Near fine with a bit of rubbing at the corners and tiny tear at the crown. A memoir with a brief biography of Cook reprints of several obituaries and comments from friends and colleagues. Cook was born in Ballston Massachusetts on November 19 1807 to Judge Samuel Cook one of the earliest residents of Connecticut. James was a delegate to the New York State Constitutional Convention of 1846 and twice elected a New York State Senator 1848-51 and 1864-65. Complete in two 2 volumes uniformly bound in brown 3/4 cloth marbled paper covered boards ruled borders and lettered in gilt on spine panels top text block edge in gilt deckled edges. We have never encountered this binding variant on this title and suspect that the set has been rebound using the original boards or that it may be custom though there are no binder's tags present. In any case a professional job with lovely results. Light rubbing along those portions of the edges not wrapped in cloth otherwise presenting virtually as issued with fully intact hinges firm bindings clean and unmarked interiors. Solid Near Fine bordering on Fine. xii402 viii412 pp. illus. w/ numerous b&w plates with captioned guards color folding "Railway Map of England and Wales" at rear of Vol. II. Eliza Cook was a extremely successful writer appealing to the working classes of both England and the U.S. Her success with this societal group was helped in part my Cook's open support of women's right's and her belief in the importance of mainstream education. Writing from a young age Cook was merely seventeen when her first volume was published. Previous owners bookplate to the front pastedown reads 'Martha Boobbyer. 1846.' Rebound in a full personalised crushed morocco binding. Externally sound although with remnants of leather cream to the front board. Some light rubbing to the extremities. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Very light straining to the front hinge. Internally firmly bound and bright although with some light instances of spotting.
