First edition of this nicely illustrated catalogue touting the steam locomotives produced and exhibited by the historic Pittsburgh Locomotive Works during the Columbian Exposition. The locomotives featured included an experimental large Passenger Compound Locomotive the Mogul Compound Freight Locomotive for the Columbus Hocking Valley & Toledo Railway; a Freight Locomotive and Tender for the Cincinnati Hamilton & Dayton RR as well as a narrow gauge four-wheel saddle tank locomotive engine. Founded in 1865 by Andrew Carnegie and Thomas Miller the company quickly grew supplying quality large locomtovies for the Bltimroe & Ohio Acheson Topeka & Santa Fe Manhattan Elevated and the Union Pacific thriving until 1901 when it was consolidated into the American Locomotive Co. Original publisher's maroon marbled cloth upper cover with elaborate blocked design in gilt and blind with large central sunken lozenge blocked with a gilt vignette of the "southern mocking bird" signed "Tompson" in reverse derived from the plate facing p. 66. <br /> <p><br /> Illustrated with chromolithographed plates drawn on stone by Max Rosenthal printed by L.N. Rosenthal of Philadelphia after Mrs. Webber 15 or Miller 5. The binding has been expertly and nearly invisibly rebacked indeed we had to use magnification to confirm the reback with the inner hinges strengthened. Some tissue guards are torn and there is occasional light spotting on the plates an offset from the guards. <br /> <p><br /> Miller's contribution consists of five views of Indian life four of which according to the author are of "scenes in the camp of the Delawares" although they are almost certainly based on the artist's sketches of the Snake Indians a sub-group of the Shoshone. The five prints in the present work were drawn on stone by Max Rosenthal. Two of them include images of bare-breasted Indian maidens which were later withdrawn and reissued with the women fully clothed. The prints are titled: 1. Indian Caressing His Horse; 2. Encampment of Indians; 3. Toilet of the Indian Girls; 4. Antelope Chase; 5. Indian Girl Swinging. <br /> <p><br /> The remaining prints in the present work are from drawings of birds 13 and flowers 2 by the wife of the author<br /> <p><br /> Bennett p.111; Reese 28; Ripley p.307; Tyler Prints of the American West pp.64-5; Zimmer p.667. Philadelphia November 1895". This address which was the first notable comment by an African American about Whitman's significance was delivered by Kelly at the Fellowship's Annual Meeting on May 31st 1895. It was originally published in July in the Conservator a journal published by Horace Traubel who was instrumental in setting up the Fellowship.</p><p>Scientist Kelly Miller 1863-1939 was an African American mathematician sociologist essayist newspaper columnist and author. The outside features a scene of school children in front of a school house burnt into the wood and is colored with red green and black paints. The inside has the same great graphics which are in excellent condition. Original brass hinges and clasp. The box contains six compartments filled with pen nibs. Each nib is stamped. Nibs in compartment one are stamped 75/MILLER BRO'S/ANTICORROSIVE; nibs in compartment two are stamped 066/MILLER BROS/VERTICAL; nibs in compartment three are stamped 016/UNITED STATES/SCHOOL PEN; nibs in compartment four are stamped UNITED STATES/BEAD PEN/044; nibs in compartment five are stamped RAILROAD/767; and nibs in compartment six are stamped 04/MILLER BROS/ATTORNEY. Miller Bros. began their manufacture of steel pens in 1882. "The first makers of pens in this country were Harrison & Bradford their factory being located in Mount Vernon New York. The Miller Brothers Cutlery Company bought the mechanical equipment of their plant and engaged Mr. Bradford as superintendent of the new department. In the manufacture of these delicate articles Miller Bros. was as successful as with their cutlery." Miller Bros. manufactured pocket cutlery steel ink erasers and steel pens. A fine and unique item.
