First editions of these promotional items intended to boost ticket sales and regular attendance at the 1939 GGIE which encouraged subscribers to buy “Sponsor’s Season Passes†and “39er Scrip Books†the year before the Fair was held in order to gain a substantial discount. They were available for early buyers at $ 20.00 and $ 5.00 respectively for each package. Although not recognized by the Bureau of International Exhibitions the GGIE organizers were hoping for a banner tourist season in 1939 for San Francisco but the onset of World War II and excessive costs resulted in over $ 4 million in losses the first year even with a court-ordered bankruptcy stay allowing the Fair to run until Sept. 1940 and 17 million visitors it still finished in the red. First edition of this exceedingly scarce original brochure for Peace Projects Inc. led by Berkeley CA Mayor Frank S. Gaines 1890-1977 was as an active proponent for maintaining America’s isolation from World War II as well as supporter of conscientious objectors and heavily involved in trying to address the plight of Japanese-Americans illegally interned by the U.S. during the War.
