The dust jacket has several edge tears nicks and wrinkled spots mostly to the spine ends and some small edge chips missing. This book written by Henry Pu Yi and edited by Paul Kramer was the basis for the movie The Last Emperor and tells the story of the boy who became emperor of China at age 2 or 3 when using Chinese dating lived for nearly twenty years in the Forbidden City before being expelled and imprisoned by the Soviets and Red Chinese. "The Xuantong Emperor 7 February 1906 – 17 October 1967 better known by his personal name Puyi was the last emperor of China as the eleventh and final monarch of the Qing dynasty. He was later ruler of the puppet state of Manchukuo under the Empire of Japan from 1934 to 1945. He became emperor at the age of two in 1908 but was forced to abdicate at the age of six in 1912 during the Xinhai Revolution. His era name as Qing emperor Xuantong means "proclamation of unity". Puyi was briefly restored to the throne as Qing emperor by the loyalist General Zhang Xun from 1 July to 12 July 1917. He was first wed to Empress Wanrong in 1922 in an arranged marriage. In 1924 he was expelled from the Forbidden City and found refuge in Tianjin where he began to court both the warlords fighting for hegemony over China and the Japanese who had long desired control of China. In 1932 after the Japanese invasion of Manchuria the puppet state of Manchukuo was established by Japan and he was chosen to become the chief executive of the new state using the era name of "Datong". Good. 11 x 8.5 inches softcover good with toning wear and stains to covers some pencil notes to covers ink note on p. 14 and a rectangle of one of the unnumbered pages at the end has been clipped out. 48 6 pp illustrated mostly in b/w with a few plates in color. Sculpture and decorative arts some with neo-oriental designs and "chinoiserie" effects. Not dated but all indications are this was from the mid-1970s. The father and son team of Philip 1907-1987 and Kelvin 1937- LaVerne created custom limited edition pieces of furniture that were both functional objects and stunning displays of artistry. Their distinctive sculpted bronze pieces harmoniously combine innovative metalworking techniques with traditional motifs. Motifs were drawn from history discovered by many trips to the library. Chinese scenes adorn some of their most popular cabinets and tables particularly from the Chan series. There were several decorative themes in the popular Chinese series such as Tao Chi Liang Ming T'ang Sui Shang Ti and Su Tao. They all blended well with the oriental style then so popular in decorating. Most came in limited editions of 12 but due to demand they made many more for the Chan series. Philip called their pieces "functional art" a concept he did not invent but that the LaVernes certainly did bring early to a wider audience through their gallery/showroom at 46 East 57th and an aggressive advertising campaign. Good. 3 volumes of 4 original cloth good set with minor wear and soil evidence that a bookplate has been removed from each volume otherwise good clean set very rare. The author lived from 1859-1924 and spent almost his entire life in Moscow: he was the state rabbi for Moscow by 1893 and formed a number of Russian Zionist associations to further the cause of Russian Jews. The Bolsheviks had no use for him and after the Revolution he barely escaped arrest after a 1920 Zionist conference in Moscow. Eventually the new government established the Evsektsiia the Jewish Section of the Communist Party but made Yiddish the official language instead of Hebrew against the public objections of Maseh and others.
