likely in Egypt between February and April 1919 or possibly afterwards in London. Comparison with other examples suggests that Ellis had identical tooling applied to a range of similar but not identical commercial albums accounting for the different appearance of the covers and mounts in other copies we have traced the mounts in this example have a Vidalon-lès-Annonay watermark. All copies have 'Sent by Name' inscribed on the front pastedown; although this is in a uniform hand it is not written by Ellis see his digitised service record for examples of his handwriting. <p>Provenance: 'Sent by Lcpl. S. Vohr' is inscribed in ink on the front pastedown of this copy. Sophus Carl Vohr of Jamestown South Australia enlisted at Morphettville on 19 August 1914; his service number - 32 - is a reflection of his very early enlistment. A Gallipoli veteran he saw action in the Middle East with the 3rd Light Horse Regiment. Privately Published hardcover

Octavo viii 108 vi 84 pages printed on handmade paper plus 16 pages of plates 2 folding maps and 2 folding facsimile documents. Gilt-pictorial vellum top edge gilt others uncut and unopened; one opening slightly tanned from the ribbon marker; a fine copy in the original plain paper dustwrapper a little sunned and torn with the title added later in ink on the spine. Number 190 of only 200 copies numbered and signed by Thomas Gill. This is a deluxe enlarged edition of a work first published as the Supplement to Volume 11 of the Proceedings of the RGSSA in the same year. The extra material includes text maps and facsimile documents. <p>We have only encountered the dustwrapper once before and the small oval label of the 'Government Printing Office Adelaide S.A.' gilt on red cloth mounted on the rear pastedown is uncommon in our experience. Loosely inserted are two interesting pieces of ephemera indicating that this was one of several copies offered for sale by ballot to members of the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia South Australian Branch in 1978. The Society was the original publisher and it purchased the author's collection after his death in 1923 so these retained copies - released nearly 70 years after the work was published - could have come from either source. With 101 tipped-in original silver gelatin sepia-tinted photographs ranging in size from 2 in. rounds to 5.5 x 9.95 in. and all are mounted into the albums most with printed text captions. Original brown half-suede over brown softcovers yapp edges stamped gilt N.E.L.A. logo and title on front cover stamped in gilt minor edgewear rubbing still VG exemplar. First edition of this lavishly produced souvenir album filled with original photographs of the antics by participants for the National Electric Lamp Association at their Camp National. Association Island in Henderson Harbor NY was purchased in 1905 from private owners and renamed. This lavishly appointed island contained a town hall dining hall with full staff of waitresses and housekeepers a hospital tent swimming pool areas for tents recreational trap shooting baseball diamonds theatre and marina for sport boating. These photos vividly portray how these mid-summer retreats were filled with conferences but also devoted to the executives reliving the joys of the summer camp retreats of the well-to-do childhoods during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. They created pennants went sport fishing played in tennis tournaments croquet matches poker games baseball games parades costume parties minstrel shows plays parties and more. These Camp National events continued on a more subdued scale after General Electric acquired N.E.L.A. and began using Association Island as a corporate retreat and training center for GE executives customers and employees through the end of the 1950s. The Elfun Society General Electric’s famed think-tank was founded in 1928 on the Island and named in honor of the historic elm tree depicted in the decorative borders. General Electric’s use of Association Island even served as the basis for Kurt Vonnegut’s first novel Player Piano in 1952 a satire of the antics of engineers and managers of a large unnamed corporation on their annual retreat. The National Electric Lamp Association was founded at the end of the 19th century during a great deal of turmoil in the incandescent lamp industry and a number of small lamp manufacturers needed to pool their resources in order to compete with General Electric. Ironically Franklin Terry Burton & Henry Tremaine John & Robert Crouse founded the Company in 1901 with 75% of the needed capital from GE who was to remain a silent partner. A number of the small companies such as Sterling Electric The Economy Electric Co. and many others were able to use the labs set up by N.E.L.A. and within a few years had gained nearly 50% of the total lamp production in the United States. However in 1911 the U.S. Government brought an anti-trust suit against the N.E.L.A. and GE exercised their option to buy the remaining 25% and they officially all became part of General Electric forming the National Quality Lamp Division. First edition of this lavishly produced souvenir album filled with original photographs of the engineering and lighting exhibition retreat held by Sterling at General Electric’s Camp Nela one of the first industrial research parks in the nation. A small plateau above a picturesque ravine this rustic setting would eventually contain a large lamp laboratory and a 72 foot bell tower. The large photos in this souvenir album portray the engineering conferences families playing in the pool lavishly appointed dining hall and the other camp assets. Anne de Beaupre the disaster of March 29th 1922 the relics the miracles the fountain the Cyclorama of the Holy Land etc. "The basilica in Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré was initially a shrine to honor Saint Anne. On March 8 1658 a man by the name of Etienne de Lessard donated two frontal acres from the West end of his property to the Catholic Church so that a chapel could be built. This chapel eventually became the site of the modern-day basilica. It was built for two reasons: to provide a place of worship for the new settlers in the area and to house a miraculous statue of St. Anne. The first reported miracle at the site happened during the shrine’s construction. A man named Louis Guimond was hired to help build the shrine even though he suffered from rheumatism. After placing three stones upon the shrine’s foundation Guimond was cured of all his ailments. This was followed by other testimonies of healed people and the shrine soon grew in popularity. Many pilgrims came to the shrine hoping to receive a miracle. Because of the popularity of the shrine the building was enlarged several times to accommodate all the pilgrims. In 1876 the first basilica opened for worship. On March 29 1922 the basilica was destroyed by fire. The present-day basilica was built on the site of the prior church in 1926." Booklet offers an official guide to the historical sites of the Church of Ste. Anne de Beaupre and also a guide to the historical relics in the vestry. Numerous black and white photographs throughout. Wrappers and spine rubbed and worn and with travel agent's stamp to front wrapper.
