Large works all approx. 19" x 12"; smaller 12.5" x 9". With a large 17" x 12" spiral-bound artist's notebook containing eight additional color studies plus one sketch. Also includes 18 other loose preliminary works various sizes and media - including one brief series of Shakespearean costume design. Most SIGNED by the artist. Generally very good or better overall. <br/><br/>Lovely selection of original fashion art depicting various women's runway dresses all ca. 1955. We have been unable to discover much about the artist Mr. Leigh. But he was clearly an accomplished designer colorist and draftsman. We do know he was based in New York City and assume given the professional skill with which these works were executed that he likely worked in the industry either for a designer or a fashion magazine. The portraits themselves are quintessentially post-war in their style and taste clearly indebted to VOGUE and their artists. A beautiful primary collection of 1950s high fashion. unknown books

Group of 10 original costume studies on heavy cardstock mounts ranging in size from about 9.5-by-10.5 inches to 13-by-18 inches in pen-and-ink or grey wash heightened in white. Circa 1930s America. Presumably created by S. C. Cavanagh Ltd. with the firm's name in pencil along the bottom edge of many of the studies. Expertly carried out illustrations of elegant women in long coats or evening jackets pinky fingers held delicately aloft. All cards a little rubbed and smudged along the edges but overall nice and bright suitable for display. A wonderful collection for the classic or vintage stylist. <br/><br/> unknown books
1950147039Various cities: Various 1950. Collection of 140 vintage photographs of department store window displays 9 of which are double weight. Eight photographs dated 1948 four dated 1949 with the rest being circa 1950s. Nearly two thirds with stamps on the verso or other identifying information for the photographers or photography studios. <br/><br/>Roughly half of the photographs feature window displays from Peck & Peck a New York based chain that at its peak had 78 stores across the United States including images from its flagship store on 5th Avenue in New York. Also included are 26 photographs of displays at the nearby Stern's as well as 19 photographs from photography studios in Southern California including Los Angeles Long Beach and Pasadena 8 of which are identified as being from Buffum's stores. <br/><br/>The window displays in this collection predominantly feature mannequins showcasing women's clothing and accessories with a smaller number featuring children and teens and occasional ones focused on furniture or household decorations. The displays are arranged in such a way that they create abstract aspirational narratives around travel parties and leisure activities in retrospect giving historical context not to mention a surreal frozen-in-time quality to the Mid-century modern design and fashion. Taken as a whole a fairly comprehensive look at the focus and psychology of women's advertising and fashion in the American mid-century. <br/><br/>10 x 8 inches. Color Printed Brochure by Fashion Artist Reynaldo Luza. Reynaldo Luza 1893-1978 pre-eminent fashion artist was born in Lima Peru. He began training as an architect at the University of Louvain Belgium but returned to Peru at the outbreak of World War I where he changed his studies from architecture to art. In 1918 he came to the United States where he earned his living by contributing drawings to several fashion publications principally VOGUE HARPERS BAZAAR and VANITY FAIR. In 1921 he joined HARPERS BAZAAR as the principal fashion artist a position he was to hold for 27 years. He divided his time between New York Paris and London working closely with all of the leading fashion designers of the times--Poiret Patou Lelong Paquin Douillet Doucet Cheruit Worth Drecoll Callot Soeurs Redfern Martial et Amand Premet Reboux Chanel Vionnet Molyneaux Schiaparelli Hartnell Steibel and Balenciaga among others.<br/><br/>In 1940 Luza made New York his principal base where over the next few years he continued his activities at Harpers as well as creating fabric and furniture designs and the costumes for the movie "The Bridge of San Luis Rey". Among other distinctions he received several honorary appointments from the government of Peru including that of Artistic Director of the Paris Exposition of 1938 and the New York World's Fair of 1939-40; he also did the interior design of the new Lima airport.<br/><br/>In 1950 Luza returned to Peru where he began a second career as a portrait painter exhibiting his work over the next few years in Paris New York and Washington D.C. Contents well preserved ad sheets generally near fine; scrap about very good. <br/><br/>The Melville Company of Cincinatti OH operated during the 1940s and 50s recruiting women to sell dresses and other items of apparel children's clothes socks lingerie men's shirts to their friends and family. As the marketing materials enclosed make clear it was pitched at housewives looking to make extra money and apparently operated much like Tupperware would a decade later. Contains more than 50 patterns for women's clothing as well as few for little girls -- including dresses blouses skirts coats and underwear. Boards a bit worn and warped but contents are nice and fresh. Very little text -- all of it in Dutch -- but the patterns are universally applicable. Presumably created by a student the patterns are painstakingly neat and exact and accompanied by drawings of the finished apparel as well as wonderfully adept drawings of ladies modeling them offering complete looks from hat to shoe. Also includes cut-outs of patterns many of them still holding pins laid-in here and there. Lovely legible and careful throughout you can see that they were first drawn in pencil then traced over in ink and the student's ruler and blotting paper are laid-in at the back.
