Taber 1830-1912 was the official photographer of the Fair and he has captured with vividness the excitement and variety of the events in the Fair with night shots of the Electric Tower piercing the darkness the action in the Forty-Niner Mining Camp which featured “Monarch†the stuffed Grizzly Bear who was showcased in the venue along with logging scenes at Lake Tahoe Hopfields in Ukiah CA the bedraggled Apache confined to the “Arizona Indian Village†along with a portrait of a Chinese Opium Den in San Francisco’s Chinatown. Inscription reads - "Henry S. Cave Compliments of Saml M. Inman Treasurer Atlanta Ga. June 23 1884." H. S. Cave from Atlanta inscription is written on the verso of the frontispiece. Another owners name in pencil on the front paste down "Augusta Wylie King." A later owner's address mailing label located in the upper left corner front paste down. From the New Georgia Encyclopedia:<br /> <br /> Atlanta held its first exposition named the International Cotton Exposition in Oglethorpe Park in 1881. The city then had fewer than 40000 residents and the primary sense in which the first exposition was “international†was the display of cotton plants from around the world. Nevertheless Atlantans were eager to host the 1881 exposition to promote investment and to help the city toward its goal of becoming an industrial center which was a primary component of Grady’s “New South†concept. Although attendance was lower than expected fewer than 200000 in paid attendance during its two-and-a-half-month run city leaders demonstrated that they could work together to host a major event and that Atlanta was serious about its role in textile production at a time when the North was beginning to grow dissatisfied with the efficiency of southern cotton processing. The exposition displayed new crop planters and cotton seed cleaners along with a model of Eli Whitney’s original cotton gin and speakers addressed the crowds about agricultural technology and political reforms. Alphonse Davanne is a most important figure in the early history of photography. Born 1824 in Paris he was a founding member of the Société Française de Photographie the first photographic society in the world and subsequently its vice president and then president. His early collaborations were involved with photolithography and by 1854 he had mastered that process. His next experiments were on developing a direct positive process. Davanne served as the president of the jury for the photographic section of this International Exhibition.<br /> <br /> Largely concerned with the history cameras and equipment and the latest advances in photomechanical processes etc. <br /> <br /> Roosens and Salu No. 3697. One oblong atlas folio hand-coloured lithograph sized 26 x 20.5 in. still retaining fairly wide borders printing above & below centered image w/ hand-coloured border some minor toning & aging from original backing minor tidemark to upper left corner edgewear slight tears very minor predation scuffing to blank right margin still a nice strong image retaining some of the original colouring. First edition variant issue of this scarce birds-eye view of the buildings and sites at the first World’s Fair in the United States celebrating the Centennial. This depicts the trees grass shrubs pedestrians horse-drawn carriages and walking paths with labels below for the Horticultural Hall Main Exhibition Building Memorial Hall Agricultural Hall Ladies Pavilion Machinery Hall and others. These beautiful birds-eye views were presented to subscribers of the “Centennial History†by sales agents who were also sent extra circulars and liberal commissions as indicated in the margins. These were apparently issued in different sizes and formats with the Huntington hand-coloured copy containing all the text including the imprint at the lower fore-edge and both the Huntington and American Antiquarian Society copies have smaller margins. Bourquin 1808-1897 was a Swiss-American pioneering Philadelphia lithographer who specialized in county maps and atlases but also was known for his innovative lithography and by 1876 maintained between 6 and 20 skilled lithographers to produce portraits and prints. First edition of this surprisingly scarce report which served to provide the final history and financial analysis of the 1893 Columbian Worlds Fair. Higinbotham provides numerous tables explaining expenses amount of visitors to the fair specific exhibition costs final disposition of exhibits and much more. Of particular interest is that this copy still retains the original pictorial map Birds-Eye view based upon earlier versions and issued with this report. The pictorial map features a numbered list of attractions listed below which carefully correspond to those depicted in the map such as the “Ferris Wheel†erected by George Washington Gale Ferris Jr. as the centerpiece to the Midway Plaisance. Along with the immense Ferris Wheel which towered over the Exposition there also are images of the Street in Cairo Egyptian Wedding Sudanese villagers Egyptian belly-dancers the Chinese theatre and the Alaskan Kwakiutl Indians together with their totem polls and native dress. Especially valuable for its coverage of early railway technology an area in which the author was himself expert as he had served as a Consulting Engineer for the Great North of Scotland Railway as early as 1853. The book's four divisions - Railways; Textile Machinery; Metal and Wood Manufacturing Machinery; and "Machinery in General" are each profusely illustrated with both text figures and folding plates. A photographic record of a young American man's tour of Europe and the Paris Exposition accompanied by many beautiful street images of Paris.<br /> <br /> The silver gelatin prints of Paris by the unidentified photographer include wonderful images of Notre Dame cathedral the Eiffel Tower the Opera House Toreador Palace the Church of the Madeleine the Champs Esys and the Arc de Triumph. There are many street scenes including the Rue de Rival L'Avenue de loper Place de la Republic monuments and architecture.<br /> <br /> The tour begins in Scotland and includes a departure at the train station wonderful shot of the train and passengers waiting on the platform as well as thatched roof cottages and gardens castles Edinburgh and London. It concludes with images of the main square in Brussels the Belgian country side and Holland including the iconic windmill shot. The final shot is on board ship the photographer with 2 fellow travelers looking very proud of himself.<br /> <br /> The album 8 x 6". Images 3 x 3 1/2" loosely inserted into card stock mounts. After the resounding success of Britain's Great Exhibition of 1851 and the comparative failure of the 1862 London International Exhibition Napoleon decided to surpass their ancient rival. From wikipedia: The Cotton States and International Exposition was a world's fair held in Atlanta Georgia United States in 1895.1 The exposition was designed "to foster trade between southern states and South American nations as well as to show the products and facilities of the region to the rest of the nation and Europe."1 The Cotton States and International Exposition featured exhibits from six states including various innovations in agriculture and technology and exhibits about women and African Americans.1 President Grover Cleveland presided over the opening of the exposition remotely by flipping an electric switch from his house in Massachusetts on September 18 1895.1 The event is best remembered for the "Atlanta Compromise" speech given by Booker T. Seven souvenir albumen cabinet card photos chronicling the third great Paris World’s Fair proclaiming through pomp and events that the Third Republic had rebounded from the Franco-Prussian War and the Commune Revolt. The Exposition was far larger than any previously held occupying over 66 acres featuring an Avenue des Nations elaborate exhibition palaces the completed head of the Statue of Liberty and the first Exposition to feature outdoor electric lighting with massive arc lights. These images include the an updated public aquarium featuring undersea grottoes inspired by Jules Verne stories the Palais de Trocadero the Palais du Champ de Mars statue of the Republic the Galerie du Travail showing stoves weaving machines and more; as well as the statuary in the Grande Galerie Italienne. Etienne Neurdein 1832-after 1915 and his brother Louis Antonin 1840-after 1915 were intrepid traveling photographers throughout French Northern Africa particularly the Sahara and Algeria in the 1870’s and also known for portraiture and monuments photos. They were later awarded the status as official photographers of both 1889 and 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle. Wrappers. <strong>The first 21 pages of the present catalogue contain a notice on Spanish painting. </strong>Don Alejandro María Aguado y Ramírez de Estenoz 1st Marquis de Las Marismas del Guadalquivir Seville June 29 1784 Gijon April 14 1842 Spanish banker was born of Old Christian parentage originally from La Rioja at Seville. He began life as a soldier fighting with distinction in the Spanish War of Independence first against French then on the side of Joseph Bonaparte. After the Battle of Baylen 1808 he entered the French army in which he rose to be colonel and aide-de-camp to Marshal Soult. He was exiled in 1815 and immediately started business as a commission-agent in Paris where chiefly through his family connections in Havana and Mexico he acquired in a few years enough wealth to enable him to undertake banking. The Spanish government gave him full powers to negotiate the loans of 1823 1828 1830 and 1831; and Ferdinand VII. rewarded him with the title of marquis the decorations of several orders and valuable mining concessions in Spain. Aguado also negotiated the Greek loan of 1834. In 1828 having become possessed of large estates in France including the Château Margaux famous for its wine he was naturalized as a French citizen. He died at in Spain on April 14 1842 leaving a fortune 'computed at 60000000 francs and a splendid collection of pictures which at his death was sold by auction.</p>

The Centennial Board of Commissioners awarded the sole license for photography at the exposition just prior to the exhibition to Edward L. Wilson editor of The Philadelphia Photographer who partnered with his good friend William Notman a Scottish-Canadian Photographer as well as Adams of New York and John Fraser. The views included here include the Agricultural Building; Board of Finance Buildings; Machinery Hall interior with the Corliss Engine operating ni the distance; Horticultural Hall along with the Main Entrance and the Exposition grounds. One of the most interesting of the series shows the vast Main Building pavilion under construction with drainage pipes strewn around in the fore-ground while the immense trusses and structural elements slowly march towards the viewer. Most of these images were originally shot by the Centennial Photographic Co. who had proved to be quite successful during the Centennial and the photographers were in great demand through and after the Exhibition which featured over 10 million visitors. Released in a slightly reduced format and licensed out to Underwood & Underwood later Keystone and many others these offered visitors a cut-rate viewing experience. Barker 1844-1894 gained renown originally working for one of Ontario Canada’s leading photographers and later became well-known for his majestic photos of Niagara Falls before a Feb. 1870 destroyed his photo studio although the 800 stereoview negatives were preserved. He later began traveling to shoot views around the United States and released Exposition related images. See: Centennial Photographic Co.
