Very Good. <br /> <br /> Ernest George Ahl age 19 born in Sweden and residing at 214 No. 4 St. Victor lists his occupation as trammer and claims eleven months' experience at Stratton's Independence Mine. He recites that he has never been a member of the Western Federation of Miners or a member of any labor organization. He states that he is "in sympathy with the objects and purposes of the Miners' Protective Association. . . and will abide by and observe the Constitution and By-Laws as may be prescribed by its Executive Committee." He signs the document. On the verso are additional notes regarding his application. <br /> The Stratton Independence Mine & Mill was located in the Cripple Creek Mining District in Victor Colorado on the south slope of Battle Mountain. Named after Winfield Scott Stratton who discovered the mine on July 4 1891 it was site of the first major strike in the Cripple Creek/Victor area. The disputes led to the formation of the Western Federation of Miners in 1893. Tensions between management and workers escalated into the Colorado Labor Wars of 1903. The Miners' Protective Association formed in Virginia City in May 1863 opposed pending wage cuts and created a benefit fund for sick and injured miners and their families. By 1912 it had established an office in Cripple Creek which was made up of both employers and employees. Mining American Volume 65 1912 p.197. <br /> Ernest George Ahl was born in Malmere Shana Sweden on June 28 1896 and died in San Diego California on June 21 1923. Not much is known about him; Swedish emigration records show him leaving for New York on June 11 1914. His Declaration of Naturalization occurred March 1917 at San Diego California; he registered for the World War I draft on June 8 1917 and listed his employer at the time as Portland Gold Mining Company; he is listed in the Roster of Men and Women Who Served in The World War From Colorado 1917-1918 Teller County as a private in the Infantry. unknown

Rear board carries label stating "The Owner of this Card is entitled to admisssion to the Trades Hall Club at all Times and on payment of 6d. may have a Membership Card issued to him." Includes for example the following: Bye Laws of the Transvaal Miners' Association / Branch Lodge Rules / Executive Committee and Contributions details etc. Membership due stamps for 1912 present. The names of the senior officials trustees and exective member are listed on the back pastedown. Front pastedown carries details of the owner of this card. Member's Name listed as E. Morgan. The WFM union miners Local 131 of Pony MT entered monthly figures on its membership income and expenses and other information for filing with the WFM. The Committee of Council gave due consideration to the Report of the Attorney General and recommended that a Commission be issued to appoint Dr. James Milton Hamm to investigate all matters related to health and savety involved in the working conditions and working environment of mines in Ontario. This report is increasingly scarce. Mining accidents continue to occur in the United States China and elsewhere around the world. There is enduring value in this Royal Commission report. 19163385Cripple Creek and Denver Co 1916. Very good. Eight partially-printed forms completed in manuscript. Minor wear and soiling. A collection of seven applications for membership in the Miners' Protective Association and one application for the Western Federation of Miners all filled out by prospective members in the early 20th century. The applicants range in age from 23 to 59 and were born in a wide variety of locations including several midwestern states Canada and England. They report varying levels of mining experience from four to forty years with one applicant reporting no experience having worked previously as a rancher. None of the men were members of any other labor organization at the time of their applications. Interestingly the Miners' Protective Association and the Western Federation of Miners worked at cross purposes from each other. The former was a cooperative association formed by mining companies in order to discourage the unionizing of workers; the Western Federation of Miners was a notable labor union that had previously participated in widely-reported and violent strikes in Cripple Creek in 1894 and 1903.<br /> <br /> The forms themselves echo the competing motivations of the two groups. The application for the MPA asks applicants if they are or ever have been members of the Western Federation of Miners or any other labor organization. The Western Federation of Miners' application asks applicants if they have ever taken the place of strikers been a scab or assisted law enforcement or the Pinkerton Agency with opposing organized labor. An additional point of interest on the Western Federation of Miners application is the implication that the applicant is African American. The applicant William Judson reports his complexion as "Dark." People of color working as miners was rare in the west though certainly not unheard of. unknown
