Very good. - Over 85 words penned in a secretarial hand on 2 pages of a 9-7/8 inch high by 7-3/4 inch wide "Treasury Department" stationery with an integral attached leaf. Hartley replies to Senator John Sherman of Ohio who has recommended Thomas Murdock Esq. for the position of Local Inspector of Steamboats at Cincinnati Ohio that "there is no vacancy in the District you desire Mr. Murdock to be appointed." Signed "John F. Hartley" as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury. Folded for mailing the document is docketed by Senator Sherman on the verso. There is a stain from a seal at the top inner corner of the integral leaf with a very small chip. Very good.</p><p>John F. Hartley 1809-1897 served as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury from 1865 to 1875 under Presidents Andrew Johnson and Ulysses S. Grant.</p> [Washington, D.C.], May 5, 1866.

1847100140<p>Southwold April 9th 1847. 1847. Very good. - Over 125 words penned on 7 inch high by 4-3/8 inch wide creamy white paper. The philologist and author James Jermyn regarding a pamphlet he is about to publish: "Altho you I think have not much opinion of the utility of an English Gradus yet I am inclined to hope that I may be allowed to send you a specimen of the little work." Signed "Jas. Jermyn". Folded for mailing the letter was once likely mounted in an autograph book with remnants of gray paper adhering to the corners of the verso and a strip of paper along one edge of the verso. The words "Philologist & author" are penned in an unknown hand at the top of the letter and "Probably to Dawson Turner" is lightly written in pencil at the bottom. Very good.</p><p>The philologist and author James Jermyn 1773-1852 settled at Southwold where he was appointed collector of the pier dues. He was the author of numerous works and pamphlets including a 12-page pamphlet "Prospectus and Specimen of an English gradus and dictionary of ideas: containing the synonyms epithets and phrases of out language faithfully collected from the great body of English poetry and other authorities" published in 1848.</p> Southwold, April 9th, 1847.

The card is lightly soiled & scraps of gray paper adhere to the verso where it has been removed from an album. Good. <p>Apparently in the process of preparing a concert program Kuhe writes to a Mr. Mayer: "I shall put down all three Hungarian songs for Mr. Plunkett Green in a good position with Mr. Baird's name as accompanist. Kindly let me have the words as well as those of Jess Macfarlane at your earliest convenience."<p>Born and trained in Prague Czech pianist William Kuhe 1823-1912 visited England for the first time at the age of 22. Two years later he returned there as accompanist to the great singer Jenny Lind. In 1871 he established the Brighton music festival aiming he wrote "to emulate the example of Mr. Manns at Sydenham and produce whenever the opportunity presented itself works by English composers". Signed "James Macdonell". Folded twice for mailing. Very good. <p>Macdonell writes to Thomas Wemyss Reid editor of the Leeds Mercury. He apologizes at length for not having answered a note from Reid which arrived while Macdonell was away in the Highlands. He goes on to describe his current busy life as a journalist mentioning "I am also gathering the material for a big book" probably his book on France. "But I have almost abandoned the hope of being able to write anything of that kind until I shall have freed myself from the shackles of my journalism."<p>Scottish journalist James Macdonell 1841-1879 began by writing for the Aberdeen Free Press in his native city and at the age of 22 became editor of the Northern Daily Express. He moved to London in 1865 to take up a staff position at the Daily Telegraph which he held until 1875 serving as special correspondent in France in 1870 and 1871. He became a leader writer on the Times of London in 1873. His posthumous "France since the First Empire" was incomplete at his death but yielded insights into the French politics of his time. Hemstreet is listed as the author of 'Encysted tumor of pelvic origin' included in this volume. Pages lightly stained & foxed throughout minor loss from spine base base of boards bumped. 408 pp. 8vo. A collection of medical papers by various authors significant for the inclusion of the short paper 'Amputation of the cervix uteri' by J. Marion Sims who later released a full-length volume entitled 'Clinical Notes on Uterine Surgery.' Garrison-Morton 6057. The paper includes illustrations of a duck-billed speculum and two figures illustrating a method for applying stitches to close the amputation wound. The editor of the work acknowledges the importance of the article and apologizes for its placement at the end of the volume stating "This paper was received at so late a day that it was impossible to give it its proper place in the volume the minutes being already in type.
