195376489Barcelona: Edicions Hora 1953. First edition in Catalan Llull's native tongue and the first edition with Campany aquatints. One of XVI special copies. Text printed in Catalan Llull is known for being among the first authors to use his vernacular language Catalan to communicate his ideas. Folio . 175 1 pp. with 11 full page hand-colored etchings drawn engraved and colored by the artist and ten large chapter headings all signed in pencil by the artist. Loose as issued in vellum-backed chemise with gilt spine lettering. Housed in a custom acrylic slipcase. A wonderful copy.This is a Catalan translation of Llull's 1305 although first published in 1512 work entitled Liber de Ascensu et Descensu Intellectus The Book of the Ascent and Descent of the Intellect. Ramon Llull is often thought of as an alchemist of the first order but strictly speaking he was a philosopher/theologian. His magnum opus Ars Magna displays his chief theme; the understanding of eternal truths by way of the intellect. While not himself an alchemist the seekers of the philosopher's stone were very influenced by Llull's ideas. In this book Llull describes the movement of the intellect through the many levels of understanding which some Renaissance alchemists such as Heinrich Khunrath interpreted as analogous to the transmutation process in alchemy. This striking volume was issued in an edition of 165 copies. This copy is one of XVI #VII copies containing an original drawing of one of the plates or of 2 of the vignettes a complete set of the proofs a series of sanguine proofs of the plates and the vignettes and the final proof of all the plates. It is the most desired format. Ramon de Capmany y de Montaner 1899 - 1992 was a Catalan painter engraver and bibliophile. He trained as a painter at the Escuela de la Lonja where he studied under the supervision of Francesc Labarta. He was one of the members of the the Evolutionists and one of the regulars of the Sala Pares. The Evolutionists were an artistic group from Barcelona in the aesthetic sphere of Noucentisme and who rejected programmatic orthodoxy and influenced by Cezanne and the Fauvists developed a personal work constructed and of austere colors. Mainly a landscape painter he mostly painted the surroundings of the Montseny Massif and the old part of the city of Barcelonain a naturalistic style. He also illustrated bibliophile editions such as this one. He held the position of curator in the board of the Ateneo Barcelones during the presidency of Pedro Gual Villalbi between 1952 and 1962. Some of his works can be found in the National Art Museum of Catalonia.One of the proofs of the work apart from the one designated to be signed by the artist is dedicated by Capmany to a Mr. Riera with the following words: ‘Prueba dedicada al Sr. Riera por el artista. Ramon Campmany.’ An original steel etched plate one used in the making of this volume comes with the work. It’s an additional object and no other copies have such a plate. Housed in a fine modern caramel-colored morocco clamshell box with gilt lettering on spine. Inside front wrapper with ink signature of M. R. Skinner; occasional pencil underlining in the text. Howes S-924; Graff 3964; Streeter 3027; Wagner-Camp 244 note. Top inch of spine chipped away a little fraying to edges first three leaves with overall browning minor corner creases but QUITE AN EXCELLENT COPY of a very fragile item clean and fresh internally with the insubstantial binding entirely intact against all odds.<br/> <br/> Based on the author's diaries written between September 1850 and July 1853 this work as the introduction tells us lays out events "just as they happened" being "ludicrous solemn serious tragic inexpressibly sad but always interesting." Kurutz calls the book a "detailed and important account of mining life" and notes that Steele "provided important information on mining techniques and laws while laboring in the Coloma District and on the Yuba and Feather rivers." This account includes some fascinating stories about the many hardships and dangers experienced by the author and his associates including nearly constant fatigue and hunger dreadful weather conditions and dicey encounters with desperados dishonest miners and disgruntled frontier men of commerce. John Steele 1832-1905 was only 18 years old when he left his home in Wisconsin for the gold fields of California. After three and a half years of adventuring he returned to the Midwest where he pursued a career in teaching. Steele also volunteered for the Union army during the Civil War and spent the last 30 years of his life as a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church. The present work was privately printed by the author in a small number of copies and is as expected quite rare on the market now. Besides the present one RBH lists just two other copies sold since 1981 and as of this writing no other dealer seems to be offering one. Furthermore our copy is a remarkably well-preserved survival with its delicate wrappers and text in condition as attractive as one could hope to find. J. Steele unknown

Publisher's 3/4 blue roan leather over marbled boards gilt spine lettering. Front endpaper with strange discoloring and a bit of rubbing to leather but overall a very good copy with a fine inscription by the author.Inscribed by the author son of Pierre Barlow Cornwall. "To my warm friend Milton Eisner Bruce Cornwall." Milton Daniel Eisner was born in San Francisco on July 15 1886. His father Milton S. Eisner was a prominent San Francisco attorney his mother Lena Reinstein Eisner was a member of a prominent San Francisco family her brother Jacob B. Reinstein having served as a Regent of the University of California at the turn of the century. Both of Eisner's parents were native Californians.P. B. Cornwall was an adventurous fellow. In April of 1848 he set out from St. Joe to California. "The narrative records the encounter with the Mormons four thousand strong under Brigham Young at Council Bluffs following the expulsion from Nauvoo; the capture of Cornwall and his companions by Indians; their final escape and arrival at Fort Laramie" Eberstadt 114. They eventually made it across the Rockies but lost their guide Fallon to Native American depredations. Using Fremont's map they crossed the desert and the Sierra Nevada Mountains and arrived in California. Upon their arrival they were $8000 in debt but by the end of their first year had acquired $500000. Pierre Cornwall went on to lead a very active political life in early California. "The Black Diamond Coal Mining Company the Uellingham Bay and British Columbia Railroad the California Electric Light Company and the Mutual Electric Light Company were organized or promoted by him. He had a wide grasp on commercial problems and remarkable foresight and his ventures . were correspondingly satisfactory. Active in business Mr. Cornwall found time for attending to other interests. Never seeking office for himself he was a hard worker for the success of Republicanism in California. He was chairman of the Republican State Central Committee. He was the last surviving member of the first California Legislature and also of the first California constitutional convention. First edition of this scarce mining sales promotion from the Woods Investment Company which sponsored a booth in the Mining Building at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo NY in order to raise funds and expand the Woods mining and business empire. At the time the Woods operated the Gold Coin Mine employing 300 men with an annual payroll of $ 350000 as well as the Consolidated Doctor-Jack Pot New Zealand Mabel M. Damon Morning Glory and others. The Woods founded Victor CO and while digging the foundations for their elaborate Victor Hotel they discovered in 1894 a twenty-inch-wide vein of gold ore and began the development of the famed Gold Coin Mine. After rebuilding following the 1899 Victor CO fire the company continued to expand and rebuilt most of the burned-out business district in fire-resistant brick and stone. This work includes photo illustrations of Victor CO Cameron CO the Robinson-Victor Mine the Economic Gold Extraction Co. the Pike’s Peak power station and the Cripple Creek Short Line. The Woods were progressive mine owners who invested back into their community including the Gold Coin Club for Woods miners and workers which included a ballroom gymnasium baths bowling lanes tennis courts billiards room library and dining rooms. Unfortunately the Pan-American Exposition is best remembered as the site of the assassination of President McKinley shot by the anarchist Leon Czolgosz at the Temple of Music Sept. 6 1901.
