A nice small collection surrounding one of Christo's major international environmental art installations developed between 1984 and 1991. More than 3000 yellow and blue umbrellas were installed respectively in Japan and California. The exhibition closed early amid controversy after a woman was crushed to death when one of the nearly 500-pound umbrellas fell on her during high winds in the Tejon area between Bakersfield and Los Angeles. At the back of the book is a sample of the actual fabric used to wrap the Reichstag. Original publisher's silver cloth author and title on spine; preserved in the original publisher’s slipcase as well as the original shipping box. Number 4317 of 5000 copies signed by Christo Jeanne-Claude and Wolfgang Volz the photographer. This book is a special presentation copy signed to Norm Applebaum and dated April 14 1997. First edition of this complete chronology of the wrapping of the Reichstag in Berlin. The environmental project first conceived of in 1971 was completed in June 1995. The Reichstag was the original home of the Imperial Diet of the German empire opened in 1894. After three rejections Christo and Jeanne-Claude were finally granted permits to wrap the building in 100000 square meters of silver fabric in 1994 and completed the draping of the building the following year. The project suffered numerous setbacks including inclement weather and huge cost increases. The project was finally completed on June 24 and remained open for 14 days.<br /> <br /> Christo described the Reichstag wrapping as autobiographical based on his Bulgarian upbringing. The wrapping became symbolic of unified Germany; the formal unification ceremony was held there in October 1990. The project truly marked Berlin's return as a world city. The process of the entire project documented with Volz’ pragmatic and insightful photographs is detailed throughout this wonderful book. <br /> <br /> Christo who passed away in May of this year at 84 was a Bulgarian-born conceptual artist who turned to epic-scale environmental works around the world. He is best known for wrapping everything from buildings to bridges islands and gates around the world in various types of fabric. Along with his wife Jeanne-Claude who passed away in 2009 they worked with hundreds of people on each project and paid for everything out of their own pocket mostly from the sale of artwork related to a specific project.<br /> <br /> Norm Applebaum who passed away in March of this year 2020 was a celebrated architect winner of the Robert Mosher Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018. Vintage gelatin silver print 8.5 x 11.5 inches with matte finish. German Pop-adjacent artist Charles Wilp generated some of the most avant-garde European advertising from the 1960s cf. Afri-Cola spots on Youtube while also producing artist's vinyl with the likes of Yves Klein. In 1963 he filmed Christo twice—in both Düsseldorf and London—as the latter continued with his Wrapped Women series which had some of its earliest iterations in Klein's Paris apartment. Rather than wrapping cars or oil barrels or architecture Christo here wrapped the nude female body; a practice that soon lead to some of his most stunning jewelry and fashion designs. The present photograph—rather abstract of the model's torso—most likely issues from the Düsseldorf performance of this work. Düsseldorf/London unknown

This is the complete story of Christo’s Umbrella Project including diaries fact sheets and a full overview of the planning and execution of the project.<br /> <br /> The umbrellas were part of an international environmental art project by the husband and wife team of Christo and Jeanne-Claude spanning two continents eight years of planning and costing $26 million. Beginning in December 1990 on both Kern County’s Tejon Ranch and the rice paddies of Ibaraki Japan the team installed a total of over 3000 umbrellas blue ones in Japan and yellow ones in California each standing nearly 20 feet tall. Christo and Jeanne-Claude were a pair of artists who designed coordinated and funded large-scale environmental art installations. Active since the 1960s Reichstag Wrapped in 1995 was one of their crowning achievements. Christo described the piece their physical wrapping in the Reichstag building in a fabric made of aluminum-coated propylene as autobiographical. He related the wrapping to the reunification of Berlin and the importance of that act to Eastern Europeans. INSCRIBED by the artist on the poster in orange crayon: "For Betsy Jones / Christo 1968."<br /> <br /> In early 1968 Christo and Jeanne-Claude proposed to wrap the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and the adjoining sculpture garden to be accompanied by various works inside and outside the museum created by the artists as well. Though it would have been the first of the couple's wrapped public buildings MoMa's insurance company warned that coverage would cease immediately were the artists to begin wrapping the building and thus the project was shelved. MoMA countered by offering the artists this exhibition: a showcase of the preparatory scale models photomontages and drawings created for the project. <br /> <br /> Though Christo and Jeanne-Claude worked collaboratively from 1958 onwards only Christo was given artist credit until 1994 at which point he retroactively attributed the works to her as well. <br /> <br /> 22.5 x 32.5 inches folded on brown butcher paper as issued.
