17903249Dumbarton Scotland 1790. Good. Folio half-sheet 1 p. 20 lines name of the recipient on verso 2 vertical and 4 horizontal folds evidence of wax seal on verso old tape repair at top margin not affecting text ink gall corrosion on outer margin affecting one word. Preserved in mylar sleeve. An extremely curious provincial Scottish letter dated 1790 which incorporates misspellings based on non-standard sociolects of the Scottish dialect. While "worthless" relics such as this were almost invariably discarded they remain of the great interest in Ortheopy the study of pronunciation. Indeed much of what is known about Vulgar Latin pronunciation is preserved in graffiti in the ruins of Pompei. <br/><br/>Concerning the content of the letter: William Steuart or Stewart writes to John Adam Esq. describing water damage to four rooms in Dumbarton Castle: two were newly painted the other two newly wall-papered. An associate suggested that he procure a carpenter in Inversnaid to the amount of GBP 35 and therefore "if you have any masonwork to do I can do it at the time."<br/><br/>The letter is signed by Steuart but was clearly dictated by him to an unnamed scribe. Our transcription of the letter retains the original spelling:<br/><br/>"Dumbarton May 24th 1790. Dear Sir<br/>I received both your letters one of the 10th & the other of the 13th curant & have noted the contents. I told Capt. Roberson what work was to be don sic at the Castle hear sic this year when he simed i.e. seemed much surprised that his hous sic was not rough cast. Ther sic is 2 rooms neu sic painted & other two neu sic pappred sic which will be quite spiled i.e. spoiled with the watter sic comin through the wall & he has wrot i.e. wrote to Campt. Rudyard about it. Last neight sic I had a letter from Mr. Young beiging i.e. begging of me to go to Inversnaid to gat sic som sic Carpenter work don sic ther sic to the amount of GBP 35 so if you have any masson sic work to do I can do it at the time. I am Dear Sir your very humbel sic Serv't" shaky signature of William Steuart. <br/><br/>Questions remain: Why go to Inversnaid to procure a carpenter This extremely tiny village was located 30 miles away from Dumbarton Castle while Glasgow was only 13 miles away. This Compendium of Roman History by Velleius is an early edition of Dutch classical scholar Pieter Burman the elder. His history written in a rhetorical style covered the period from the end of the Trojan War to the death of Livia in 29 A.D. and most useful for the period from the death of Julius Caesar in 44 B.C. to the death of Augustus in 14 A.D. Bryan Michael. Bryan’s Dictionary of Painters and Engravers Volume 1. G. Bell 1903. p. 145. "Velleius Paterculus’ short work is the earliest surviving attempt on the part of a post-Augustan historian to survey the history of the res publica from its origins to his own times. In a period from which no other contemporary historical narrative survives in more than meagre fragments Velleius’ work is uniquely important. It is a critical counter to the later accounts of Tacitus Suetonius and Cassius Dio not simply because it offers a different view of Tiberius but because Velleius saw continuity where later authors saw only radical change which destroyed the Republic and put monarchy in its place. Janus Broukhusius or Jan van Broehuizen 1649-1707 was an influential classical scholar and poet whose editions of Propertius and Catullus were long influential. Many 19th and early 20th century editions of Propertius drew heavily on him including Pieter Burmann The Younger's 1780 edition completed by Van Sanlen. Brunet speaks well of the scholarship of Broekhuizen's edition Brunet III p.847; Schweiger II p.830-3. Square quarto. Cover measures 22.4 x 17.7 cm 8¾ x 7"; leaves = 21.5 x 16.4 cm. Typographic title page in black and red; second title page engraved by Mulder signed in the plate. Errata list on p.28. Pagination: 28 423 1 100 pp. Foliation: - 3 in fours 4in two A-3T in fours 3V in two. Textblock trimmed no loss. Full vellum binding possibly original certainly early with two binders blanks. Covers have blind-stamped rules and gilt lozenges. The spine is ink lettered. Slits for ribbon ties present but the ties are now departed. Fifteen possibly more pages have scholarly notes in Latin in an early hand. Very clean copy with virtually no foxing and what is there is very light and unobtrusive. The subtitle tells the contents: "Obra en que se muestra al confessor nuevo la practica de administrar con fruto el Sacramento de la penitencia." The work is a translation from the Italian of Fr. Segneri by Juan de Espinola Baeza de Echaburu but in actual fact according to Palau 305883/ 305885 this is a pseudonym for Fr. Jose Lopez de Echaburu SJ. Judging from the number of reprints it must have been a popular manual for priests to instruct them in this rite. Second edition issued earlier in 1693. This edition printed at the Sheldonian Theatre of Paterculus’ Roman history contains the addition of 44 pages of additional notes. It contains not all copies do Dodwell’s Annales Velleiani. Lowndes vol. 4 p. 1798. "His Compendium of Roman History consists of two books dedicated to M. Vinicius and covers the period from the dispersion of the Greeks after the siege of Troy down to the death of Livia AD 29. The first book brings the history down to the destruction of Carthage in 146 BC; portions of it are missing including the beginning. The later history especially the period from the death of Julius Caesar 44 BC to the death of Augustus AD 14 is treated in much greater detail. / The author does not display real historical insight although generally trustworthy in his statements of individual facts. He may be regarded as something of a courtly annalist rather than an historian. His chronology is inconsistent though sometimes useful. On Caesar Augustus and above all on his patron Tiberius he lavishes praise or flattery; but his portrait of the latter is a useful corrective to the sensationalist attacks of a Tacitus as is his treatment of Livia. The repetitions redundancies and slovenliness of expression may be partly due to the haste with which as the author frequently states it was written. The inflated rhetoric the straining after effect by means of hyperbole antithesis and epigram belong firmly to the Silver Age of which Paterculus is the earliest example. He purposed to write a fuller history of the later period including the civil war between Caesar and Pompey and the wars of Tiberius; but there is no evidence that he did so. These are printed in red & black have the tax stamps on the margins of the title pages and are of 32 pages' length with exceptions or notes as below: 1782: On page 31 the section "VI Rebus by Mr. R. Richardson of Frosterly" has been solved with the manuscript letters & names of clues neatly written at the margins. 1786: pgs 1-2 15-32; However another issue is bound after this incomplete issue that is entire in 48 pages. These almanacs are noted on the title pages as printed for the Company of Stationers; and this "extra" issue is noted on the title page as "Printed for T. Carnan in St. Paul's Church Yard; who after an expensive Suit in Law and Equity by the unanimous Opinion of the Judges of the Court of Common Please dispossessed the Stationers' Company of their pretended exclusive Privilege of Printing Almanacks which they had usurped for two Centuries; a convincing Proof that no unjust Monopoly will ever stand the Test of an English Court of Justice." 1788: pgs 1-2 15-32 only. 1793 Misbound pages out of order and complete 32 pages. 1795: A name of "Old Batholomew" has been added in ms. at the 4th Sept. in the monthly almanac pages section. 1797 pgs 1-16 only. It was translated into German and considered the standard for years. It contains a study of the civil government of Athens the religion of Greece; the military affairs of the Grecians.
