Photograph of Claes Oldenburg on site for the 1977 installation and dedication of Oldenburg's large-scale public art installation "Batcolumn" at the US Social Security Administration plaza in downtown Chicago. Photograph with annotation in manuscript pencil on the verso noting the name of German photographer Harry Shunk. Also included are two different vintage programs for the event.<br /> <br /> "Batcolumn" was commissioned by the US General Services Administration and depicts a giant baseball bat constructed in latticework COR-TEN steel and painted gray standing on its knob. The dedication ceremony was held on April 14 1977 and included remarks by Mayor of Chicago Michael A. It is Signed "Mani". 25x 18cm folded in thirds fine n12 A chatty letter written the year before Emanuel Hahn's passing in 1957 thanking Lawrence Hyde for a book probably "Land of the Longest Day" by mutual friend National Film Board film-maker Doug Wilkinson. He writes of work with the N.F.B. Norman Rockwell his move and his wife's work on the sculpture of King George. Dated January 5th, 1956 unknown

Philadelphia All According To The Yellow Label Mounted On The Very Worn Black Backing. An Attractive Portrait Apparently Of Geirge Orwel Circa 1932L Leaning On His Left Hand And Staring Somewhat Belligerently But Resignedly At Viewer Left Hand Has Not Been Finished. This Appears To Be A Portrait Of A Younger Orwell Than Usually Seen Circa Early 1930'S An Intense Young Man With A Small Mustache Eyebrows Thinner And Higher Than Usually Seen But With His Distinctive Right Ear Present. The Portrait Is Not Clearly Orwell In The 1920'S Or 1940'S But Compares Favorably With The Few Early 1930'S Photographs Of Him That We Have Seen.
