Ownership signature on front endpaper of a William John Lafferty Belfast dated 1866. <br /> <br /> A significant work infrequent in commerce. Especially valuable for its coverage of early railway technology an area in which the author was himself expert as he had served as a Consulting Engineer for the Great North of Scotland Railway as early as 1853. The book's four divisions - Railways; Textile Machinery; Metal and Wood Manufacturing Machinery; and "Machinery in General" are each profusely illustrated with both text figures and folding plates. A photographic record of a young American man's tour of Europe and the Paris Exposition accompanied by many beautiful street images of Paris.<br /> <br /> The silver gelatin prints of Paris by the unidentified photographer include wonderful images of Notre Dame cathedral the Eiffel Tower the Opera House Toreador Palace the Church of the Madeleine the Champs Esys and the Arc de Triumph. There are many street scenes including the Rue de Rival L'Avenue de loper Place de la Republic monuments and architecture.<br /> <br /> The tour begins in Scotland and includes a departure at the train station wonderful shot of the train and passengers waiting on the platform as well as thatched roof cottages and gardens castles Edinburgh and London. It concludes with images of the main square in Brussels the Belgian country side and Holland including the iconic windmill shot. The final shot is on board ship the photographer with 2 fellow travelers looking very proud of himself.<br /> <br /> The album 8 x 6". Images 3 x 3 1/2" loosely inserted into card stock mounts. Inscription reads - "Henry S. Cave Compliments of Saml M. Inman Treasurer Atlanta Ga. June 23 1884." H. S. Cave from Atlanta inscription is written on the verso of the frontispiece. Another owners name in pencil on the front paste down "Augusta Wylie King." A later owner's address mailing label located in the upper left corner front paste down. From the New Georgia Encyclopedia:<br /> <br /> Atlanta held its first exposition named the International Cotton Exposition in Oglethorpe Park in 1881. The city then had fewer than 40000 residents and the primary sense in which the first exposition was “international†was the display of cotton plants from around the world. Nevertheless Atlantans were eager to host the 1881 exposition to promote investment and to help the city toward its goal of becoming an industrial center which was a primary component of Grady’s “New South†concept. Although attendance was lower than expected fewer than 200000 in paid attendance during its two-and-a-half-month run city leaders demonstrated that they could work together to host a major event and that Atlanta was serious about its role in textile production at a time when the North was beginning to grow dissatisfied with the efficiency of southern cotton processing. The exposition displayed new crop planters and cotton seed cleaners along with a model of Eli Whitney’s original cotton gin and speakers addressed the crowds about agricultural technology and political reforms. Alphonse Davanne is a most important figure in the early history of photography. Born 1824 in Paris he was a founding member of the Société Française de Photographie the first photographic society in the world and subsequently its vice president and then president. His early collaborations were involved with photolithography and by 1854 he had mastered that process. His next experiments were on developing a direct positive process. Exceptionally handsome tight first edition of this detailed guide to American participation of this world's fair to end all world's fairs held in Paris between 12 April and 12 November 1900. Like all world's fairs its intention was to celebrate mankind's accomplishments and advances in every field imaginable -- but with the debut of the new century it was felt appropriate to celebrate accomplishments of the preceding century as well. This remarkable copy bears a red-bordered 4½" X 3/4" colophon slip typed in blue tipped to an inner flyleaf noting that "Twenty-five copies of this catalogue have been bound in this form for special distribution. This copy is numbered 11." Recipients of this specially-bound edition were likely important politicos of the day. The name of this special recipient has been giltstamped on the front board: "WILLIAM B. ALLISON SENATOR." From the collection of William B. Allison 1829-1908 the powerful Iowa Republican who as U.S. senator from that state 1873-1908 was one of the "big four" who controlled the Senate; as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee for most of those years he championed tariff legislation and co-authored the Bland-Allison Act of 1878; as member of the Senate Finance Committee he was often courted by U.S. presidents to hold cabinet positions. Early 20th century bookplate on front pastedown notes "This book is part of Allison Memorial Collection Gift of Mrs. Jennie A. Brayton" and until deaccessioned was part of Allison's non-circulating collection at his hometown public library across the street from his Dubuque residence. According to Leland L. Sage in his 1956 biography "William Boyd Allison: A Study in Practical Politics" Allison owned "hundreds of books on government economics history banking finance and the tariff as well as volumes of American and English literature. An omnivorous reader Allison doubtless read most of these volumes if only for relaxation from the strain that accompanied his efforts to solve the many problems facing the Nation. Alexander Hamilton was his guidepost in finance Robert Burns his favorite poet and 'The Cotter's Saturday Night' his favorite poem." One oblong atlas folio hand-coloured lithograph sized 25 x 20.5 in. still retaining fairly wide borders printing below centered image colour-tinted border to image some very minor age toning dustsoiling still an excellent copy preserved in the original quarter-sawn oak wood frame 33.5 x 25.5 in. retaining the original glass newly backed in archival foam core framed w/ archival matting. First edition of this impressive first edition birds-eye view of the buildings and sites Centennial International Exhibition with the fairgrounds set above the Schuykill River. This view depicts the Exposition before it was completed and the Halls featured include the Main Building Machinery Hall Memorial Hall Horticultural Hall and Agricultural Hall. Once the construction was complete Toudy issued another version with fuller buildings as well as some changes to the foreground and center of the image. Toudy fl. 1865-1878 first established with William Toudy his lithography firm at 503-505 Chestnut and later merged with Geroge Wl. Ward & Co. in 1872 lasting less than 2 years. Henry became the sole owner by 1875 and were well known for their atlases maps and city views and he worked on several Stone & Stewart County Atlases from 1866-1877 as well as many of the Mid-Atlantic general surveys. They also managed to outlast a lawsuit over a print based on the drawing by Hermann Schwarzmann architect of the Centennial grounds entitled “Bird’s Eye View†after copyrighting this image in 1875. The 1853-54 Exhibition was also vital to the development of iron construction in America including the striking octagonally planned domed structure by Castensen and Gildermeister as well as plans submitted by Paxton Downing & Vaux Bogardus and Hoppin all illustrated here. After the fair closed in November 1854 the New York Crystal Palace sporadically held tradefairs until 1858 when the iron and glass building burned to the ground in less than 30 minutes. An original pen and ink drawing showing Sir Edgar Boehm's 1834 - 1890 statue 'Young Bull and Herdsman' on a large plinth at the foot of the grand staircase at the Melbourne Centennial Exhibition of 1888. <br /> <br /> A stylishly-dressed Victorian crowd of exhibition viewers strolls about the great hall with the statue on a large plinth highlighted with white accents. With the title penned below the image. Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm 1834 - 1890 is recognized for his colossal statues including one of Queen Victoria executed in marble 1869 for Windsor Castle the monument of the duke of Kent in St. George's Chapel the statue of Carlyle on the Thames embankment at Chelsea and the equestrian statue of the Duke of Wellington at Hyde Park Corner. Boehm is also listed as a British exhibitor in the Reports of the United States Commissioners to the Centennial International Exhibition at Melbourne 1888 p111.<br /> <br /> The Young Bull and Herdsman was acquired by the Melbourne Art Gallery and Museum and was then gifted to the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria where it is today outside the RASV offices in the show grounds.<br /> <br /> Unsigned with a small circular mark roughly at center of drawing and a closed tear through the caption but not affecting the drawing; mounted on an album page. 9 3/4 x 8 1/2" unknown

One panoramic silver gelatin photograph printed on matte finish thick photographic stock sized 8 x 24 in. preserved in the original dark stained wood frame sized 10.25 x 26.5 in. with very faint title inscription in white ink below image in clear cursive hand very minor damage & loss to the very lower right corner of image still VG copy expertly cleaned with new archival backing. This exceedingly scarce original photograph records the site selection inspection by the Lewis & Clark Exposition Board of Directors July 18 1902 the day after the Site Subcommittee had recommended on July 17 1902 that the Board choose City Park for the Exposition site. In fact many different sites were proposed at the meeting including Henry Corbett’s preference for City park while the Ladd interests advocated for a site along Hawthorne Boulevard. Nonetheless the Board adjourned into executive session and as a result of a last minute proposal by Henry Dosch it decided that they would examine the Guild’s Lake site in detail as evidenced by this photograph showing the several board members standing upon the Electric Railway line tracks on the Willamette Heights next to the land proposed for development by the Scottish-American Investment Company. When the Board reconvened after an August hiatus the vote was 6-2 in favor of Guild’s Lake. Robert Livingstone who owned the Scottish-American Investment Company set about with his real estate development partners Russell & Blyth to build a group of Arts & Crafts homes designed by Emil Schacht in the Willamette Heights subdivision which would inspire Portland residential architecture in the decades following the Exposition. Peter Guild 1797-1870 led his family over the Oregon Trail in 1847 lost a herd of cattle to the Oregon Territorial militia during the Cayuse Indian War and eventually homesteaded on Guild’s Lake constructing a large octagon block house which proved to be a very popular Public House and later the site for the 1905 Lewis & Clark Exposition. Conkey writes in the letter for the first volume to Charles Kurtz “I send you herewith a copy of the Catalogue which you may deem to file away as a reminder of many hours spent in order that others might see intelligently the grand work which you with others have done in the Art Department.†Walter Blakesley Conkey had founded the printing house in 1877 occupied many different job printers and in 1890 absorbed the Illinois Printing & Binding Co. and in Jan. 1893 signed the contracts awarding him exclusive rights for printing the myriad of catalogues and handbooks for the Columbian Exposition receiving a deposit of $ 10000. Six individual puzzles individually postcard sized approx. 3.5 x 4.75 in. w/ colour chromolithograph image dissected onto nine wooden pieces each 1 small piece has been supplied in facsimile for upper corner of the Cairo street puzzle. All contained w/in the original deep red paper-covered wooden box raised bed w/in the box to hold the puzzles lid w/ decorative gilt title lettering minor shelfwear very minor rubbing still a VG nearly complete artifact. Very scarce original souvenir puzzle game issued for the fourth great Paris World’s Fair celebrating through pomp and events the Centennial of the French Revolution and the storming of the Bastille. The Exposition was intended to pull France out of a ruinous recession and attracted over 61000 exhibitors as well as 32 million visitors many of whom came to view the iconic Eiffel Tower. This puzzle celebrates several of the pavilions at the Exposition including Palais des Beaux-Arts designed by Joseph Brouvard filled with painting and flanking the Eiffel Tower providing visitors; the Palais de Trocadero held over from the famed 1878 Exposition celebrating the renewal of Paris following the Franco-Prussian War; as well as the Ministere de la Guerre which featured an Arms & Armour exhibition as well as displays of knightly tournaments assorted uniforms and cannon. The Maison Egyptienne and Rue au Caire would fuel the Orientalist movement and fascination with the Middle East among artists writers and the industrial arts well into the 20th Century. These boxed puzzle games were quite popular souvenirs as well as educational tools in the Belle Epoque and have become remarkably scarce. No copies in Worldcat. n.p., unknown
18513220148<p><em>Lithograph strip panorama consisting of four sheets conjoined measuring 12 x 230 cm overall some light dust-soiling in places; folding into publisher's original boards the upper cover with an illustration of a showman in military attire drumming up an audience for a show consisting of a Punch and Judy-style booth with what appear curiously to be marionettes rather than glove-puppets dancing on the stage spine expertly repaired covers slightly marked but nevertheless still a good example.</em></p><p>Rare panorama consisting of 75 captioned vignettes of the people of many nationalities idly wasting time or misbehaving themselves in mostly harmless ways: "A Highland Gentleman practising the Art of Boozing" "John Bull sleeping on the National Debt" "A Hindoo Gentleman enjoying Hookah" "Young Irish Lady doing penance by walking on sharp stones round a well" "A New Zealand Chief polishing the skull of one of his enemies" and so on. It concludes with 'A French Patriot playing Battledoor i.e. battledore & Shuttlecock' the character hitting two crowns and a bonnet-rouge into the air.</p><p>Although unsigned the artist for the work is clearly Benjamin Clayton 1809-1883 what little we know of him comes mainly from his daughter the writer and artist Ellen Creathorne 1834-1900. Benjamin was born in Dublin but moved his family to London in 1841 hoping to be a history painter however his gifts lay instead with illustration firstly producing his own periodicals gChatg and gPunchinello. A journal of wit wisdom and romanceg but later having to work for other publishers first with Ackermann & Co. and later for Dean and Son.</p><p>The publisher George Mann at 39 Cornhill together with Dean & Son issued several panoramas at the time of the Great Exhibition the partnership ending with Mann's death in 1852.</p> Dean & Son, Printers.
