Two volumes duodecimo with three wide folding engraved plates after John Webber; uncut in the original orange paper wrappers with printed paper labels. <p><p>A very good set in original condition of this attractive popular French account of various voyages for children. As the title suggests much of the material here is taken directly from the voyages of Captain Cook. The three folding engraved plates all after Webber respectively depict a MÄori war canoe a walrus hunt and a Tahitian human sacrifice.</p> <p>There were a number of juvenile editions based on Jean-Pierre Bérenger's popular collections of voyage accounts which first appeared in 1780. Bérenger was a Swiss polymath; politically active he was exiled from Geneva and spent much of his adult life in Lausanne. He wrote several important books on geography and the voyages to the Pacific. This Paris edition is largely devoted to the voyages of Cook and has chapters describing Tahiti New Zealand Unalaska and the Sandwich Islands followed by an abridged life of the navigator. Forbes notes that the second volume of this work includes a lengthy section some fifty pages devoted to Hawaii.</p> <p>No copy of this specific version is recorded by Forbes in Hawaiian National Bibliography though its existence is noted in the entries for two Avignon editions 370 & 495.</p> </p> . n.p. unknown
1877List2842Bismarck Dakota Territory 1877. 4 x 8 inches. Folded some stains and foxing excellent. Camp Hancock in what is now Bismarck North Dakota was built in 1872 as facilities for US troops. The troops were stationed there to guard supplies equipment and crews as the Northern Pacific Railway was constructed through the area. In 1877 it became a quartermaster depot and signal office. Offered here is a menu for the Camp’s May Day celebration in 1877 presenting five courses of French-style fare. unknown

The "Official catalog musical program list of exhibitors" for this fourth congress of members of the Boston Retail Grocers Association. The association was founded in 1881 and held its first food fair that year. Photographic portraits of the senior members of the Association are included as is a description of Miss Nellie Dot Ranche of Chicago who was brought in for the occasion to run the Domestic Science Programs. It's interesting that the committee reached out to the Midwest at this moment when Cooking Schools in Boston were on the rise and very visible. The copious advertising displays a range of categories of goods one would find in a grocery of the turn of the 19th century: coffee cocoa mustard Havana cigars root beer Ceylon tea French Coca Wine virgin olive oil nut meats and salt as well as household goods including: thread collars washing liquids bluing ink. Also represented are goods and services aimed at the grocers and retailers: boxes and bags promotional printing specialized contracting refrigeration etc. Tiny bit of spotting to green and gold-printed gray wrappers otherwise fine. First edition of this scarce and fascinating business and land promotion for the city of Lynn Massachusetts at the height of the Gilded Age filled with advertising extolling the virtues and products of this New England manufacturing town. Following the Civil War Lynn rapidly developed as the center of shoe manufacturing and leather manufacturers in Massachusetts revolutionized by the introduction widespread adoption and use of the shoe sewing machine. The advertisements in this work the photographs and text all indicate a fast growing economy filled with wide streets well built homes & businesses a broad array of retailers including jewelers carpenters gunsmiths cigar stores lumber stores grocery stores hardware stores as well as a wider group of dyers leather makers machinists and factories all acting as suppliers for the dominant shoe trade. The photographs include street scenes businesses and contemporary advertising as well as photographic photos of the Kid & Morocco Manufactory for P.P. Tapley & Co. at No. 114 Broad Street; Factory & retail operation for C.H. Aborn & Co. Lennox & Co. Goat & Morocco; John Mahon & Sons Shoe Manufacturers; the Bay Street Wheel Co. with sample wheels arranged in front; the Lynn Hotel first opened in 1803 and built by the Salem Turnpike & Chelsea Bridge Corp. Also included is a photo advertising Josiah Heal’s attempt to sell his grocery business & building for $ 75000 at the corner of Washington & Oxford Streets in order to go West he does not appear in census or street directories for about 10 years. Of particular interest is the photo of Lydia E. Pinkham’s residence & laboratory producing the famed Vegetable Compound marketed to women to relieve menstrual cramps and menopausal symptoms first developed in 1873 containing black cohosh life root unicorn root pleurisy root and fenugreek seed with a “preservative†of 20% alcohol. From 1860 to the end of the 19th century Lynn’s population increased from about 12000 to over 60000 with a massive influx of farm workers leaving the farms to fill the factory jobs as well as increased immigration. Cook fl. 1872-1879 operated as a photographer in Sharon and Hudson Massachusetts but no address for a studio appear in contemporary street directories. Heal 1841-1925 was one of the most successful grocers and civic boosters for Lynn Massachusetts and although unclear whether he ever made the move West he does not appear to have directory listings for his business during part of the 1880s. Light toning to the paper. <br /> <br /> From wikipedia: Daniel McCook June 20 1798 – July 21 1863 was an attorney and an officer in the Union army during the American Civil War. He was one of two Ohio brothers who along with 13 of their sons became widely known as the “Fighting McCooks†for their contributions to the war effort.12.With the outbreak of the Civil War McCook although 63 years old volunteered his services to the Union. He was commissioned as a major and paymaster. When Confederate Brig. Gen. John H. Morgan led his troops through southern Ohio during Morgan's Raid Major McCook joined in the advance of the Union pursuit. Early in the morning of July 19 1863 Federal troops attacked Morgan at Buffington Island where the Confederates were planning to cross the Ohio River back into Western Virginia. McCook was shot and mortally wounded. He died two days later and his body was buried with full military honors in Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati Ohio.5. n/a unknown

This edition was preceded by an 1845 edition done in Mexico by Cumplido with a slight title variation. This is considered the true first edition. Rare cornerstone work.</p><p><strong><u>Bibliographical "mystery"</u></strong><u>:</u> Both Palau 196443 and OCLC describe this work with a different title "<em>Nuevo Cocinero Mexicano</em>" but with the same publisher pagination and illustrations as ours. As later editions changed the title to "<em>Nuevo Cocinero Americano</em>" this might be a unique copy or a proof title page of the first edition with the "new" title that the publisher planned to use in later editions.</p><p>As Dan Strehl says in the introduction to Encarnación's Kitchen: "<em>In Mexico the printing of cookbooks began in the 1830s with large comprehensive books authored mostly by men. By that time Mexico possessed a highly evolved cuisine combining distinctive Spanish Indian and French influences. This is documented in the first cookbook printed in Mexico in 1831 El cocinero mexicano. El Cocinero mexicano has had a remarkably long and important life in Mexican culinary literature. In 1845 the 1834 edition was rearranged in alphabetical order by Mariano Galván Rivera and published throughout the nineteenth century with reprints through the twentieth century</em>"</p><p>The editor of this edition reviews the history of this cookbook and others and explains the rationale for the present edition. He states that over 3000 copies of his own cookbook have been sold since it first appeared in 1831 in addition to the many others both produced domestically and imported from abroad. He further remarks that he has thoroughly edited the text removing some unpopular recipes and adding others especially in light of the fact that "<em>la cocina francesa ha invadido nuestros comedores</em>" thereby making Mexican cooking more cosmopolitan. In recipe revisions or new introductions however the recipes have been suited to Mexican tastes and ingredients.</p><p>The publisher also remarks specifically on the lithographs which he remarks have been included to clarify points and demonstrate how things are actually done. Finally he observes that he has kept the price low so that the book is "<em>al alcance aun de las personas de poca fortuna</em>." Folded letter to Wheeling Virginia with learly struck two-line datestamp with "Paid 10" manuscript rate and blue "Steam" handstamp of New Orleans on 1847 with an unusual “Steam†marking applied in New Orleans. Fine condition. Fine. A descriptive and interesting letter from Captain George W. Clutter of Wheeling Virginia describing the scenes and food in Vera Cruz in detail. Clutter had enlisted a detachment of thirty-two men in early 1847 in Monongalia County for service in the war who would eventually become known as the “Mountain Boys of Monongalia.†Clutter was promoted to the captaincy upon the resignation of John Tyler. The company sailed in June of 1847 on the Brig “Tuckahoe†from Old Point Comfort to Point Isabel where they marched to join General Taylor’s forces. <br /> <br /> This interesting letter written by Clutter from Vera Cruz describes the city and cuisine of Vera Cruz in detail. He writes “I am now boarding at the best Hotel in the city - it is called "Bells Stage House'. It is kept by a German lady in great grandeur. The quantity of fruit here is astonishing. Oranges are for sale at about the rate apples would sell in the Wheeling market. I only wish I could send you and the children some of them - such ones as you never eat in the United States as it would be impossible to carry them so far without rotting. <br /> <br /> As we get dinner here at 3 o'clock and no such thing as supper is known I stepped out this evening and obtained a 'cup of chocolate' and 'toast'. If an American or rather United States cook could taste such chocolate as the Mexicans make they never would attempt making the article again - and it is not so much in the simple making of the chocolate but it's in preparing it at the start - for every family even the provost understands making the article from the Cocoa.†Clutter offers additional details on troop movements and logistics of the campaign. Two prints from the "Four Stages of Cruelty".The "First Stage of Cruelty" describes the cruelty of unsupervised boys. In the center Tom Nero holding onto the post and wearing a wide brimmed hat and an accomplice are plunging an arrow into the rectum of a dog. The "Second Stage of Cruelty" Tom Nero has reached adulthood and become a hackney coach driver. He is seen doing what he did in his childhood mercilessly beating his horse because it collapsed carrying a load of too many overweight barristers. Copper engraving. Uncoloured. 180657827Hogarth Restored. The Whole Works of the Celebrated William Hogarth. G.G. & I. Robinson. 1806. Hudibras is a mock heroic narrative poem from the 17th century written by Samuel Butler. The work is a satirical polemic upon Roundheads Puritans Presbyterians and many of the other factions involved in the English Civil War. The work was written in three parts in 1663 1664 and 1678 although an unauthorised edition came out in 1662. Ten prints are on five sheets - two prints on each sheet. Copper Engraving. Very good condition. Some light staining to the margins though not affecting the image. Sheet size: 41.5 x 55.5 cm Uncoloured. Size: 36 x 54.5 cm. 14 x 21½ inches unknown
