Jimenez was a fictional character created and performed by comedian Bill Dana on The Steve Allen Show in 1959 and who became increasingly popular during the 1960s and is cited in this volume on several occasions. This character introduced himself with the catch phrase: "My name. Jose Jimenez". The character of Jose Jimenez caught on with the seven real Mercury astronauts and Dana became good friends with them: "Okay Jose you're on your way!" Deke Slayton quipped as Alan Shepard's famous first flight launched. Jose became the program's unofficial mascot and Dana was even made an honorary Mercury astronaut. An uncommon account of a two-week hunting excursion in the Sierras of Chihuahua in northern Mexico. Carpenter from Ohio was primarily hunting deer and his small group departed El Paso Texas on October 23 1905 headed for their base at Casas Grandes some 165 miles to the south. Carpenter's companions were brothers from El Paso: J.F. Bennett referred to as "the Treasurer" and Hilario F. Bennett "the Photographer". Carpenter describes their hunting experiences the deer and other animals that they shot life in camp an awful meal at a Chinese restaurant their first night in Chihuahua and the Mexican landscape and people he encountered. He devotes much space to the habits and abilities of his Mexican guide called Valentine and the final chapter is an appreciation of the Mexican people. The text was edited by Melville Pollock who is also the publisher. LIMITED EDITION of 140 copies designed and printed by Saul & Lillian Marks at the Plantin Press. Valtón owned thirty-nine pre-1600 broadsheets listed here by Ed Carpenter 1915-1995. This leaf book contains an original printed leaf from the first press in the New World. It is known that all copies of this edition differ some printed leaves being more desirable. The present specimen is a promissory note opening with the printed phrase "Sepan quantos estra carta vieren come yo . . ." translates closely to "Know by all men that this letter . . ." The accompanying essay describes that similar legal documents were among the first printed documents in Mexico. This was because certain legal phraseology allowed for a document to print the standard words needed and then add the necessary text in manuscript as with this specimen. Dr. Emilio Valtón was the first bibliographer to collect this extremely early and otherwise ignored form of printing in Spain. "Carta de pago" power of attorney. Gothic type. Approx. 9 x 12 ½ inches. 44 lines. Printed on one side. With a leading capital letter S followed by the phrase cited above "Sepan. . ." followed by seven lines of manuscript text. Then in printed form begins "Generalmente para a en todos mis pleytos causas ceuiles y criminal les mouidos y poz mouer que yo be y tengo con qual esquier personas y las tales y otras quale . . ." The verso also has a nine-line manuscript with elaborate signature. By inference this piece is attributed to Pedro Ocharte. See: Valtón Emilio. As an executive for DuPont helped turn the company into a modern scientific company and diversify from gunpowder and explosives. He was also an avid hunter and big game hunter and a member of the Boone and Crockett Club. As a director of the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences he went on many trips to Africa to collect big game animals for the museum's dioramas. Game Trails from Alaska to Africa covers Carpenter's hunting trips from 1933 to 1938. He discussion includes hunting Pronghorn in Wyoming Mountain Lion in Arizona and Jaguar in Mexico. Original typescript with frequent revisions and alterations throughout in pencil and occasionally in ink with a few inserts in carbon typescript. Punched and enclosed in leatherette binder. Generally very good to fine. An original working typescript for this evidently unproduced musical adaptation with text and lyrics by Rosen to be accompanied by music by Carleton Carpenter. The undertaking was quite ambitious and this draft stems from a point of ongoing substantive revision. Evidently plans proceeded to a further stage as tipped in front is a clipping from an unidentified trade paper indicating that Cyril Ritchard had been signed for the lead and negotiations were ongoing for a Broadway run produced by Kermit Bloomgarden. However IBDB records no such production though Rosen's and Carpenter's other Broadway accomplishments are represented. Rosen is there credited with staging the 1938-9 WPA Production of Shaw's ANDROCLES AND THE LION at the Lafayette Theatre in New York which ran 104 performances and featured an all African American cast. hardcover books
