Danilo Samoilowitz Samoilovich et al 1742/4 - 1805 is noted among other titles as "Chirurgien-Major du Senat de Moscou" and was a witness to and attempted to treat the victims of the great Russian Plague of 1770-72 often at great personal hazard. The U.S. NIH National Library of Medicine lists several articles extolling the significance of Samoilowitz' contribution to epidemiology; see especially the 2013 June issue of Vesalius for the thorough Tatiana Sorokina article "A Victory Over the Plague in Moscow 1770-1772" which details the public and private response to the epidemic and specifically Samoilowitz' and others work combatting the outbreak. Stitching lacking loosening gatherings some light spotting or soiling of front and back leaves and general edgewear else a very good copy. A contemporary owner has annotated and underlined several sections in the Tea Act. 92 pp. 8vo. These acts passed that years were seen by the author as being the most pertinent and so included in this work the rest of the acts of Parliament were to be released shortly thereafter in a second part. The acts abstracted were the 1 Tea and Window repealing the several Duties and for granting other duties in lieu and duties on coffee and cocoa nuts Act 2 The Game Act hunting license 3 The Horse Act granting duties on riding and carriage horses 4 The Postage Act increasing postage rates 5 The Pawn Broker's Act trying to reduce the handling of stolen goods 6 The Soap and Starch Act requiring the licensing of makers of starch and instilling new laws on soapmakers 7 The Cotton and Linen Act placing duties 8 The Hatter's Act requiring licenses laying additional duties on imported hats 9 The Excise Goods Act laying duties upon licences to be taken out by the makers and delers in exciseable commodities 10 The Candle Act cancelling the duty on wax candles made in Britain 11 The Distillery Act trying to discourage home distillation by discontinuing the duties uon low wines and spirits for home consumption. 12 The Hackney Coach Act increasing the charge for Hackey license 13 The Smuggling Act trying to prevent 14 Brick and Tile Act placing duties on brick and tile made in Great Britain and additional duties on those imported 15 Wax Candle Act placing additional duties on all candles except wax and spermaceti candles. Contemporary mottled tree calf rebacked in period style with gilt fillets and retained existing lettering piece hinges mended. Light rubbing to boards corners bumped and somewhat worn. Copperplate allegorical vignette featuring Lady Justice at head of dedication iii. Moderate toning to text somewhat heavier in places light foxing light soiling to preliminaries and rear endleaves small tear to lower margin of table two leaves of contemporary manuscript notes laid-in. $950. Second edition. This well-respected edition is notable for its elegant parallel translation. Harris an advocate of Doctor's Commons provides an interesting historical introduction and notes that compare the rules of Roman and English law. The final section is a translation of "Concerning the Succession of Descendents" Book 118 of the Novels. This work was owned by many sophisticated lawyers in Great Britain and America such as Thomas Jefferson. who owned a copy of this edition. The first edition was published in 1756 its final edition the third in 1811. One of the laid-in manuscript leaves is a copy of the table of descents and its accompanying text from pp. 28-31. The other is an itemized bill or estimate for spinning and weaving cloth with a crude diagram of a spinning wheel. Sowerby Catalogue of the Library of Thomas Jefferson 2191. 1770983801Upon Granny in her supposed Grandure. etching on paper. London: Printed for Carington Bowles Map & Printseller in St'Pauls Church yrd_London ca. 1770. Original edition later state. Engraved by T.S. after M. Laroon. Etching on laid paper with fleur de lys watermark. Size 7 Â½" x 11 1/8" 284 x 189mm with thread margin. Bottom margin trimmed. Slight soiling. A raggedly dressed cross-eyed old woman stands in front of St. James's Palace. Eight lines of verse above the image describe her "supposed grandure"; another eights lines below describe her "native poverty." The verses suggests she was once a fine lady; now she is a deformed street beggar. James Caufield in Portraits Memoirs and Characters of Remarkable Persons 1818 discusses this print. "This miserable wretched drunken object who was blind of one eye used to annoy the passengers in the streets of London while sober with licking her blind eye with her tongue which was of a most enormous length and thickness; indeed it was of such a prodigious size that her mouth could not contain it and she could never close her lips or to use a common expression keep her tongue within her teeth. This wonderful feat of washing her eye with her tongue was exhibited with a view of obtaining money from such as crowded around her and no sooner had she obtained sufficient means but she hastened to the first convenient liquor-shop to indulge her propensity in copious libations and when properly inspired would rush into the streets with all the gestures of a frantic maniac and roll and dance about until she became a little sobered which was sometimes accelerated by the salutary application of a pail of water gratuitously bestowed upon her by persons whose door-way she had taken possession of as shelter from the persecuting tormenting's of boys and girls who generally followed her. It should seem from the verses within the print this woman had been used in early days to scenes of gaiety and splendor." Pp 108-110 While attempts have been made to identify the actual subject represented in this etching these attempts have always failed. The most likely intention of this etchings is depict a naturalistic view of life that finds beauty to be brief and time to be brutal. From 250 years later we witness that in the 18th century the deformed poor were treated with ridicule instead of with mercy Ref: Caufield James. Portraits Memoirs and Characters of Remarkable Persons: From the Revolution in 1688 to the End of the Reign of George II. Collected from the Most Authentic Accounts Extant London: H.R. Young . and T.H. Whitely 1819. Volumes 1-2. Caulfield mentions three prints of Lady Granny: "There are three prints of old Granny one in 4to. mezzotinto and two whole length engravings the best of which is that with the first eight lines of verses engraved in the background of the print." This print exists in an earlier state also recorded in the British Museum 1851-308.308 without the verses and with the caption "Granny" with the signature Laroon Pinx and an engraver's monogram TS Catalogue of engraved British portraits preserved in the Department of prints and drawings in the British museum v. 2 p. 369 Laroon Marcellus 1653-1702 artist A note on the website suggest that the subject represents Abigail Masham d 1734 once Queen Anne's favorite. See BM 1887 1216.3. While Lady Masham certainly had scars to show from her rise from obscurity to Court the actual subject if there was one will never be known Bowles books

Eight volumes bound in one sixteenmo size 384 pp. A collection of almanacs from the year 1785 with a lovely scenic fore-edge painting which shows a road leading to a lake containing two boats some buildings reminscent of castles or villas in the background and two trees on each side whose branches reach towards each other in the middle. Contents are varied and unusual and include poetry proverbs answers to philisophical and critical questions answers to enigmas monthly observations descriptions of the planets and zodiac chronologies of remarkable occurrences eclipses astrological prognostications chapters from "The Surprising Story of the Witch of the Woodlands" and the usual tables and charts relating to the moon stars sun planets tides birthdays of the royal family terms and returns weight of coins and calendars among many other interesting trifles. ___DESCRIPTION: Contemporary polished red calf with decorative gilt-panel borders to both boards four raised bands and backstrip stamped in gilt all edges gilt fore-edge painting marbled endpapers title-pages printed in red and black red price-stamp to each title-page numerous engravings tables charts and mathematic equations in text; sixteenmo size 6.5" by 4" each almanac is paginated separately each is 48 pp. first editions as per usual. ___CONDITION: Near fine overall the leather boards bright in colour and supple text block is tight/square with solid hinges internally lightly toned with some scattered foxing the fore-edge painting details clear; two leaves with short tears at the gutter margin title pages of "The Gentleman's Diary" and "Old Poor Robin" some of the paint from the fore-edge painting has stained the outer margins of some leaves none obscure text spine somewhat sunned and professional restoration has been applied to the joints. Riots in Rome: The Spanish Bourbons in Southern Italy - from the Thomas Phillips Collection. Following the acquisition of the Kingdom of Naples and the Two Sicilies by the Bourbons of Spain in 1736 the conquering Spanish troops returning through Rome and Papal States provoked anti-Spanish riots in March of 1736. The following 6 manuscripts each in a different contemporary hand all from the collection of Sir Thomas Phillips and comprising Phillips Ms. 7544 relate to those events.
