1864191680New York: Frederic A. Brady Publisher 1864. Hardcover. 312p. frontis cartoon man writing at desk preface publisher's note peculiar bookplate on pastedown faint dampstain throughout with a touch of foxing first edition in blind-pressed and gilt-decorated gray cloth boards a poor copy: pervasive dust-soil the gilt titlings and cover vignette but a memory heavy wear to edges corners head and tail of spine external fading and light staining &c within as noted. On a less disapproving note the hinges are sound and handleable. Humorous writings related to Abraham Lincoln and the efforts of the North against the South. A measure how inrigued Americans were with their amazingly quotable president; most of the sketches here presented as anecdotes and "verbatim" dialogue are made-up stuff but in the spirit. Good Clean tight contents but with ex-lib. stamp on title page and bookplate of Robert Sage Griswold 1899 - of the Connecticut Griswolds - inside front cover; covers soiled but tight. Blue cloth with embossed lettering; blue/white illus. laid on. 161 xii pp. with 93 bw illustrations. At The Solicitation of numerous collectors of old English china bearing American views a series of illustrated papers was prepared by the writer and published in The Clay-Worker of Indianapolis Ind. In the introductory chapter nothing but a brief review of the earlier Liverpool designs was attempted because of the scarcity of such pieces at this late day. The main purpose of the compiler was to present as complete a list of the later Staffordshire designs in dark blue and other colors as possible so classified that the productions of each potter should be grouped together whereby the identification of unmarked pieces might be facilitated to some extent by means of common border devices. It was not deemed necessary to present detailed descriptions of views for the reason that they would not be required by collectors who possessed examples of china bearing the designs described nor carry definite meaning to those who did not. The need of a pocket manual of such china compact in arrangement and convenient for ready reference has long been felt. These lists have therefore been republished in a form suitable for collectors and others interested in the subject. The numbering of the American designs and border patterns will afford a convenient means of reference among correspondents and the index at the end will serve as a check list for collections. It was originally intended to indicate the shape of the piece or the size of the plate on which each design occurs but this classification was found to be well-nigh impossible on account of the apparent lack of any definite system followed by manufacturers in the decoration of pieces. - http://www.forgottenbooks.com. Bound in green publisher's cloth gilt decoration of the author on front board blind tooled decorated cloth; binding showing some wear and discoloration. Owners signature of Rufus Munyan Co. D. 18. C.V. Company D 18th Connecticut Volunteers. First edition. Comical narrative by a delusionary "adviser" to Lincoln whose letters pointedly featured the absurdities of war and the madness of the public administration during the 1860's. Barber's view is reflective of many New York writers whose view of Lincoln and the war was decidedly Democratic challenging the ferocity of the Radical Republicans who controlled Washington. Written by the satirist Joseph Barber who also published Crumbs from the Round Table 1866 and The American Book of Ready Made Speeches 1866. The anonymous illustration which introduces the text captures the manic nature of the author with a statue of Lincoln looming over his shoulder Wright Fiction II 210. First edition. A sequel to John Hay's novel THE BREAD-WINNERS: A SOCIAL STUDY 1884 that uses some of the same characters from Hay's story. Barber promotes the cooperative movement which will convert the American industrial world into a Christian utopia. Barber "was religious sympathetic to labor and outraged by THE BREAD-WINNERS. She was heavily influenced by the social-gospel movement one of the most important religious movements appearing between the Civil War and World War I. Her novel like other social-gospel labor novel writers was infused with the principles of that movement -- especially that God is immanent in the world working out his purpose through individuals and institutions so adherence to Christian principles could bring harmony to worldly problems including conflict surrounding the labor problem." - Larry W. Isaac "Literary Activists and the Labor Problem" p. 35. THE BREAD-WINNERS elicited other responses most notably Henry Keenan's THE MONEY-MAKERS 1885. Blake The Strike in the American Novel p. 216.
