Hardback full speckled calf raised bands with gilt-blocked title and decoration to spine. Quarto/4to measures around 7 7/8" x 10" x 1 5/8" xxiv 486 pp and two-page list of corrigenda. Extensive scuffing and wear to binding with some loss to leather at head and tail of spine a little to top of hinge corners of boards and more so to lower fore-edge of front board. Title label also missing although gilt title lettering itself can still partially be seen. Rubbing at edges and on hinges. Some cracking to outer hinges and extensively to inner hinges whereby daylight can be seen through them but boards are still attached. Otherwise reasonably firm. Bumped and torn corners. Speckled page edges which are browned scuffed and otherwise marked especially to upper and lower edges. A little puckering tearing and staining to pastedowns and endpapers with marking. Heavy marking to title page and previous owner inscription to top in ink with name of author written in pencil towards bottom. The odd dog-eared page corner. A little marking to page surfaces throughout but generally reasonably clean no underlining marginalia etc. A scarce first edition copy of one of the earliest calculus textbooks and a work of some significance in the field. A priest of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri father Reyneau was successively professor of philosophy at Toulon and Pézenas and then of mathematics at the college of Angers. Late 19th cent. 3/4 morocco binding with marbled boards. corners and hinges a bit rubbed.</p><p>Describes 200 paintings from the collection of Jacques Bergeon arranged by artist. Each painting has a short description and for each artist a short biography is given. Bergeon was a lawyer and banker in The Hague and the owner of 'Brittenrust' a country house in Alphen aan de Rijn. He continued collecting after this catalogue was printed but due to financial problems his collection was sold on 4 November 1789. Pages 61-68 contains the index with the names of the painters. We find paintings by Hendrik Avercamp Adriaan van Ostade Paulus Potter Petrus Paulus Rubens Jan Steen David Teniers the younger and many others among them a few women painters: Anna Barbara van Esch Catharina van der Meer. No. 112 is a painting by Louis de Moni Een kantwerkster met een bellenblazende jongen now in Mauritshuis.</p>

All plates are printed one side only and in the first two parts of the 1706 book each has a large rectangular picture with a heading above and 3 lines of text below. The lower half having 3 line of text above the emblematic illustrations which usually consisted of an elaborate circular frame often with smaller roundelles within the frame including some captions or text and with a central illustration. This additional Title has a similar format of large rectangular illustration under a title but the lines below are in six line paired couplets and the emblematic pictures in the bottom half are of more varied shapes such as octagonals two-part pictues free flying figures and some rather larger engravings. All of these elements are printed from one large copperplate of 28 x 17cm. There are 7 tears without loss including 2 with old repair leaving slight discolouration. None of the tears touch any printed matter all but 1 are in the marginwith the one in the plate area but not into any illustrated part. There is some finger soiling mainly to the lower corner minor foxing and one small hole due small ink spot having eaten a .5cm hole in the paper with the page before and after having a small residual stain from this but it is very near to the edge of the picture so is hardly noticeable. Previous owner's stamp to blank endpaper at front and rearsame to corner of first half title no other markings. The 2nd edition of the Augen- & Gemueths-Lust was printed in 8vo. Illustrations by Bewick were added to the second and subsequent editions of which there were many including four in America in Philadelphia Wilmington and New York. The author is given on the title page as 'by the editor of the Looking Glass for the Mind' which was printed by Newbery in 1787 and which was actually by the French children's writer Arnaud Berquin. It was translated by 'J. Cooper' one of the many pseudonyms of Richard Johnson.</p><p>In his preface the editor praises Berquin and other foreign writers whose books for the juvenile market 'merit the highest encomiums' and who have humbled themselves to deal in 'the plain language of youth in order to teach them wisdom virtue and morality'. Plates most often have two copper engraved illustrations each approximately half the page but a good number of plates two or more smaller vignettes in lieu of a larger rectangular illustration in the bottom half of the page. There are also an abundance of title pages -- these are included in the pagination -- with two title pages per section each with a frontis and also a title for the work overall. Well over 300 separate illustrations. Printing on only one side of each leaf. Condition: rubbing along joints and some other scratches and wear to straight grained morocco. With an engraved frontispiece a small engraved illustration by Noach van der Meer II on both title-pages 4 folding engraved plates of the old theatre; 5 folding engraved plates of the new theatre all engraved by the publishers after designs by Van der Meer and 1 by Simon Fokke. 2 works in 1 volume. Large-paper copies of the first editions of two works on the schouwburg theatre of Amsterdam the first on the old theatre which burned down in 1772 and the second on the new theatre which was built on the Leidseplein and finished in 1775. The large engraved plates show the exterior of the new theatre together with the surrounding buildings and with people on the foreground and the interior of both the theatres the balconies and stages. Two plates depict the old theatre going up in flames and another plate shows the ruins. The text gives a history of both the theatres including a description of the building process the restorations and renovations the staff the stage equipment lightning decor hoist tools costumes etc. and also including a vivid description of the fire. The first work is often ascribed to Jan Fokke but both works are also frequently ascribed to Myndert de Boer who wrote the long poems in both works.With bookplates. Binding rubbed along the extremities slightly worn at the head and foot of the spine. 17630001650<p>On offer is a pre-Revolutionary plantation rental agreement between a Philadelphia shopkeeper and a Springfield millwright featuring notes that connect multiple family and business ties in late 18th-century Philadelphia and Chester counties.</p><p>The rental memorandum is the work of Philadelphia-based lawyer Paul Isaac Voto whose office was located at <em>"the corner of Black Horse Alley in Second Street." </em></p><p>The agreement was drafted between Mr. John Gailbreath often spelled Galbreath or Gilbreath in other historical documentation c. 1717–1766 a shopkeeper whose store was located <em>"in Second Street between Market and Chestnut streets" </em>and the prospective renter millwright Richard Hall of Springfield Chester County. Historical documents show that Hall also owned property in the region.</p><p>Dated May 1763 the rental memorandum indicates that John Gailbreath <em>".letts his house and plantation in Springfield… for one year from the date hereof to… Richard Hall paying the rent of twenty seven pounds…"</em></p><p>The agreement lays out several rules of tenancy including the following examples:</p><ul><li><p><em>"The Tenant is to have Liberty to reap his Corn and Thrash it in the Barn after the time is over leaving the Thaw and Chatt…"</em></p></li><li><p><em>".the Tenant agrees not to take any Hay Straw or Dung off the Premises…"</em></p></li><li><p><em>".the Tenant agrees to… keep the House… and Premises in repair as good as now… shall not keep more fires in the House but only one in the kitchen and one in another room and… not to cut any timber or wood But in the Back Field joining to Crosiers Croziers Plantation…"</em></p></li></ul><p>A caveat on the verso of the lease agreement states that <em>".If John McCoy do not think it proper to rent the place it shall be lett to James Cochran John Cairnes son in law at 26 pounds…" </em>According to historical news documents Galbreath was traveling in 1763 and appears to have entrusted a Chester County contact with the final decision on the rental in his absence.</p><p>The document is signed by Hall but not Galbreath. Its delivery was witnessed by Paul Isaac Voto and Elyha Taylor and the original seal is present.</p><p>This document provides not only insight into property rights legal agreements and plantation rentals in pre-Revolutionary Pennsylvania but it also offers genealogical data to support research on the still-incomplete history of early Pennsylvania families. These include the Cairnes Voto Hall Cochran and Crozier or Crosier families among others.</p><p>While some 18th-century newspaper data exists digitally to assist with ongoing research these being the sources used to find the location of the subjects' businesses this document remains an invaluable primary source for those interested in 18th-century life movement and genealogical links.</p><p><strong>Condition:</strong> Significant age toning folding and micro-tears with significant tearing in one corner. The document is written in ink with a clear legible hand and remains in good condition for its age. Overall: Fair to Good.</p>

He was a fellow of the Royal Society and a member of several European academies of science. . He wrote more about scientific instruments than about any other subject" D.S.B. This book is the first edition of "an important milestone in the early literature of gas analysis. . an account of his researches on gases addressed to his friend Joseph Priestley. The glass apparatus for impregnating water with fixed air carbon dioxide is described in detail. Newly improved by 'Mr. Parker' the apparatus was superior to that used by Priestley and described by him in 1772. Carbon dioxide was prepared by dissolving marble calcium carbonate in dilute sulphuric acid. Luyken. 2 parts in one volume. 8 320; 196 20 pp. Rare 3rd edition of the Dutch translation of a popular work on medicinal herbs plants minerals etc. with recipes. It starts with the Theatrum sympateticum divided into two parts by the English diplomat and philosopher Kenelm Digby 1603-1665. The first contains notes on medicinal herbs and plants curing everyday ailments the second explains how to make the "powder of sympathy" "a potion which allowed the healing of the wound by treating the weapon which caused it" MacDonald and includes extracts from works by Papinius and Sylvester Rattrat. The powder of sympathy could also be put on a bandage that had been in contact with the wound without ever touching the wound. Digbys work is followed by 't Groote licht der natuurkunde by Athanasius Kircher 1602-1680 a work on magnetic forces and the influence of the moon sun and planets on the earth. The book closes with extracts from Digby's memoirs containing recipes for "new" medicines including mostly household and cosmetic recipes like face powder for women and water to whiten teeth. The first Dutch edition was published in 1681.With bookplate of Kenneth Garth Huston 1926-1987 physician book collector and bibliographer of Digby on the front paste-down. FINE. An extensive work on the morphology of boned fish cartilaginous fish sharks rays skates and cetaceans. This work is illustrated with forty-seven full-page engraved plates that are executed in superb form. Plate XLII shows a beached baleen whale and its enormous size compared to the men in the engraving. A bit fanciful plate XL shows a pair of Mermen; a fish on plate XXVII has the features of a human face whilst a 'shark' on plate VII has semi-human fore-limbs. Except for these anomalies the zoological drawings are quite dramatic and relatively accurate. Jonston's works were frequently re-edited and translated into German Latin Dutch and English. Born in Poland but of Scottish origin Jonston was educated and traveled extensively. He attended St. Andrews 1623-5 studying botany and medicine at Cambridge Leiden and Frankfurt Universities. He earned degrees from Cambridge and in Leiden his M. D. in 1632 where he later practiced medicine and gained a great reputation. In 1642 he briefly taught at Frankfurt as professor of medicine. He retired to his private estate in Silesia in 1655. His "four dictionary-style works on fish birds quadrupeds and insects -- published between 1650 and 1653 with excellent illustrations -- were widely read and translated." DSB. A fine Folk Art manuscript prayer book from the late eighteenth century. 8vo. 17.5 by 10.5 cm. 3 516 13 1 pp. With eight full page paintings plus vignette decoration throughout. Besides the ubiquitous floral ornamentation all pretty accents the vignettes include a serpent a basilisk a skull etc. Most writing is a neat now archaic cursive but headings and the like rendered in an easily readable ornamental Fraktur Gothic. The paintings are the highlight most will find. Their subject matter is quintessential -- Momento Mori Saint Michael slaying the dragon Saint John in the desert Saint Sebastien the Christ child King David playing a harp etc. But while the subject matter may not be unusual the execution is done with uncommon flair even though it is resolutely naive or Folk Art. And the artist who we assume is one or both of the writers may be illustrating popular subjects there are original elements in his/her imagery or imagining of the subject. The authorship is stated but also a tad confusing. Our interpretation is that a Konrad Mueller created the book for Margaretha Pfaden-Hauerin. Condition: moderate wear to contemporary full calf binding. Unusual is a 13 page "Register" or Table of Contents in the rear. By unusual we mean for such a manuscript prayer book. Also a page of handwritten genealogical notes written on a prior blank leaf and written much later in the mid to late 19th Century. Moderate sometimes heavy soiling to margins of leaves. Three works bound together quarto the first main work with folding map 2 plates and an engraved portrait vignette with two shorter pamphlets 24 & 26 pp.; an attractive copy in contemporary patterned vellum boards spine banded red morocco spine label faded. <p><p>Three works by Paulinus including his important India Orientalis Christiana a study of and introduction to the Carmelite missions in India in the late eighteenth century in a particularly attractive contemporary binding. The work is illustrated with two plates and a fine map of India as well as a smaller vignette portrait of Paulinus himself. Paulinus of St Bartholomew 1748-1806 also known as Johann Philipp Werdin or Wesdin was a missionary and orientalist. A member of the Carmelite Order in 1774 he was sent to India Malabar where he was appointed vicar general of his order. In 1789 he was recalled to Rome in order to report on the mission and given the task of preparing books for the use of missionaries.</p> <p>One of the first Orientalists to note and work on the close relationship between Indian and European languages Paulinus was the author of many learned studies on the east and is best known for having published the first Sanskrit grammar. As an antiquarian who worked from original sources he was fortunate to have the patronage of Cardinal Stefano Borgia 1731-1804; a good Borgia whom he served as private secretary and who financed many of his publications. Both men served long periods on the Congregatio de Propaganda Fide a body preoccupied with exotic languages insofar as they impacted on spreading the christian gospels but also in understanding exotic theologies. In this context the Propaganda Fide was a central recipient of missionary collecting in the field which gave Paulinus exceptional advantages which enabled him to undertake extensive linguistic studies.</p> <p>After Borgia's death his remarkable library and museum were gradually distributed with the important biblical manuscripts mostly being added to the Vatican libraries after the secular materials had chiefly made their way to the national library of Naples.</p> <p>The two rare pamphlets bound in here are both concerned with Borgia's museum: Scitismo Sviluppato. del Museo Borgiano Rome c. 1793 and Lettera. del Museo Borgiano Rome same period both written in Italian not Latin and both discussing the Museo Borgiano. Borgia was particularly expert on Coptic relics but here Paulinus discusses early Brahmanic and other Indian manuscripts in his collection.</p> <p>All of these works are rare although as often the pamphlets are the scarcer. Worldcat lists some 10 copies of the India Orientalis Christiana 2 copies of the Scitismo and only 1 of the Lettera.</p> </p> . Typis Salomonianis unknown

Second or third edition of the funeral oration for the sinologist and mathematician Claude de Visdelou 1656-1737 by Father Norbert of Bar-le-Duc 1703-1769 dedicated to Pope Benedict XIV. The oration prooved highly important in the so-called Struggle of the rites in China between the Jesuit missionaries and the Chinese emperor and the Pope.The author of the oration Norbert de Bar-le-Duc a Capuchin monk 1716 and priest 1729 also known as Norbert de Lorraine Curé Pierre Parisot or Abbé Platel was sent to Malabar and later to Pondicherry in December 1736 after being appointed procurator of the French mission. He stayed for three years in Pondicherry where he soon came into conflict with the Jesuits on the same issue - the struggle of the now Malabaric rites -which had lead to Visdelous exile in the same Capuchin monastery in the same town. So the anti-Jesuit Father Norbert de Bar-le-Duc understandably delivered Visdelous funeral oration .An undated 4to edition that names no printer or place of printing appears to be the first edition of the funeral oration. Sommervogel and Cordier mention an 8vo edition nominally printed by Antoine Pereira in Cadiz though other sources suggest it was printed in Avignon with the same collation as our edition and published in the same year making the present edition the second or third.Fine copy with bookplate on inside front cover: ''Devie Prêtre''. He studied under Colson painter of the Academy of Saint Luc and devoted himself first to the art of wood-engraving; he afterwards as an engraver on steel rendered himself famous in all countries. In some of his works he seeks to prove that Gutenberg is not the inventor of printing and maintains that long before Gutenberg engraving on wood had been employed for printing images and inscriptions; that during his residence in Strasburg Gutenberg attempted the application of this art to the printing of books and that on his return to Mayence he first printed the Donatus and the Catholicon of Johannes de Janua with engraved and solid blocks. With an etched frontispiece an etching of a mermaid on the title 2 folding etchings 2 full-page etchings and 21 etchings in the text all after Adriaen van Ostade. Further with musical annotation to all songs. First edition of a rare Dutch songbook with songs for farmer's festivals all with musical annotation. The work has been beautifully illustrated with etchings after the famous Dutch painter of country life Adriaen van Ostade 1610-1685. The fine etchings newly made and in reverse present an exemplary survey of Van Ostade's work showing busts of peasants women on their way to the market carrying baskets farmers smoking merry parties dancing in front of the farm a knife-grinder a schoolmaster etc. Together they give a lively impression of country life.The work was published anonymously but has been attributed to either Jan van Gijsen 1668-1722 or Aäron van Hulkenroy 1687-1733. Van Gijsen was a popular author who wrote a large number of occasional poems. His collected works were published at Amsterdam in three volumes in 1707-1711 but the present selection was probably published only once partly with the address of the Widow of Van Hulkenroy and partly with the address of J. van Egmont who had also published the collected works. Aäron van Hulkenroy was the son of publisher Hermanus van Hulkenroy and took over the publishing company after both his parents had passed. He was also a poet who wrote various poetry collections which were always published by his mother or later himself. The present work has been attributed to him because the very first poem on the verso of the half title is signed with his initials.The boards and spine are rubbed with some loss of material at the lower outer corner of the front board.
