A little marginal browning and soiling consistent with use upper corners bumped lacks decorative paper over lower wrapper. This manuscript is a copy of Kojitsu kenpō 古實獻法 a work concerned with menu composition and the presentation of food for celebratory occasions tied to seasonal festivals including the New Year in January and the Girls’ Festival in March. The text is organised into seven sections comprising a total of one hundred items.<br><br>This copy was most likely produced in the late Edo period. A note on the final page states that the contents are secret and should not be transmitted to outsiders suggesting its use within a restricted or specialist context. <br><br>Several hand-drawn illustrations are included with the text showing in detail the arrangement and presentation of dishes and serving ware appropriate to these ceremonial occasions. . unknown

Photographer's identifying address label affixed to verso McCormick / 22 Winter St / Boston. <br /> <br /> Rare candid interior shot of a private cooking class the six women in the image all identified in pencil on photograph verso in a manuscript hand we should note one of them is referred to as George Mires maybe a typo for Georgia--none of the students are dressed in men's attire at any rate. The class is crowded around a table in a spacious high-ceilinged kitchen the instructor identified as the woman with the spoon pinned to her dress. The kitchen table is the portion of the photograph that is most poorly fixed though it appears the women are learning to bake--one woman uses a wooden spoon to mix batter in a bowl another pensively holds her rolling pin. . A community cookbook with one hundred eighty recipes the majority of them attributed. Arranged as a series of "bills of fare" for meals headed Breakfast Lunch Party Coffee High Tea Supper and one Hallow e'en Party. Some repetitions occur therefore both Fig Cake and Charlotte Russe for instance are deemed compatible with several menu lists. Examples of potential interest: Celery Salad with mustard dressing Potato Rolls Panned Oysters Fried Lobster Risoles Boiled Hominy French Oyster Pie Ice Cream Cocoanut Cake Pineapple Float Almond Ice Cream. Monroe is the seat of Monroe County on the shores of Lake Erie a stone's throw from Dearborn and Detroit to the north. How the young ladies knew one another is not revealed; what their introductory remarks do make clear is that the impetus for their gatherings was "the desire of having a good time together" and that for publishing a cookbook was to raise money for an excursion possibly "a trip to Europe". Categorically not a charitable cause then – at least not in the conventional sense. Several pages chipped dog-eared or stained. Stapled in rose paper wrappers with black titling; spine reinforced at an early date. Still not unnattractive. Good or better. Rare. OCLC locates four copies; in neither Cook Brown nor Cagle. Rare. <br/><br/>This is a well-known but uncommon work on country living covering all aspects of domestic economy in 19th century Campagne by a Member of the Society of Horticulture and Agronomy at Paris. Part 2 not present here covers gardening and fruit trees. The 1822 first edition in 2 vols. is rare. Vicaire cites editions in 1825 1836 1845 and 1852 but not what appears to be this edition. See Bitting GASTRONOMIC BIBLIOGRAPHY p.4. Pages 155 - 419 is "La Petite Cuisiniere de La Maison de Campagne" with recipes. Audot hardcover

The cookery book has an index the confectionary book has a table of contents. Condition is GOOD ; covers spotted and worn with small slits at the ends of the front joint and the front joint mostly detached fron spine holding at the rear. Endpapers have some tears and have tape repairs. Binding of the text remains quite solid however. Paper spine label worn and illegible. Text a bit toned with some very faint water stains but quite readable. Recipes for gruel flummery jugged hare moss cake ratafia acorn bread etc. RRGR Lea and Blanchard hardcover

Illustrated with engravings." There are several versions of thiis uncommon book all with the date 1854. This Lowenstein 606. Recipes include Boiled Pig's Head to one ofr Vanilla Ice cream which requires beating "the cream hard for half an hour". Originally this book was in damaged boards with a illustrated pastedown on orange paper green cloth spine with printed ads to the front and rear pastedowns. This copy has been rebound in dark green cloth and reproductions of the original pastedowns have been retained as pastedowns on the front and back covers. As well the original ads to the backs of the front and back covers have been retained and adhered to new endpapers. The interior pages are in very good condition with a small edge tear to the last page of the index. An attractive rebound copy; no Dj as issued. 1.1 JM HOQ 101/4. Hardcover. With the binder's ticket of Leighton Son & Hodge on rear paste-down. According to the English editor's Preface this scarce work is 'an adapted translation of one of the most popular treatises on French Cookery entitled 'La Cuisiniere de la Campagne et de la Ville ou Nouvelle Cuisine Economique Paris Audot 1846'. The success and stature of the French original is compared to that of Mrs. Rundell. It has been suggested that this is in fact a second edition of a work with a similar title published by Thomas Boys in 1825 Bitting p. 554; Oxford p. 157; Wellcome III 67; however this would contradict the Preface and there is no mention of such a kinship in Oxford who lists both volumes. AN UNUSUALLY BRIGHT CLEAN COPY OF A VERY SCARCE WORK ESPECIALLY IN THE ORIGINAL BINDING. Oxford p.177 recording the publisher as 'David Boyne'. Not recorded by Cagle. The covers have paper stuck to them as with so many cookbooks of the period. The publishers evidently did not realize that over time their "kitchen proof" coating would stick to anything the book was left against. While the binding has it's problems the actual content the text block is actually very good. A useable book it just doesn't look so great. Well it was printed cheaply and it 130 years old. RARE Despite the opening words of the title the whole book is devoted to an account of the business endeavours of Whiteley. Inspired by an early visit to Crystal Palace he was determined to create a shop where absolutely everything could be purchased and thus eventually was born London's first department store - "Whiteley's" of Bayswater. The book is a detailed account of the model farms created at Hanworth to provide jams potted meats pickles etc for the shop. It is an unsurpassed social and commercial record.
