ABOUT THE AUTHOR: "Ken Barber is a professional lettering artist with over 25 years of experience in the field. As principal letterer at the distinguished design studio and font foundry House Industries he creates logos and wordmarks for people products companies and brands the world over. In his dual role as typeface design director he also curates the company's coveted retail font library. His work is in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution's Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation. Ken has been honored by the New York Type Directors Club Association Typographique Internationale and Design Museum London. He has taught design at many recognized schools including Maryland Institute College of Art University of Delaware and Moore College of Art and is currently an instructor at The Cooper Union in New York City. Ken also enjoys sharing his experience with the students in his hand-lettering workshops that he regularly conducts around the globe. Ken co-authored House Industries: The Process is the Inspiration Watson-Guptill 2017 and House Industries Gestalten 2004 with Andy Cruz and Rich Roat. His forthcoming House Industries Lettering Manual Watson-Guptill will be released in the spring of 2020." ABOUT HOUSE INDUSTRIES: "House Industries is a type foundry and design studio based in Yorklyn Delaware. The company was created in the 1990s in Wilmington Delaware by co-founders Andy Cruz and Rich Roat. The company is best known for its typeface creations which have appeared on television e.g. Nickelodeon's TV Land VH1's Best Week Ever in film e.g. Mission: Impossible III and on commercial products e.g. Ann Taylor garment tag Lucky Charms logo and Green Day's Dookie album. Founders Andy Cruz and Rich Roat met at Miller Mauro Group Inc. a Wilmington Del. marketing communications agency. They briefly worked for Swfte International a Miller Mauro Group client before leaving to form Brand Design Co. Inc in 1993. Cruz and Roat formed House Industries in late 1993. Popular typefaces sold by House Industries include Neutraface a geometric sans-serif Eames Century Modern inspired by the design work of Ray and Charles Eames and Chalet a set of designs inspired by common sans-serifs such as Avant Garde Grotesque Helvetica and its adaptations from the 1960s to the 1990s and a collection of revivals of the lettering of Ed Benguiat. Its SignPainter script font is bundled with macOS. The company goes to elaborate lengths to promote its typefaces including creating chairs pillows and various other items inspired by the typefaces they sell. Curated by Luca Massimo Barbero the exhibition - the result of a cooperative venture involving the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in New York - offered visitors a unique opportunity to compare and contrast the crucial work of European masters of modern art such as Marcel Duchamp Max Ernst Man Ray and Pablo Picasso and European masters of so-called Art Informel or "Unformed Art" such as Alberto Burri Emilio Vedova Jean Dubuffet Lucio Fontana with large paintings and sculptures by some of the most important personalities on the American art scene in the 1950s and 1960s such as Jackson Pollock Mark Rothko Willem de Kooning Alexander Calder Roy Lichtenstein and Cy Twombly. Devoting an exhibition to the Guggenheim collections means telling the fast-paced story of the birth of the Neo-Avant-Garde movements after World War II in a tight and uninterrupted interplay between European and American artists. But producing such an exceptional exhibition in Florence also means celebrating a very special tie that goes back a long way because it was precisely in the Palazzo Strozzi's Strozzina undercroft that Peggy Guggenheim who had only recently arrived in Europe decided in February 1949 to show the collection that was later to find a permanent home in Venice.
