This Compendium of Roman History by Velleius is an early edition of Dutch classical scholar Pieter Burman the elder. His history written in a rhetorical style covered the period from the end of the Trojan War to the death of Livia in 29 A.D. and most useful for the period from the death of Julius Caesar in 44 B.C. to the death of Augustus in 14 A.D. 1735279042Dublin: Samuel Fairbrother 1735. Regarding an important controversy over taxation of landed Protestants of Ireland by the Clergy. Many were forced by economics to sell their lands and leave; the result of this "tythe" was threat of mass emigration to America by the remaining Protestants. A report from an ad hoc committee of the Irish House of Commons called in 1735 to consider an important question on tax burden and emigration. Irish clergy had demanded an additional income from the imposition of a tax for "agistment" pasturage of cattle on Irish Protestant landowners. The committee decided after reviewing the evidence presented in this report that the tax would "impair the Protestant interest" by causing Protestants to emigrate to America reducing the influence of the established church in Ireland. It resolved to find a "proper remedy" though it took no legal action until the Irish House of Commons was dissolved in 1800 when the parliament in London forced an abolition of the old tithes as a formality. 8 folded quarto leaves in a folded drab portfolio. Some significant spotting of about half the leaves. Good.<br/><br/> The earlier of only two publications by this Society an adjunct of the Protestant Episcopal Church. The Society began in 1767 as a response to the hardships visited upon families of "missionaries in the service of the society for the propagation of the gospel in foreign parts" who "have too frequently been obliged to leave their families." This copy without the leaf that appears in some copies containing Address of the Independent Dublin Volunteers to Archibald Rowan and Rowans' Reply. Evans 27643; McCoy R287 for the Dublin edition American not mentioned. Text a bit browned otherwise an excellent copy. <br/><br/>Archibald Hamilton Rowan 1751-1834 was the son of Gawen Hamilton of Killyleagh Castle County Down and Lady Jane Rowan Hamilton. In 1784 he joined the Killyleagh Volunteers a militia group later associated with radical reform under his father's command and in 1790 he was a founding member of The Dublin Society of United Irishmen. He was jailed for seditious libel but escaped to Paris where he befriended Mary Wollstonecraft but the Thermidorian Reaction to the French Revolution proved too tumultuous and he moved on to Philadelphia then Wilmington Delaware over many years descending from riches to rags wary of travel and unable to return to Ireland. His wife was his most loyal and determined advocate and through her efforts he was able to move to Hamburg where he was finally reunited with her and their 10 children and eventually London. This was an interesting time in the spread of maple farming as Europeans tried to break the monopoly that the sugar cane colonies had on sugar production.
