A fifth 160-page volume provides a concise overview of his journey in English and a reprinting in French of his written entries. Le Corbusier was born in France on October 6 1887; died in France on August 27 1965. He had a long and successful career helping to create revolutions in architecture during the middle part of the 20th century. Many of these are still strongly influential to the current day. "The airplane indicts". He loves the airplane for itself form and function material use and as a metaphor for what it and its like will do for humanity. He extolls "The Birds-Eye View" of what man has created and what man must change. Clean throughout. The front free-endpaper is missing; its removal has caused the hinge to be roughened with some loss of paper over the hinge at the bottom. Also the pastedown endpaper has some surface loss at a corner due to the removal. The hinge remains strong; tight binding. Boards are soiled and worn at corners and at the head and tail of the spine; the spine is faded. "The New Vision" was a series begun by The Studio; Aircraft is No.1. Please see the images provided. Uncut copy of this polemical pamphlet by Le Corbusier Charles-Édouard Jeanneret 1887-1965 one of the central figures of twentieth-century modernist architecture and urbanism. Published in the Collection de "L'Esprit Nouveau" the text constitutes a vigorous defense of the modern architectural movement against attacks from academic and institutional circles. It was written as a direct response to a campaign led by the architect Gaston Umbdenstock professor at the École Polytechnique and studio chief at the École des Beaux-Arts who on 14 March 1932 delivered a widely publicized denunciation of modern architecture at the Salle Wagram before an audience convened by the Chambers of Commerce with the support of the Institut de France. Le Corbusier interprets this offensive as representing the interests of traditional building trades threatened by new construction methods such as steel framing reinforced concrete and industrialized techniques that were transforming architecture. The pamphlet opens with the declaration that it introduces no new doctrine but serves purely as a "defense" warning that the real danger to the modern movement lies less in overt academic opposition than in the infiltration of academic attitudes within modernism itself. The immediate occasion for the publication was a request from supporters in Algiers where Le Corbusier had recently delivered well-attended lectures on architecture and urbanism for a response to Umbdenstock's attack which had been widely circulated there.
