1863List308N.p. 1863. Dark carved wood 11 ½ x 11 ½ x 1 inches with bone border and star inlays in corners an inlaid tree with carved names of Civil War battles as leaves. During the Civil War wounded or captured soldiers would often pass their time waiting to return to duty carving relics. The practice was fairly common with pipes being the most commonly carved object and the quality of the relics varied wildly depending on the talent of the soldier. A.H. Barber from Wisconsin was wounded at Antietam and most likely carved this memorial piece while recovering from his wounds. Each leaf notes a different battle during the 1861-1862 campaigns. Barber enlisted in Company C of the 2nd Wisconsin in 1861 and was discharged in 1863 following wounds suffered at Antietam. The trunk reads Battles for the Union and the four branches read Dept. of the South Army of Virginia & of the Potomac and Dept. of the West with twenty-nine leaves naming battles. <br /> <br /> The resultant plaque is exceptional in timeliness craftsmanship and overall aesthetic beauty. Barber's metaphorically growing tree is particularly timely for the Union cause as the 1863 failure of the Maryland Campaign would serve as inspiration to Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. Wonderfully preserved in excellent condition with no notable flaws. From the collection of Norm Flaydernman the noted Americana dealer who personally collected carved Civil War pipes and had been planning to write a book on the subject at the time of his death. unknown books

Good Clean tight contents but with ex-lib. stamp on title page and bookplate of Robert Sage Griswold 1899 - of the Connecticut Griswolds - inside front cover; covers soiled but tight. Blue cloth with embossed lettering; blue/white illus. laid on. 161 xii pp. with 93 bw illustrations. At The Solicitation of numerous collectors of old English china bearing American views a series of illustrated papers was prepared by the writer and published in The Clay-Worker of Indianapolis Ind. In the introductory chapter nothing but a brief review of the earlier Liverpool designs was attempted because of the scarcity of such pieces at this late day. The main purpose of the compiler was to present as complete a list of the later Staffordshire designs in dark blue and other colors as possible so classified that the productions of each potter should be grouped together whereby the identification of unmarked pieces might be facilitated to some extent by means of common border devices. It was not deemed necessary to present detailed descriptions of views for the reason that they would not be required by collectors who possessed examples of china bearing the designs described nor carry definite meaning to those who did not. The need of a pocket manual of such china compact in arrangement and convenient for ready reference has long been felt. These lists have therefore been republished in a form suitable for collectors and others interested in the subject. The numbering of the American designs and border patterns will afford a convenient means of reference among correspondents and the index at the end will serve as a check list for collections. Very good in its original binding of full leather covered boards with a black leather label with gilt text and extensive gilt decorations on the spine. The front and rear boards are decorated with gilt borders. An octavo measuring 8 7/8 by 5 1/2 inches with heavy rubbing to the leather over the joints and to the edges of the boards. The front free end page is torn at its lower two inches and there is an early prior owner's name Lynda Brownell Sherman Conn. written in pencil on the third free end page. The hand-colored fold-out map of Connecticut is completely intact and has suffered no damage. The preliminaries show moderate foxing and the last 50 pages of the text also show moderate foxing. The joints and hinges remain tight and strong. 560 pages of text. Illustrated throughout with 190 wood block engravings. Contrary to the information contained in Wright Howes bibliography U.S. Iana the first edition of this title was published in 1836. Barber an illustrator and historian 1798-1885 was Connecticut's first popular historian creating one of the first travel guides of the state. Following the index in the front of the book is a hand colored fold-out map of the State of Connecticut noting all of its towns at the time see note above regarding condition. There is a dampness stain on the front end sheets and foxing throughout the contents. Without a dust jacket. 620 pages of text and illustrated with a hand-colored double frontis and with 120 from engravings. The hand-colored fold-out map of the New England states New York Pennsylvania and New Jersey follows page 8 and suffers only from multiple creases and very minor losses to the margins several other maps within the text and a number of plates.
