He held the post of Regius Professor of Botany at Glasgow University and was the first Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew. He enjoyed the friendship and support of Sir Joseph Banks for his exploring collecting and organising work. His son Joseph Dalton Hooker succeeded him to the Directorship of Kew Gardens.In Australia Lawrence and Gunn in Tasmania Drummond in Western Australia Mueller and Adamson in Victoria and others sent copious material to Kew. Hooker published tirelessly including many descriptions of Australian plants particularly in the journals which he edited Botanical Miscellany and The Journal of Botany. unknown

The edges of the spine and the coversare scuffed; there is the beginning of a split at the top front spine-edge and some cracking on the inside front hinge but the binding is firm. Some spotting a bit of foxing on some engravings but minor for its age.</p><p>The British Library catalogues this as "The abridgment of G. W. Anderson.". G. W. Anderson is thought to be the pseudonym of the earlier publisher Alexander Hogg who published it in parts.</p><p>The British Library copy includes at the end a list of the engravings on one page and another page of "New Works published by J. Robins and Co." This copy does not have those two unnumbered pages; All the engravings listed on that sheet are present in the current volume and a copy is included among the photographs accompanying this listing. There ar 18 engravings of which are vignettes for the half-title and the start of each of the tree voyages.</p> J. Robins and Co. Six volumes duodecimo with six engraved plates one in each volume original blue printed wrappers preserved a charming set in period Spanish quarter calf gilt. <p><p>Very uncommon first Spanish edition of Cook's first voyage published in 1832 as part of a series described as the 'New Library of Modern Voyages useful and interesting for Spanish youth.' The work has a charming series of six plates which include a scene in Tahiti featuring the Chief Mourner and two New Zealand scenes a warrior in profile the war canoe and conclude with a dramatic scene on board the Endeavour. The presence of the original printed wrappers bound-in is of more than passing interest as the back wrappers give an interesting overview of how the set was marketed being sold for 6 reales per volume as they were issued whether in Madrid or in the provinces and stressing the value of the work for the instruction of youth. Each volume would subsequently be priced 8 reales per volume.</p> <p>The translator Alvarado y de la Pena based his work on the French edition of Cook's first voyage. He also prepared at least one other work of Australian interest an edition of George Barrington published in Madrid circa 1815. Beddie listed copies in the Mitchell and National Libraries.</p> </p> . He also organized one of the first polar tourist excursions to Greenland. He began his polar experience in 1891 as a surgeon on Robert Peary's second Greenland expedition. This book is about his participation as the surgeon in the Belgian Antarctic Expedition of 1897 in the Belgica under the command of Adrien De Gerlache de Gomery. Cook was also the expedition photographer and most of the images in this book were by Cook. The ship became icebound in the Bellingshausen Sea and was unexpectedly forced to over winter. <br /> <br /> This book was the first significant English-language account of over wintering in Antarctica until Gerlache's book was translated in 1998. From Rosove this book was "superior to the other two from both literary and informational viewpoints. Cook based his book . on his diary notes and recollections; he included some of the scientific results in the appendices ." Cook's attentiveness to the health of the men during the long winter was evident with few deaths. Blue stationery 15" x 9" folded in half with flattened mailing folds. All letters are docketed on the rear with a concise description: "Informing me what he had done in Smiths district requesting instructions how to proceed" "Returning his executed contract and bond" and "Forwards blanks for account connecting and direction". The letters are a bit more lively than that including: A falling tree killing another surveyor the rigors and hard going of the crew disgruntled Settlers disappointed with Nebraska but Omaha City is improving." All items in fine condition. "1849 Dear Sir.I send herewith the papers all executed. I have obtained the Standard measure from the Chain of S.
