English Dissenters: Protestant Christians who disagreed in opinion belief and other matters and separated from the Church of England in the 17th and 18th centuries. Many emigrated to the "New World" especially to British colonies the Thirteen Colonies on the Atlantic coast of North America and also to Canada. It is considered by many that English dissenters played a key role in the spiritual development of the United States. This spirit of independence initially born of the determination to achieve independence in conduct of religious observance gave rise eventually to the American Revolutionary War of 1775 and subsequent independence in 1776. Coat of arms of Andrew Robert Vaughan Daubeney 1873-1971 on pastedown 1 leaf with 2 ink crossings out and 2 marginal ink "corrections". Frontispiece and facing page are a bit squeezed into gutter and the plate is cropped at fore-edge but otherwise all margins are good and side notes are not cropped. A nice copy with some signs of use. Highlights include chapters on Brownists and Quakers. There is a plate of an Adamite on p117. Pagitt or Pagit was a committed Royalist. This 6th posthumous edition is the last publication of his most notable work with many more pages of new material and portrait plates added by the publisher William Lee after his 5th edition. The last section with portrait of James Naylor 1618-1660 notably says "The Quaker is an upstart branch of the Anabaptists lately sprung up but thickest set in the North parts; the body of this Heresie is composed and made up out of the dregs of the common people" Referenced by ESTC R24442 Wing CD-Rom 1996 P181. Contemporary quarter-brown suede over terracotta cloth boards gilt lettering to the spine red speckeld foredges new endpapers. Light rubbing to the suede leather hint of sunning to the front board else extremities remain in near fine condition. Contents remarkably well-preserved indicating only a touch of slight foxing chiefly confined to the preliminary pages otherwise without blemish markings or notations. Overall very good. The British Library in their catalogued entry notes the presence of two variants of the imprint 'The first line of the imprint has "And Sold". A remarkable and crucial historical account of the raging debates within the English parliament surrounding the events leading up to the Glorious Revolution of 1688 also known as the Bloodless Revolution An Réabhlóid Ghlórmhar Irish: Rèabhlaid Ghlòrmhor Scottish Gaelic; Chwyldro Gogoneddus Welsh; Glorieuze Overtocht Dutch which witnessed the deposition of James II also James VII of Scotland from the English Throne in favour of his daughter Mary II and her husband "stadtholder and de facto ruler of the Dutch Republic" William III of Orange. The Revolution would see the passage of the landmark Bill of Rights of 1689 ensured the exclusion of Catholics from the English throne severely curtailed the monarch's power and witnessed the effective establishment of a constitutional monarchy thereby ensuring the supremacy of Parliament. It further led to the Act of Toleration of 1689 granting toleration to "Nonconformist Protestants" but excluding Catholics whose emancipation would be delayed for a further 140 years. The present volume deals chiefly with Parliament's resolution relating to whether James had forfeited or abdicated the throne by virtue of his having discarded the "Great Seal of the Realm" into the River Thames prior to fleeing for France his subsequent capture at Kent and later exile under the protection of Louis XIV of France. Ultimately Parliament declared that: "King James II having endeavored to subvert the constitution of the kingdom by breaking the original contract between king and people and by the advice of Jesuits and other wicked persons having violated the fundamental laws and having withdrawn himself out of this kingdom has abdicated the government and that the throne is thereby vacant." Illustrated with an engraved title page a woodcut publisher's device on the printed title page and with woodcut initials and headpieces. Early twentieth-century bookplate of Viscount Birkenhead on the front pastedown. Dibdin 331. Moss 494. Oxford Classical Dictionary 1198. Dibdin cites this imprint as one of the scarcest and most valuable of the octavo Variorum classics. This edition is praised for the elegance of its typography the correctness of the text and the usefulness of the commentary. Pliny the Younger was a soldier and a senator in the latter part of the first century A.C.E. into the second century A.C.E. During his lifetime he wrote and published nine books of literary letters concerned with social domestic judicial and political matters. These letters are rhetorically crafted with their syntax and semantics tooled to create a new literary style new to Rome. His letters provide a history of quotidian matters in Rome with plenty of anonymous criticisms aimed at slave owners political weasels and the miserly. Senatorial debates elections and trials and other matters of public life are revealed in his letters. The final book is composed of letters between him and Trajan. These were likely first published after Pliny's death. These letters function as a historical source for understanding how the Romans governed their provinces. In one letter Pliny describes one of the earliest accounts of Christian worship and describes the prejudiced attitude of pagan people towards what was then the Christian minority in the Roman Empire. An illuminating history of Rome beautifully bound. A Very Good or better copy with a touch of rubbing to the extremities particularly to the bottom corners and the front joint. Meditation. The suffering and death of God for us is our continual meditation. Woodcut device of heraldic shield and cardinals hat with tassels on title. Woodcut chapter head vignettes and tailpieces one repeating of Evangelist John on isle of Patmos and another of Veronicas veil and woodcut historiated initials mostly birds throughout. Dedicated to LÂme Chrétienne. The Christian Soul. Italic and Roman type. Contemporary speckled calf spine gilt in compartments; joints splitting light edgewear; margins trimmed close affecting few engravings. Front pastedown with book label of Justin Godart 1871-1956 a French politician and bibliophile of Lyon. Godarts personal library stamp is also on title with the Lyonnais lion. Internet records show that the library of Justin Godart was sold at auction in Paris by Hôtel Drouot in 1957. Importantly this book remained part of the local fabric of the French city from its publication to over 275 years. Stated seventh edition of this devotional text on the Passion of Christ printed by a public brotherhood of Catholics although no other editions located. It is a highly uncommon pocket prayer book with little traceable history save the fact that this same 1679 edition appeared in an auction by Techener in 1861. Another Meditations publication by the same society appears 39 years later as the Nouvelle édition Chez Barthelemy Martin 1718 now held in the Public Library of Lyon. This elusive and largely anonymous French Catholic confraternity probably a local chapter of Lyon likely had various periods of flourishing and disbands or did not make large print-runs of their books possibly explaining the scarcity. The aim of this brotherhoods untitled publication was to disseminate widely the prayers and reflections to be offered daily first day of the month second day etc. for the suffering of Christ. By publishing a text like this the brothers would in effect be gathering lower orders to participate in penitential exercises which is in itself an act of devotion and which would win them indulgences. In total there are 41 copperplate engravings attributed to François Houat who came from a family of printers and engravers in Northern France. These engravings are exceptional for their dramatic shadows and perspectives. As well the Guillimin publishers were known for their Catholic devotional imprints. For 31 days a full-page copperplate engraved scene of Christs Passion with captions precedes each daily reflection. The daily meditations build up chronologically ending with Christs death on the cross. Full-page engravings are also for Litany of the Passion Litany to the Infant Christ Nativity Lent repeating frontispiece Resurrection Ascension Pentecost the Blessed Sacrament and the emblemata of the brotherhood skull instruments of Passion candle and hourglass. French penitent confraternities survived during the early modern centuries as they underwent several transformations which made them more reflective of French as opposed to Italian devotional sensibilities. They enjoyed prestige and spiritual currency in Catholic society right up the Revolution. Chez Pierre Guillimin hardcover

The prolegomena of John Frickis prefixed to it contain a critical notice of preceeding editions of the Septuagint Version which is said to be very accurate" see Thomas Hartwell Horne's "A Manual of Biblical Bibliography" Page 44 Nr. 9. "The LXX. was printed from a copy of the London edition of 1653 which follwed the Sixtine text. This was collated with the Aldine edition and the variants found in that and in the Frankfort edition of 1597 which closely followed the Aldine are noted in an appendix. The New Testament text is printed from Fell's edition of 1675 No. 4711 in Darlow and Moule but the variant readings are relegated to an appendix. In the N. T. the references are printed immediately below the verse to which they belong. The Prayer of Manasses and a prologue to Ecclus which are not found in the Sixtine edition are apparently taken from an edition by J. A. Fabricius 1691 and appended to the Apocrypha. An engraved headpiece depicting Fridenstein appears before Genesis; a similar engraved headpiece depicting Altenburgum before Matthew and a coat-of-arm with the motto "Amore et prudentia" before Isaiah." The later work is a translation of a Latin christological version of Josephus' De bello Judaico dating from ca. 367-374 A.D. It is of uncertain authorship but cited as the work of "Hegesippus" or "Egesippus." It was transmitted among the works of and sometimes attributed to Ambrose Bishop of Milan Titus Flavius Josephus was a first-century Romano-Jewish historian who was born in Jerusalem. He fought against the Romans during the First Jewish–Roman War as head of Jewish forces in Galilee but surrendered in 67 CE to Roman forces led by Vespasian. After Vespasian became Emperor in 69 CE he granted Josephus his freedom at which time Josephus assumed the emperor's family name of Flavius. Josephus recorded Jewish history with special emphasis on the first century CE and the First Jewish–Roman War 66–70 CE including the Siege of Masada. His most important works were The Jewish War c. 75 and Antiquities of the Jews c. 94. The Jewish War recounts the Jewish revolt against Roman occupation. Antiquities of the Jews recounts the history of the world from a Jewish perspective for an ostensibly Greek and Roman audience. These works provide valuable insight into first century Judaism and the background of Early Christianity although not specifically mentioned by Josephus. Josephus' works are the chief source next to the Bible for the history and antiquity of ancient Palestine. For centuries Josephus' works were more widely read in Europe than any book other than the Bible. They are an invaluable eye-witness to a momentous turning point in Judaism Christianity and Western civilization. The present edition was first published in 1569. Graesse III Pp. 481-482 hardcover
