First edition of this anonymously compiled biographical dictionary including important contemporary sketches of Rossetti Holman Hunt Millais Brown et al. An important and possibly uncommon book. 1859243247Madrid / Paris: Miguel Campo-Redondo / Lamourex 1859. 384p. texts printed on reasonably alkaline stock the complete magazine-year bound in original 11x7 inch black-papered boards and a quarter-calf dark-green spine titled and ruled gilt. All edges tinted aqua-green. El Correo marketed household wisdom exclusively in the Spanish language madly illustrated with selling-point fashion illustrations unwise fashion be it known: "waist not want not" the message. The case-binding is handleable with legible gilt cracked but still-holding hinges original endsheets unmarked except by foxing dust & small stains and a square textblock. It is however very edgeworn with terrific dings to the boards and damage to several plates. However ugly the book-qua-book most of the 20-odd hand-colored fullpage fashion prints are not only beautiful but exceptionally so that is the hand-tinting of them: we have seen perhaps a hundred casebound collections and the ones in this exemplar are amongst the very best in terms of the specialized colorwork that is called for in tinting steel engravings; commonly colors get brushed on too vividly; outlines are breached areas left blank. We count 27 touched-up plates of which 4 or 5 are partial treatments of a single furbelow the rest i.e. the wonderful ones showing usual small groupings of the wasp-waisted. At least twenty are bogglingly sensitive and successful though you will find a few flecks a few small stain-spots and a few seriously torn margins. Not only dresses but faces limbs backgrounds and landscapes are flawlessy touched up. In addition to these main-attraction plates there are numerous monochrome plates lace patterns and such. Complete copy with all faults and virtues. In addition to lovely handwork on costume and wearer the artists here have worked their magic on children animals backgrounds of mountains and buildings and foregrounds of flowers and carpets. We have admired these engraved and frequently hand-tinted fashion fantasies throughout our career most often encountered in British and American magazines Godey's Ladies Book being the most widely distributed. As here with El Correo Godey's and its worthy competitors used French artists engravers and watercolorists. ALL of the 23 are sensitive and successful though you will find a few flecks and a few small stain-spots; FYI one plate at p.336 is a doublespread left untinted its overlap edgeworn has bad staining but you won't throw it away. Includes works by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi and Kawanabe Kiosui and others. Swann tells us "One of the earliest illustrated works on the art of Japanese Ikebana or flower arranging. Conder who served as official architect to the Imperial Japanese Government published a brief paper on the subject in the Transactions of the Asiatic Society of Japan in 1889 prompting this fuller illustrated monograph." Overall condition is very good; sketchbooks with ordinary wear; foxing to just some of the works on watercolor board; a few photographs with edge wear; a large and well-rounded archive fully deserving of proper preservation and study with much to say about the intersections of Victorian landscape art early photography and the working methods and commercial life of husband and wife professional artists. The Stevens were successful artists in Europe and Britain between the later stages of the Victorian era and the early 20th century. They held regular exhibitions of their collaborative landscape studies of the French Riviera Swiss Alps Italian lakes and English countryside. They maintained galleries at Cannes and London and were patronized by European royalty and aristocracy including Tsar Nicholas II and the Empress of Russia. The archive includes a portfolio of 20 watercolor studies and 15 pencil sketches; eight sketchbooks with approximately 100 watercolor or pencil studies; two albums of newspaper exhibition reviews; a file of testimonials documents and letters concerning Russian purchases; printed invitation cards gallery and price references; lists of important patrons; approximately 280 photographs taken by the Stevens mostly silver gelatin prints; and three albumen photographs signed and captioned on the verso "Frank Mason Good." Large 4tos bound in contemporary 3/4 red calf over marbled boards with gilt spines; marbled endpapers; all edges yellow. London: R. Ackermann 1808-1810. <BR><BR>First edition likely bound from the original parts without the half titles as was often the case; the papers are watermarked 1806 & 1807 and containing 11 of Abbey's 12 key plates are in the first "luminescent" state and 12 of the 13 errata points still un-corrected. Offsetting from plates as usual and dedication pages are foxed but otherwise an exceptionally clean and bright copy with very infrequent spotting in margins on a handful of pages.<br/><br/> Rowlandson's first and most famous color-plate book increasingly difficult to obtain in early state as so many copies were broken up to sell the images individually. Ackermann is credited with establishing art lithography in England and this is one of his most interesting and valuable works. "The Microcosm of London is one of the great colour-plate books and a carefully selected copy should form the cornerstone of any collection of books on this subject. The plates present an unrivaled picture of London in the early 19th century of historic value as many of the buildings no longer exist." --Tooley 7. A gorgeous sweeping collection of historic French military costume plates as comprehensive as imaginable spanning 1439 to 1815 or from the Renaissance to Waterloo. Folio 45 by 33.5 cm. 450 hand-colored plates in all. Vol. 1: 100 pp hand-colored plates numbered 1 to115. Vol. 2: 48 pp. Plates numbered 116 to 300. Vol. 3: 58 pp. Plates numbered 1 to 150. The illustrations are generally not static dull costume plates but rather the artist usually shows the soldiers in engaged in some activity and so the illustrations also document the military lifestyle of the day depicted. Many of these plates thus can be viewed as genre or action pictures and their large size contributes to their visual excitement as well. Condition: some light foxing on the text pages. Plate leaves have light age toning along edges but are otherwise very clean fresh bright. Morocco spines with a few minor scuffs and rubbing. Bindings are overall solid and attractive. Note that the set is extremely heavy -- about 37 or 38 lbs. -- and so shipping is bound to cost extra more than the number produced by the standard shipping template on Internet sites. <br /><br /> Clément; E.
